The bullying continued to escalate until a sympathetic gym coach trained Eddie to fight back. The teacher taught him that the "key to fighting is patience." Eddie also found it difficult to make friends. In late 2013, Eddie was transferred to Central City to join the Chicago Police Department. On December 11th, the night of the particle accelerator's opening, Eddie was supposed to meet dancer Katie Rogers at Mama Chow's Fine Dining for dinner, which he was excited about. However, Katie canceled at the last minute due to an injury, so Eddie ate dinner alone. After dinner, he stopped a thief from stealing Iris West's laptop and brought the perpetrator to the CCPD. After some time, he began secretly dating Iris. Eddie happily greeted forensic scientist Barry Allen before he and Joe went to investigate a bank robbery. Some time later, Eddie came to visit Iris, thinking Joe had left. Eddie claimed he was looking for Joe, and offered to return to the crime scene to take another look, "always working the case" as Joe had proudly taught him. While Joe waited in the car, Eddie pretended to go to the bathroom and kissed Iris, annoyed that keeping things secret (Iris's idea) could ruin their relationship. After their meeting, Eddie met Iris at the police station, saying that they needed to talk. At first, Eddie thought that Iris was breaking up with him, but Iris explained that she was just afraid of losing her first serious boyfriend. Before Eddie could leave, still convinced that Iris was breaking up with him, Iris pulled him close and kissed him in front of everyone. After Joe was hospitalized, Eddie and Iris finally decided to come clean about their relationship. Joe admitted that he had figured it out thanks to his detective skills and already knew, promising to try his best not to shoot Eddie. After Iris spent the night with him at his apartment, Eddie was in disbelief when Iris brought up the Flash. But after, he began noticing all the strange happenings in Central City and decided that the Flash was responsible, and asked Singh to organize a task force to capture the Flash, although Singh did not believe him and Iris was angry at him for hating the Flash. Later, when Eddie and Iris were returning to his apartment, they began to argue about the Flash, and Iris admitted that she had dated the Flash several times, which angered Eddie. After seeing Iris's Christmas gift from Barry - Iris's mother's engagement ring - Eddie suspected that Barry had feelings for Iris, although Iris denied it. Eddie himself gave Iris a gift - a key to his apartment so that she could move in with him, and Iris agreed. Joe admitted to the existence of metahumans (like the Flash and other people with abilities) and told Eddie that it needed to be kept a secret. After Eddie learned of the existence of metahumans and that the Flash had saved his life on multiple occasions, he began to view the Flash as a hero rather than a vigilante. Barry admitted to Eddie that he is the Flash. Although Flash's help in apprehending criminals makes his job easier, Eddie struggles to keep Barry's secret and believes that Iris deserves to know, but Joe tells him to keep it a secret from Iris. This strained their relationship, as Iris believed that Eddie should not hide anything. While having dinner at a restaurant with Iris, Barry, Ray Palmer, and Felicity, Iris scolded Eddie for keeping a secret and briefly stopped living with him. Barry and Eddie tracked down Hannibal Bates, a metahuman who could transform into anyone upon contact. Hannibal framed Eddie by impersonating him and shooting two police officers. Eddie was freed from prison thanks to Barry's super speed, who saw his situation as similar to Henry's, but Eddie convinced Barry to send him back to prison. Luckily, the Flash defeated Bates, and video evidence proved Eddie's innocence to prosecutor Cecile Horton. Eddie revealed to Iris that his secret was that he was working with the Flash, and the two began to repair their relationship. While the team was formulating a plan to catch the Reverse-Flash, Eddie planned to propose to Iris. He asked Joe for his blessing, but Joe refused. He later arrived at the bridge with his girlfriend. But just as he was about to propose to Iris, the Reverse-Flash knocked him unconscious. Before the Reverse-Flash could kill Iris, the Flash appeared and the Reverse-Flash kidnapped Eddie. Eddie learned that the Reverse-Flash was actually his descendant, Eobard Thawne. While incarcerated, Eddie was certain that Eobard would be no match for Team Flash. Eobard later revealed Eddie's fate in the future: Eddie would become the most forgotten member of the Thawne family due to a seemingly uneventful life as a police detective. Eddie was also devastated when Eobard revealed that Iris would marry Barry in the future instead of him. The team found Eddie and managed to free him. Despite Iris's reluctance to accept the future, Eddie decided to break up with Iris, knowing that his love had always loved Barry.
