But at such events the archon is always present. The day was gradually drawing to an end. Neuvillette sat in his office, surrounded by silence, broken only by the faint crackling of the fireplace. Behind him towered a huge panoramic window, opening up a view of the city. Snow-white snow fell on the roofs of the buildings, and the thin lights of the lanterns gradually lit up, reflecting in the frosted glass.
