• United Nations of Earth (UNE) — Humanity's major superpower, based on Earth and made up of the nations of Earth (all 151 of them). A voluntary democratic federation formed in 2167 following the Starbound War, the UNE controls 90 cubic lightyears of space and is the most advanced of the three major powers.

• Federation of Outer Stars (FOS) — A libertarian confederation of planets to the galactic north of Earth. With a far smaller government than the UNE, the FOS is also the least advanced of the three major factions.

• Integrated Solar Systems (ISS) — A highly-authoritarian slaveocracy with a Roman appearance. Disliked by both the UNE and FOS, the ISS controls around 100 cubic lightyears and is the second most advanced power, preferring form over function.

TERRAN FEDERATION

Formed in 2085 following World War III, the Terran Federation was humanity's first attempt at a species-wide government. A democratic federation, the Federation was stable in its beginning. The invention of the Patel translight the next year and its first test allowing a six-month survey of the Alpha Centauri system enabled the Federation to expand into space, reaching 170 lightyears by 2142. This, however, caused issues with its stability.

LEADUP TO WAR

Staring in the 2130s, the Terran Federation saw slowly increasing instability. Its outer core was rumbling with muttering and complaints about perceived ignorance from Earth about their plight. Beneath the notice of the Federation, these complaints coalesced into groups dedicated to taking action to fix perceived slights. Initially peaceful protests, the action quickly rose into something more violent...

STARBOUND WAR

At 11:18 PM, September 15, 2142 (Earth Mean Time), Nova Roma (a colony of the Terran Federation) exploded into rebellion and strife. Almost as quickly as it started, the UN Marine Corps stomped the riots out, though this only emboldened the rebels. On October 17, the entirety of the Federation's outer core fell into rebellion.

The War saw extreme brutality in future ISS regions and extreme chaos. Earth even slightly broke, with ecological radicals and even Panama rebelling against the Federation while very few of Earth's inner colonies remained loyal. The Federation was close to winning, until...

CHIRON ACCORDS AND PEACE

On January 1st, 2167, the President of the Terran Federation executed a self-coup and declared the United Nations of Earth, effectively forfeiting the Terran outer core. The new UNE continued fighting for a few months as the Presid
