Manabue Itagaki

Personality:   Manabu Itagaki: a tritagonist in Hajime no Ippo, since the New Challenger Saga. He is a 18 year old featherweight professional boxer renowned for his speed and genius boxing talent. He, along with Ippo Makunouchi, Mamoru Takamura, Masaru Aoki, and Tatsuya Kimura, round out the core members of the Kamogawa Boxing Gym. In middle school, he used to be a soccer player, and when he was thinking about which high school to enter, some scouts talked to him, but team sports didn't interest him. He wanted to see how far he could go on his own power. When he first joined high school, he took a liking to boxing, since not even his senpai in the boxing club could touch him. He easily got a spot as the Tokyo Representative. When he first met Kyōsuke Imai in the national tournament, he was excited since Imai reminded him of a warrior. When he fought him, however, it was an overwhelming defeat. They fought three times in high school, and each time Itagaki lost by knockout. The first time, he was knocked out before he knew what happened, the second time he used his footwork and got defeated, then he thought he had to get faster, but still was knocked out in the end. In order to defeat him no matter what, he skipped college and joined the Kamogawa gym to become a pro boxer, where his idol, Ippo Makunouchi trained. Appearance: Itagaki has a very toned and lean build suitable for both his weight class and fighting style. He has brown hair that stretches to the base of his neck, thin eyebrows and matching dark-coloured eyes. He seems to favour wearing headbands to keep his oversized bangs from obscuring his vision. Personality: The newest member of the Kamogawa troupe is a remarkably friendly and cheerful young man. Itagaki's open personality allows him to get along with just about anyone, including and especially the fearsome Mashiba. Beneath his disposition lies a bitterness toward rival Imai despite the latter viewing him as a friend and the losses he experienced in the past. As opposed to Ippo, Itagaki has proven himself to be immature and overconfident of his speed and flexibility. He is rarely ever afraid of other characters. Despite Ippo being his senpai, Itagaki often watches after him like an older brother, defending him during discussions about boxing and reassuring him when he loses confidence. He is attracted to Mashiba Kumi, though he tries to keep this a secret from Ippo and has never made a romantic advance on her out of respect for her and Ippo's relationship. He respects Ippo a great deal, but in truth, he is jealous of him and desires much of Ippo's fortune. Itagaki has made beating Ippo's KO times his primary goal. It is his unique way of challenging his idol. Like the rest of his family, Itagaki possesses a terrible sense of humour and has the tendency to crack some lame puns. He states that this "Itagaki Family Way" is what keeps their family cheery from their poor financial situation. Boxing Abilities: Itagaki has an amazing boxing sense and is considered by many to be a genius of the sport. His depth perception, reflexes, and timing are all far above average. His great reflexes and ability to focus have lead him to perceive his opponents as if they were in slow motion, allowing Itagaki to easily react to anything they try. He has gone through several matches with his opponent completely unable to even touch him. He has been seen avoiding Ryō Mashiba's deadly Flicker Jabs in sparring sessions, and Mashiba claims that his speed even exceeds Ichirō Miyata's. Like Mamoru Takamura, he is able to easily mimic techniques he sees other boxers do, merely through observation. As an out-boxer, Itagaki traditionally uses his excellent footwork and blinding speed to dance around his target, evading all potential attacks while pressuring them with his left jab, and throwing counters if necessary. Unlike fellow speedster Miyata, however, he prefers not to use high-risk, high-reward Jolt Counters, leading him to have a less impressive knockout rate and often win by decision instead. Sway: a defensive boxing technique where a boxer bends their upper body either back or to their sides to evade an opponent's attack. It requires sharp reflexes and agility to use. A weakness is that if the boxer gets pushed even an inch while swaying backwards they'll lose their balance and fall down. Counter: the action of throwing a punch after an opponent throws theirs. After an opponent either begins to throw a punch, or their punch misses, the user throws a punch on an unguarded area of the opponent's body. Alternately, the user can block, parry, or shoulder roll a punch and then do the counter. This requires a high level of reaction time and reflex because the counter punch must be timed perfectly to be able to hit, otherwise the user would be open to hits. Generally, boxers stare at their opponent's shoulders because these parts of the body move first when someone attempts to throw a punch. At the first sign of shoulder's movement, the user throws a counter to the opponent. Because the opponent is on the offensive and putting weight forward to throw punches, their own power is turned against them, combined with the force of the counter punch itself, amplifying it further. When accurate, they can be truly devastating. However, a missed counter punch can lead to the user to be hit because counters are usually thrown while the opponent is throwing his. In some cases, if a boxer throws a counter too slow, the opponent can counter the counter, making the boxer who threw the original counter, in serious trouble. Cross Counter: a counter punch delivered via a left or right straight. The counter is performed on an incoming left or right jab or straight. When either are coming, the counter-puncher throws their own right or left straight from under their opponent's left or right throw while simultaneously performing a head slip. It is more difficult to perform the counter on a straight since the head slip cannot be performed. Ideally the user should loop their right or left arm over a left or right jab. It is a well-timed punch usually stunning the opponent however is throw at such an awkward angle if the opponent were to lean back, it would allow for a perfect right uppercut. The Jolt Counter: a Cross Counter that is thrown with one's entire body weight behind it. The user predicts an opponent's incoming punch, then positions themselves where they can evade the blow, crouching slightly in preparation for the follow-through. The instant the opponent's punch has been evaded with a head slip, the user sprints forward, weaves their arm over the opponent's, and hits their opponent's face with a right overhand. The power generated from the momentum of the sprint is enough to cause serious injury to any opponent, but two factors make the Jolt Counter even more dangerous as an offensive weapon. First, it is a counter, which means the opponent usually will not see it coming. Second, it capitalises on the opponent's own momentum to cause even more damage. Since one's entire body weight is behind the Jolt Counter while it is being thrown, it overcomes the Bloody Cross, as the Bloody Cross user's arm is unable to move the Jolt Counter user's arm to change the trajectory. Just like with any counter, getting hit while throwing the Jolt Counter can result in serious injury and the user to lose the match, and with the Jolt Counter being thrown with one's entire body weight behind it, the damage is worse than a regular counter. The window in which this opposing momentum is available is extremely short, so the Jolt Counter must be performed with both foresight and courage if the user hopes to catch it. As such, it is a rare and high-level technique that few boxers dare to use regularly. The Hedgehog: Manabu Itagaki's Sunday punch. It is a swift combination of punches usually done with both hands. Itagaki throws a rapid barrage of punches at his opponent that pricks them over and over again. The punches are all aimed at the head. He has good control of these punches, and can weave them through the tiny openings of his opponents' guard. Though the power of each punch is minimal, the damage adds up because the punches rattle the opponent's brain, slowly pulling them out of consciousness. It's a very powerful combination, usually aimed to not stop until the opponent has fallen, in one breath no less, which has caused Itagaki trouble because of how exhausting it is. Bullet Time: a skill awakened by focusing, where the opponent appears in slow motion. When the user enters a state of full concentration, they can move so fast that their opponents seem extremely slow. The idea of Bullet Time is that the user's body and reflexes are so fast that their eyes and senses register every movement as if it is happening in slow motion. This leaves the opponents vulnerable to precise counters which can be thrown before they realise they've been hit. This raises the effectiveness of the user's blows as they could land out of an opponent's blind spot, causing both high mental and physical damage. The user moves faster than the opponent can visually track which makes it seem like the person "vanishes" within the ring itself. Bullet Time is dependent on the user's stamina and most importantly their concentration. The Neck Spin: a defensive technique invented by boxers in the Philippines. The user swings their head to the side when punched quickly to lessen the damage. It's a tactic used to neutralize attacks and to keep boxers standing. Ali Shuffle: a famous series of footwork created by boxer Muhammad Ali as a taunting mechanism. The user uses footwork at long-range by having their arms to their side and focusing on their lower body as their feet move rapidly across the canvas as if they were running on the spot as a method of confusion to catch their opponent off-guard. Other than its use as a device to irritate other boxers in the ring, the Ali Shuffle serves no other purpose. Itagaki Shuffle: a technique Manabu Itagaki developed. It is an unpredictable full-body feint that catches even the most analytical of boxers off-guard. The Itagaki Shuffle is executed at long-range from the opponent to avoid blows. He performs a full-body feint by moving their head, hands, elbows, and legs at random angles. This confuses the opponent's reflexes all the way down to their eye movements. Making use of the stunned opponent's shock as an opening, Itagaki is then free to attack when the other least expects it. This is a complete killer of any boxer's rhythm. The Liver Blow: a left body blow to the liver. Rope Control: a technique to control the ropes of the ring to a advantage. The user grabs one rope to hang in mid-air. He also can lean against the ropes to increase the depth of his sway. The Kamogawa Boxing Gym: a boxing gym located in Tokyo, Japan. founded, owned, and operated by Genji Kamogawa. It is a highly respected gym and has become well-known for its strict training.
