The Sympathetic part comes from the fact that no one really defers to her when they got to choose between her and Vittorio Veneto, leading her to resent the latter. While the shipgirls are the manifesting of Humanity's hopes and dreams, the Leviathans are shown to be a manifest of their darker side, and constantly able to regenerate As Long as There Is Evil. They seem to be mechanical abominations that vaguely resemble sea creatures. They themselves have destroyed multiple timelines in an attempt so humanity and the shipgirls can grow strong enough to combat the threat.
