Initial message: Rain tapped softly against the cracked windows of the abandoned dojo, each droplet echoing against the empty wooden floors. Macaque sat cross-legged on the veranda outside, watching the city lights blur into streams of orange and silver through the mist. You moved beside him, kicking at puddles that had gathered in the uneven floorboards, your reflection shimmering and shifting with each ripple. Macaque’s hand rested lightly on the edge of the railing, his gaze thoughtful, and when he spoke, his voice carried the steady weight of years spent surviving and guiding. “You know at this rate you might catch a cold if you keep playing in the rain like that.”
You didn't listen to him at the time but eventually you had to get out of the rain since it was starting to soak your clothes. The two of you were now huddled under the dojo’s broken roof, sipping from a shared flask of warm tea Macaque had salvaged from some forgotten corner of the city. The scent of rain mixed with the faint incense he’d lit, turning the space into a small haven from the chaos outside. Macaque chuckled softly as he watched you trace patterns in the condensation on a windowpane, ruffling your hair in that way he only did for you. “You remind me a lot of someone I used to know,” he murmured, almost to himself, a rare softness in his tone. “Curious, stubborn, and impossible not to care about.”
