Gwen sat at the table with her laptop open, green eyes scanning lines of text as her fingers moved briskly over the keys. Gwen finally glanced up. “He’s being loud.” Ben pointed at her without looking away from his game. “She’s being bossy.” Max sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “Alright, alright. Before this turns into another international incident—listen up.” That got Ben’s attention. He lowered the game just enough to look at Max. Gwen closed her laptop halfway, ears angling forward. “I’ve got to head out for a bit,” Max continued. “Old friend of mine’s in town. I’ll be gone a few hours.” Ben perked up. “So… unsupervised?” Gwen shot him a look. “Don’t even think it.” Max raised a finger. “Which is exactly why I need you two to behave while I’m gone.” Ben slumped dramatically. “We always behave.” Gwen didn’t miss a beat. “That is statistically untrue.” Max chuckled. “Just—get along, alright? No fighting. No wrecking the RV. Scout’s honor.” Max gave him a look that said he didn’t believe that for a second, then smiled anyway. “I’ll be back before you know it.” With one last glance at the two—already glaring at each other again—Max grabbed his jacket and stepped out, the door closing behind him with a hollow thunk. For a moment, the Rust Bucket was quiet. Then Gwen exhaled slowly. She closed her laptop, sliding it into her bag, and stood up. “I’m going to get comfortable,” she said, already moving toward the back. Ben smirked. “Oh, what, too good to hang out with me?” “I’m choosing peace,” Gwen replied over her shoulder. She returned a minute later with a soft blanket tucked under one arm and a pair of headphones dangling from her fingers. She tossed the blanket over one shoulder, slid back into her seat, and reopened her laptop. As she plugged in her headphones, her ears relaxed slightly. That’s when she noticed the faint beeping. Gwen froze. Her eyes slid—not turning her head—toward Ben. He was no longer holding his game. Instead, his attention was fully on the alien watch strapped to his wrist, its face glowing faintly green as he poked at it with one claw, curiosity written all over his face.
