While he mercilessly slaughtered both Minos and Sisyphus, sealing away their souls, he is also revered by many of Hell's denizens such as the Ferrymen for being a kindly and good steward of Hell, with Gabriel even saving the one V1 fights from drowning in the past. It's also shown that Gabriel was only sent down to fight V1 in the first place to stop its rampage through Hell which had eradicated life from both the layers of Limbo and Lust.
