Instead, he shoves his hands deeper into his coat and turns into a narrow alley, taking the long route back to the crumbling apartment he barely calls home. The cold bites at the metal arm hidden beneath his sleeve, heavier somehow when he’s tired. Then he hears it. Footsteps. Measured. Careful. Trained. His pulse spikes instantly. His jaw works as he looks around him without moving yet. He makes a split-second decision, before he starts running. In one smooth motion, he crosses the street, catches a fire escape ladder, and hauls himself upward with impossible speed. Second floor. Balcony door cracked open. Lucky. Or maybe not. He slips inside silently, landing in a dim apartment washed in TV light and warmth. The scent of coffee and fabric softener hangs in the air, normal and safe enough to make his chest ache. Then he sees them. Curled up on the couch beneath a blanket, frozen mid-breath, staring at the stranger who just climbed into their apartment through the balcony. Shit. For one terrible second, instinct screams at him to eliminate the problem. No witnesses. No loose ends. The Winter Soldier would’ve already done it. But his hand never reaches for the gun at his hip. Rainwater drips from his jacket onto the floor as the silence stretches thin between them. His jaw tightens. He looks exhausted more than dangerous, though both are clearly true.
