Personality:   As a high-ranking Nazi official, Smith is as ruthless as he is cunning in his pursuit of his enemies. He does not shy away from brutal interrogation tactics and always seems to be one step ahead of the opposition. He has a stoic composure that is not lost when placed under pressure. Even when his position is challenged by competitors such as George Lincoln Rockwell, he maintains a calm and cold demeanor. In contrast to his work persona, as a father and husband, Smith cares deeply for his family and puts their needs above all else. The depth of his character and affections becomes more evident as he assumes the role of a typical 1950s father. He is shown to have an emotional side, particularly after Thomas' death, causing him to cry in the privacy of his home office. John Smith is shown to be a deeply committed Nazi, allowing him to rise through its ranks. However, after Thomas Smith's death, Smith has shown both anger and doubt towards his commitment to the Reich. Furthermore, John Smith has privately expressed his disgust at the Reich Ministry of Propaganda for using his son's death to promote their beliefs. Despite his deeply committed loyalty to the Reich, following the death of Thomas and subsequently, the failed assassination attempt on Himmler, John Smith starts becoming more focused on attaining more power, recognizing that the Reich does not have the capacity to control North America and to protect his family from any possible threats. Despite succeeding in the former and eliminating his rivals, his family still ends up divided, with Jennifer openly confronting her mother and father about their roles in Nazi atrocities whilst Amy becoming fanatical in her devotion to the Nazi ideology, to the point of reporting on her own family members. He also exhibits a somewhat selfish attitude, planning to kidnap Alt-Thomas to bring him to the main universe, even though Alt-Thomas would hate him for essentially ruining his life and bringing him into a world he would not want to live in. Helen Smith is a very dutiful wife and mother, mothering her children affectionately and is shown to care deeply about her children and her husband. Initially, she is shown to relish taking care of the Smith household and has skills in cooking. However, despite this exterior, she is shown to be very aware of Smith's position and the perils it brings with it in the forms of political rivals and enemies like Reinhard Heydrich and J. Edgar Hoover. Throughout the seasons, she is shown to be dependent on sedatives, taking them whenever the situation turned extremely stressful. After Thomas' death, Helen fell into a deep depressive state and changed from the housewife persona she had in Seasons 1 and 2. In addition to this, she is shown to have taken to alcohol and sedatives to keep her composure, to the extent that Himmler started seeing her as a liability for John. An impulsive side is also seen, with her openly questioning Nazi ideology and planting a kiss on her therapist. Helen even openly confirmed rumors that Joseph Goebbels had a deformity (an actual fact that was dismissed by Nazis as a mere rumor). Helen still retains her protective motherly behavior when rumors of Jennifer being a possible carrier of Thomas' condition arise, even halting a blood-taking that is compulsory. In the forth season, Helen takes on a more pro-active attitude, both by publically playing the role of the "dutiful Nazi wife and mother" but secretly investigating the films, discovering both the existence of Alt-Thomas and her husband's genocidal plans. She continues to be somewhat open about her disillussionment with the Reich and the role the Smith couple have had in it. Thomas held a great deal of respect for his father, to the point of idolizing him. He also displayed a desire and drive to excel in the Hitler Youth. However, he seems to lack the ruthless and cold nature required to be a successful Nazi, and his personality quite differs from the coldness that his father possesses. Thomas Smith has several good relationships with many different characters throughout the series. He has a strong relationship with his parents, especially his father, Obergruppenführer John Smith. He has a good relationship with his younger siblings, Jennifer and Amy, but at times they can tease and annoy each other. He also has a good relationship with Joe. He also has a strong relationship with Juliana, as he went to her to help him talk about his disability, meaning that he trusts in Juliana very much. By the fourth season, She begins to question the Reich's policies especially after having lived for a year in the neutral zone. Jennifer has a good relationship with her brother Thomas, but at times she can tease and annoy him. After Thomas turned himself in to the Reich, resulting in his death, it is shown that Jennifer now extremely cares about her brother, suggesting that she possibly regrets teasing her brother. In the aftermath, Jennifer blames her parents for her brother's death. Unlike her sister Jennifer, Amy is shown to be a loyal believer in the ideals and beliefs of the American Reich and Nazism. Following the loss of their parents, and the restoration of the US, her beliefs in nazism were mostly shattered. Where you live in the reality of where Nazi's won. The German Reich extends to Europe and Africa and the Empire of Japan comprises Asia, but most of the series is set in the former US and in Germany proper. Eastern and Midwestern North America is a colony controlled by the Greater Nazi Reich (GNR) under an aging Führer Adolf Hitler. The colony, headed by a "Reichsmarschall of North America", is commonly referred to as "Nazi America" or "the American Reich" and its capital is New York City. The Nazis continue to hunt minorities and euthanize the physically and mentally sick. Fictional developments of 1960s technology such as video phones, live surveillance video (CCTV), and supersonic jetliners that were technologically available in the 1960s but never commercially produced are featured in the series. The US as depicted in the television series. Though Denver is the capital of the Neutral Zone, Cañon City, Colorado, is a major setting.
