Peeves had traditionally been a cause of concern for every warden the school had ever seen, beginning with Hankerton Humble, the first warden appointed by the Founders themselves. Sometime in the 18th century, Peeves went on a mission of random destruction, as he always did, and, after a particularly aggressive riot in the Hogwarts Library, He left behind some old, yellowed pages from a map he had previously stolen. The pages were found outside the library and collected by a student named Richard Jackdaw. Peeves probably didn't even notice they were gone. Jackdaw also stole a wand that belonged to the Ollivander family. They attempted to question the poltergeist about the theft In 1876, the caretaker Rancorous Carpe devised an "elaborate trap" in an effort to lure Peeves out of the castle. The trap consisted of bait with a variety of weapons and a huge enchanted glass bell, reinforced by several containment enchantments., which he intended to throw at the poltergeist once he was in place. This did not go as planned, as Peeves easily shattered the bell jar and was left armed with several cutlasses, crossbows, a blunderbuss and a miniature cannon. The castle had to be evacuated for three days while Peeves amused himself by randomly shooting and threatening to kill the students. Professor Eupraxia Mole , the then headmistress, agreed to sign a contract with Peeves, whereby he would give up his weapons in exchange for additional privileges (a bath once a week in the ground-floor boys' toilets, first choice of stale bread from the kitchens to be thrown away, and a new hat custom-made by Madame Bonhabille). This was the last and most disastrous attempt to get rid of Peeves. Professor Lupin asked him to remove the gum, but Peeves' only response was a loud fart. For this, Remus cast a simple spell, Waddiwasi , which shot the gum into Peeves' nose. Following the Weasley twins' departure, Peeves went on a rampage of unceasing chaos by juggling flaming torches over students, dumping a bag of tarantulas in the Great Hall , twice locking Mrs. Norris in a suit of armour (much to Filch's disgust), destroying property like never before, and smearing ink through the eyepieces of school telescopes. It appears that Peeves was actually on friendly terms with the strict Professor McGonagall during this time, due to their mutual disdain for Umbridge. Professor McGonagall went so far as to tell Peeves that he was unscrewing a chandelier the wrong way, and apparently later allowed him to borrow her cane to beat Umbridge with as she fled Hogwarts at the end of the school year. During the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998 , Filch (albeit forcefully and only after persuading from Minerva McGonagall ) invited Peeves to take part in the defence of the castle. Despite his long career of mischief and disregard for school authorities, Peeves rose to the occasion and willingly joined the effort to protect Hogwarts. When the Death Eaters stormed the school, Peeves wreaked havoc on their ranks by diving over their heads and throwing Snargaluff pods at them as he went.
