The soil is orange and brown and displays a triangular pattern. Palm trees with pink berries adorn the region, as well as star-shaped green plants that seem to litter the tropical coast. Sometimes, tree trunks with holes in them also appear on the highest mountain tops. Past In the Past, Palmtree Panic takes on more of a prehistoric theme, with small purple mountains, a turquoise sky, and fields covered in a lighter shade of grass than in the present. The soil retains the present version's triangular pattern, although it is now peach and brown-colored. Some palm trees have a light bulb-like feature on the top. The star-shaped plants are replaced with vine-like plants sprouting from the ground. Also, the tree trunks from the present now feature some small branches with leaves on them. FutureBad In the Bad Future, Palmtree Panic has become completely mechanized and polluted. It is full of dark-gray tubes that have filthy lavender water running through them, some of which dump it into a gray river full of oil. The mountains are eroded and appear darker, lack the waterfalls they once had, and have small factories and machines on them instead. The sky is also pink with light pink clouds. The soil still features its triangular pattern, but it is now purple and dark gray, and is covered in dead orange grass. The palm trees are mechanical, with damaged gray trunks with machinery in them; the leaves are now a rusty orange color with a lavender liquid dripping from them, and have an ominous, glowing red light in the center. The star-shaped plants are orange as well, and are also drenched in the same liquid the palm trees have on them. The aforementioned tree trunks are dark gray as well and are even more damaged than before. Good In the Good Future, Palmtree Panic is a bright, vivid, colorful, and clean tropical paradise. It has a turquoise sky, large mountains with vegetation and waterfalls on them, and a clean lake in the background. The soil features the same triangular pattern, though it is now brighter, and the fields are covered in lime grass. The palm trees are mechanized, like in the Bad Future, but they now work as water transporters -- perhaps even as water purifiers. Some of them are connected to each other via golden pipes which lead water through the area, and some of these pipes even cycle clean water into the lake. The star-shaped plants are as well shinier than before, with water dripping from them. The tree trunks still remain in this timeline, but like in the Bad Future, they are more damaged than in the Present. Story Having invaded Little Planet, which includes Palmtree Panic, Dr. Eggman would install robot teleporters in the past and infest the region with Badniks. He would also put up some Metal Sonic holograms to terrorize the Animals that live there. Using these elements, Eggman managed to conquer the future of the planet and rewrite history in his own image. Due to the doctor's influence however, Palmtree Panic would end up being a victim of Eggman's constant pollution on Little Planet. With lots of factories nearby surrounding it, water polluted by oil and chemicals, and mechanical plants, the region would be devastated in the future. A while later, Palmtree Panic becomes the first location Sonic the Hedgehog visits during his adventure on Little Planet, during which he manages to re-write Palmtree Panic's history and revert Eggman's effects in the region. Along the way, he meets Amy Rose for the first time, who falls in love with him instantly and tries to hug him. Not taking an interest in Amy's affection, Sonic continues onward. He also comes under attack by Eggman in the EGG-HVC-001, but he manages to defeat Eggman, forcing him to retreat, before continuing onward to Collision Chaos. Gameplay Palmtree Panic is a rather speedy level, taking numerous cues from Green Hill Zone from the original Sonic the Hedgehog, while also adding some new features. One of its most iconic level set pieces is a giant loop present at the start of the present of Zone 1, in which the playable character runs through in a pseudo-3d perspective before being launched into the actual level. Tunnels also return, but now feature many different formations that snake around and even loop in on themselves. There is one instance in Zone 1 where there is a gimmick that sends the player zooming through an unseen tunnel inside the foreground, before bursting out of a wall and leaving behind a hole in the shape of the playable character. In terms of level design, Palmtree Panic is relatively fast and straightforward, though it often features multiple routes. The Round features very tall hills of varying height that Sonic can climb up from the main path, often using small hidden platforms to ascend, and are occasionally connected via crumbling platforms. The Road also features Spring Poles, as well as spinning turntables that rotate the player around when stood on, with an increased quantity of them when on the past or either of the futures. Set pieces of note are the hidden platforms that are not only present in the exact same spots across all time zones, but also feature different properties depending on the time as well. Arguably the most iconic "obstacle" present in the level however is Amy Rose, who appears at the very end of Zone 1 and will follow Sonic around, trying to latch onto him. If she manages to catch Sonic, the player will be unable to move, though they can jump to escape. In the Present, Collision Chaos is a pink mechanized forest full of strange white-blue machines. The place is dotted with blue pillars of all shapes and sizes, as well as identically-colored pipes running through the foreground. Neon signs line up across Collision Chaos, which display flickering, gibberish texts. It takes place during late sunset, with odd orange dots possibly representing an autumn forest sitting at the foot of a pink lake. Though the lake is shown at the very bottom of the Zone, it also curiously appears upside down at the very top as well. Past Much like Palmtree Panic, Collision Chaos' Past takes place in a seemingly prehistoric time period, but with many of the Present's elements still under construction; thus, many of its gimmicks are either absent or have been replaced with grassy platforms. A few blue girders can be seen sticking out of the level, which is now sporting a golden color scheme, and Instead of machines, there are yellow prehistoric-esque plants with oddly shaped leaves and patterns. No neon signs can be found here; instead, airborne rocky structures replace them, which the player can stand on. Taking place during early sunset, a much more recognizable forest sits near the lake, which is reflecting the orange sky above. FutureBad In the Bad Future, Collision Chaos features a darkened sky at dusk adorned with red clouds, and the machines have turned gray from neglect. There seem to be no plants present here aside from the dead orange grass, and the signs are still illegible but fully functional. The lake here looks to be teeming with some kind of toxic waste, as evidenced by its reddish-orange tint. The background now features a giant mountain covered in, presumably, more dead grass and plants, with several green-colored factories and pipes in front. Good In the Good Future, Collision Chaos is a tranquil, turquoise colored region, which is now set during midday. The plants adorning the Zone are futuristic and natural, adding pleasing attractions to the location, while the waters below are crisp and clean. The mountains from the Bad Future are also present, but are now fully covered in plant life. Several blue-colored futuristic buildings can be seen among the pillars of rock. Story Having invaded Little Planet, which includes Collision Chaos, Dr. Eggman would install robot teleporters in the past and infest the region with Badniks. He would also put up some Metal Sonic holograms to terrorize the Animals that live there. Using these elements, Eggman managed to conquer the future of the planet and rewrite history in his own image. However, the impact of his operations turned Collision Chaos into a haunted and abandoned region. After Sonic the Hedgehog arrives in Collision Chaos, he comes across Amy Rose who begins following him around. However, she is soon kidnapped by a robotic version of Sonic. Now having to worry about rescuing Amy while battling Eggman, Sonic starts re-writing Collision Chaos's history, thereby reverting the doctor's effects in the region, and reverting the region into a futuristic city. Some time later, Sonic finds Dr. Eggman in a machine in a pinball-like area, ready to fight him. After defeating Eggman and making him retreat, Sonic continues onward to Tidal Tempest. Gameplay Collision Chaos features a heavy emphasis on gimmicks that bounce the player around. Rows of spheres are placed in tall corridors of the Round, with Flippers usually placed at the very bottom to launch Sonic into them. A recurring element of the Zones are slotting Springs that pop out of the ground when Sonic runs past them, and horizontal ones are typically placed right next to sloped ramps in order to launch the player high into the air. Some spikes also slot out of the ground too though, which the player must take into account when backtracking. Bumpers are all over the place in both Zones, bouncing the player every which way, whether helpful or not. Most are the typical round variant, but new long and skinny variants are placed either at the foot of or a small distance above the ground, and sometimes even vertically, in the walls. Fatter versions also move up and down in the air, acting as bouncing platforms for the player. Usually in the lower sections of the rounds are corridors containing rotating spike chains (or more of the aforementioned slotting spikes) with small gaps placed in the ground with springs below, sending the player into danger if they do not move quickly. Lastly, Zone 2 features a unique set piece at the very top of the Zone in the form of a large, rotating cylinder with many smaller platforms attached that rotate along with it. These platforms can be stood on, but only when they are properly facing outwards, on the same plane of view as the player. They also rotate, though only in the future. In the present, Tidal Tempest is an underwater region inside a ancient temple system. It rests on the base of many volcanoes and rocky structures. There are as well several yellow pipes that carry water from one area to another, with stone pillars adorning certain parts of the Round. The water elevation is as well normal in the present, giving the water a greenish tint when entered. Past In the past, Tidal Tempest is a dark, underground cavern with little machinery. It features green pipes all over the caves. In addition, stone pillars take a different shape here and the water level is fairly low, giving the caverns a darkened tint when stepped into. FutureBad In the bad future, Tidal Tempest is an over-industrialized, non-functional and corroded water plant. Broken-down machines and stone pillars depicting Dr. Eggman's face are featured here. Some brown pipes also carry water, which now looks unsafe, with a pinkish-reddish tint that makes it resemble Mega Mack. The water level is at its highest point in this timeline. Good In the good future, Tidal Tempest is a fully operational, turquoise and magenta aquarium that harbors much plant life in hydroponic cases. Many fish Animals swim freely through the water, which features a pleasant light-turquoise tint when entered. The water here is carried through pink pipes. Just like the bad future, the water level is at its highest point in this timeline. Story Having invaded Little Planet, which includes Tidal Tempest, Dr. Eggman would install robot teleporters in the past and infest the region with Badniks. He would also put up some Metal Sonic holograms to terrorize the Animals that live there. Using these elements, Eggman managed to conquer the future of the planet and rewrite history in his own image. As such, Tidal Tempest would be transformed into a broken down, non-functional and polluted water plant in the future. After Sonic the Hedgehog arrives in the region, he manages to re-write Tidal Tempest's history and revert Eggman's effects in the region. Eventually arriving at the end of Tidal Tempest, Sonic comes across Eggman in his Egg Mobile. The two of them proceed to have a battle underwater, with the doctor using air bubbles to defend himself. Using Eggman's strategy to his advantage however, Sonic defeats Eggman, who promptly retreats. Gameplay Switches that can be found in various places around Tidal Tempest and serve many purposes when pressed. This includes opening up for hidden rooms and passages, opening doors on both horizontal and vertical places (only to close up after the playable character passes through them). and underwater fans that create water currents that will push the playable character around. While carried around by the aforementioned water currents, the player can influence the direction their character is heading in by pressing left or right on . There are also large pipes in Tidal Tempest that can will carry the playable character to different locations, much like the water currents. Zone 2 features unique gimmicks that can only be seen in specific timelines. In the present, cyan statues depicting a face appear that can shoot harmless water blast streams that can push the playable character in the direction they are facing. In the past, a trio of green blocks may also appear. These blocks make form a 90 degree angle. When stepping on their edges, these blocks will rotate 90 degrees in the direction where the playable character had stepped on. In the future, iron balls may appear either as standard obstacles or rotating in specific patterns. At the very bottom of the Zone near the goal of the Zone, there may also be a Switch that, when activated, will disappear and release air bubbles (in the bad future) or Rings (in the good future) shortly afterwards. Near this section, there also appears a cubic machine with a giant Switch that, when stepped on, will activate the machine and send the playable character to a higher point. In the present, Quartz Quadrant is a purple-colored mine bustling with machinery located in Little Planet, and filled with crystals and conveyor belts. Some of the crystal is being transported while some are left lying around. Outdoors, some brown mountains with vegetation and a lake adorn the region's background. Past In the past, Quartz Quadrant is a green, peaceful cavern adorned with wooded accents, where a very large quantity of crystals jut out from some type of blue-green ooze. Outside the cavern, a lagoon is seen showing dead driftwood in a lake with green vegetation and purple mountains in the background. FutureBad In the bad future, Quartz Quadrant is an over-mechanized, olive-green rusted mine under Dr. Eggman's influence where all the quartz has seemingly been mined out. A river of what appears to be lava or molten quartz runs through the bottom of the Round, with many machines on its bank. Outside the mines, polluting factories stretch out for miles, pumping their caustic exhaust into a fiery red-orange sky. Good In the good future, Quartz Quadrant is an underground, green-colored utopian city with glowing buildings hidden inside the Round's underground caverns. All mining has ceased by this point, and opulent towers of quartz gleam through the darkness. Outside the mines, some futuristic turquoise domes appear in the background, with mountains and forestry beyond them. A wall is seen at the mid-height section of the Round featuring the same type of domes. There are no active mines or swamps here in this timeline, but more crystals are found here than in any of the timelines. Story Having invaded Little Planet, which includes Quartz Quadrant, Dr. Eggman would install robot teleporters in the past and infest the region with Badniks. He would also put up some Metal Sonic holograms to terrorize the Animals that live there. Using these elements, Eggman managed to conquer the future of the planet and rewrite history in his own image. As such, Quartz Quadrant would be turned into some kind of cylindrical-shaped factory in the future, whose actions would pollute Little Planet and devastate nearby regions. After Sonic the Hedgehog arrives in the region, he manages to re-write Quartz Quadrant's history and revert Eggman's effects in the region. He also ends up battling Eggman in a trap room deep inside Quartz Quadrant. Unfortunately for the doctor, Sonic manages to defeat him, prompting him to retreat. Gameplay Quartz Quadrant is a rather expansive level with many different routes the player can take. The main gimmick of Quartz Quadrant is the abundant use of colorful conveyor belts that either speed up or slow down Sonic when running with or against them, respectively, and can change their direction via large switches placed throughout the level. Some paths in level also feature vertical tunnels made out of these conveyor belts that can be used to shoot the player up or down to the next floor, depending on where the conveyor belts are travelling. A common set piece in Quartz Quadrant is its long, empty hallways that periodically break up the upper floors of the Round, often separated by red springs that launch the player over to the other side. The Wacky Workbench is a large factory/warehouse located in a canyon region on Little Planet. The region is located between Metallic Madness and Stardust Speedway. Inside, there are purple walkways and many abstract mechanisms present, such as hovering platforms, grounded police sirens, a flickering checkered floor that allows Sonic to bounce to higher areas, and atom-like structures that are constantly generating electric currents at eight-second intervals that can harm Sonic. Exhaust vents have the adverse effect of freezing Sonic if he comes into contact with them. Past In the Past, the Wacky Workbench is under construction, with its various girders and platforms taking on an emerald green color. There is a red-colored canyon in the background with unusually designed construction cranes and various scaffolds and girders looming below it. The past is just as wacky as it is in the present timeline, featuring machines that may or may not have been conserved for future use; for instance, the checkered floor remains a prominent part of this level, and the other various devices that are found in the present are still here. However, more often shown in the second Zone, there are more checkered floors mounted on what looks like scaffolding that are not present in any other time period. Future Bad In the Bad Future, the Wacky Workbench is ruined, rusty, and has suffered from neglect. Although the mechanisms are the same as they were in the present, they have fallen into disrepair and have become more dangerous. The factory seems like it will collapse at any second, with many of the support beams and lights adorning the place badly damaged. The checkered floor is constantly flickering uncontrollably compared to its earlier appearances. The electrical conduits generate electricity at four-second intervals, making them even more hazardous. Good In the Good Future, the Wacky Workbench has become a seemingly pink/purple toy factory with many of its hazardous functions and weapons replaced by what appears to be advanced, safer and more efficient technology. Also, it is now littered with many odd features that are colorful and whimsical, such as geometric shapes and an almost circus-like aesthetic. Like in its Bad Future counterpart, the checkered floor flickers constantly, but the electrical conduits are fully deactivated in this time period. Story Having invaded Little Planet, which includes Wacky Workbench, Dr. Eggman would install robot teleporters in the past and infest the region with Badniks. He would also put up some Metal Sonic holograms to terrorize the Animals that live there. Using these elements, Eggman managed to conquer the future of the planet and rewrite history in his own image. As such, Wacky Workbench would become become an abandoned, rusty and dangerous region to visit in the future. After Sonic the Hedgehog arrives in the region, he manages to re-write Wacky Workbench's history and revert Eggman's effects in region, thereby transforming Wacky Workbench into some kind of toy factory. At the end of the region, he also comes across Eggman in the Egg Razer. After a grueling battle, Sonic manages to defeat Eggman, who retreats in defeat. In the present timeline, Stardust Speedway is a highway adorned with brass instruments above an enormous city, which glows with many lights during mid-night. A statue of Dr. Eggman can be seen undergoing construction in Zone 2, adorned with girders and incomplete sections. Past In the past, Stardust Speedway's background features a Greco-Roman-style city, complete with an acropolis, pantheons, and surrounding towns. Due to the lack of technology, the urban sprawl is dark and sparsely dotted with lights, but some stars can still be seen in the night sky. The Zone is seemingly entangled by vines as well. It also has a Gothic-styled building in the center of Zone 2. FutureBad In the bad future, Stardust Speedway has become a corrupted, polluted dystopian city underneath a foreboding, stormy red sky with a completed statue of Dr. Eggman in the center of Zone 2. The cityscape has taken on a harsh neon-pink hue, while the roads and instruments have become corroded, broken-down and discolored, and are now an unsightly shade of oxidized pale-green. The thick red storm clouds brewing in the skies above make it so that no stars can be seen at all. Good In the good future, Stardust Speedway is a giant amusement park, with bright pink and green colors dominating the landscape. It looks upon a vast bay with bright cities and boats in the distance, and the Dr. Eggman statue has been replaced by a giant glowing castle in Zone 2. More stars can be seen in this time period's dark-green sky than in any other. Story Having invaded Little Planet, which includes Stardust Speedway, Dr. Eggman would install robot teleporters in the past and infest the region with Badniks. He would also put up some Metal Sonic holograms to terrorize the Animals that live there. Using these elements, Eggman managed to conquer the future of the planet and rewrite history in his own image. As such, Stardust Speedway's city would be ruined as a result of the constant storms there caused by the pollution on the planet in the future. After Sonic the Hedgehog arrives in the region, he manages to re-write Stardust Speedway's history and revert Eggman's effects in the region, thereby turning Stardust Speedway into an amusement park. In the meantime, Sonic comes across his robotic doppelganger and Eggman's newest henchbot: Metal Sonic. With Eggman arriving on the scene in his Egg Mobile immediately after, Metal Sonic challenges Sonic to a race, which Sonic readily engages in with his new rival. As they race, Metal Sonic pulls out all the stops while Eggman tries to fry those that fall too far behind. Ultimately though, Sonic crosses the finish line first, and Metal Sonic crashes into the wall that closes up behind Sonic as he crosses the finish line, leaving Metal Sonic in pieces. At the finish line, Sonic also finds Amy Rose tied to a mast, and Sonic promptly frees Amy before proceeding to Metallic Madness.Gameplay The floor in Metallic Madness has built-in turbines, so the playable character must watch out for death traps such as moving buzz-saws, cages with spinning bars, and spinning blades on wheels. There are also Springs on moving wheels, which can make it tricky to reach higher places. Towards the end of Zone 2, Sonic gets shrunk down to a quarter of his original size upon passing through a shrink ray, allowing him to fit into smaller passages and jump higher. At the end of the shrinking mini-maze, Sonic returns to his normal size. In the present, Metallic Madness is a green-tinted factory owned by Dr. Eggman. The floor has built-in turbines. In addition, some small plaques with Eggman's face adorn the buildings. In Zone 1, the factory is full of green and red turbines. In Zone 2 on the other hand, Metallic Madness features gigantic machines that can be seen in the background. Past In the past, Metallic Madness is under construction, though many of the machines and computers appear intact and functional with a lavender hue. Building girders are strewn about the ceilings and floors in many areas, construction cones can be seen on the ground and the metal shines with a soft, light purple hue. Many parts of the Round also appear either absent or unfinished, with many elements having been replaced with floating blocks in some places. In Zone 1, most of the local factory appears unfinished as well, revealing some hanging wires, a magenta sky with orange clouds, and many construction machines in the background. In Zone 2, Metallic Madness takes place fully outside, with the gigantic machines from the Present having been replaced with cranes and girders that can be spotted under a light blue sky with white clouds. Future Bad In the bad future, Metallic Madness appears foreboding and in a state of great decay, as if it has been abandoned for years. The machinery and surrounding walls and flooring have a rusted brownish-green hue to them, with a pitch black background illuminated with multicolored mechanical pillars and countless computer consoles. Though functional, many of the surrounding mechanisms -- if not the entire base itself -- appears cracked, broken, and desperately clinging onto whatever electrical power it can, as if in danger of shutting down at any time. Both Zones feature the same general layout as in the present, though with different color tones and broken-down machines. Good In the good future, Metallic Madness has become a botanic laboratory of some kind, with the metal walls and floors looking sleek and clean with a bright blue hue. Mechanical plants and fountains adorn specific areas. Miles of forestry have sprung up all around it, as if Eggman was never there. The plaques also no longer show Eggman's face; instead, they have been replaced with peculiar-looking symbols. The place looks almost like a sprightly, futuristic laboratory where Animals dance freely and victoriously amidst the corridors. Despite the lighter feel, however, many dangerous traps are still present. In Zone 1, the turbines have been replaced with machines that feature domes with big plants inside them. In Zones 2 and 3, the Round takes place entirely outdoors, revealing a clean, light blue sky with clouds, geometric and blue-purple buildings, and small laboratories covered in miles of vegetation. Story Having invaded Little Planet, Dr. Eggman would construct Metallic Madness and install robot teleporters in the past in order to infest the region with Badniks. Thanks to this, Eggman managed to conquer the future of the planet and rewrite history in his own image. As such, in the future, Metallic Madness and therefore, Eggman's base in general, would turn into a cold and rusty abandoned base, albeit with all of its machines working properly. After Sonic the Hedgehog arrives in the region, he manages to re-write Metallic Madness's history and revert Eggman's effects in the region. Unlike many other things Eggman had done to the planet however, Metallic Madness is not removed from existence due to Sonic's meddling; instead, a remodel would take over the base, turning it into some kind of botanic laboratory. Traveling into the complex Sonic faces Eggman in a final showdown. In the end, Sonic wins, thereby triggering a chain reaction that causes Eggman's entire base to crumple, thus forcing Sonic to escape Little Planet with Amy Rose. The locations of little planet are, palmtree panic:a lush tropical jungle. collision chaos:a futuristic city that is polluted. tidal tempest: a underground water cave full of temples. quartz quadrant: a mine built next to a huge lake full of pretty multicolored gems and crystals. wacky workbench: a factory filled with machinery and gizmos. stardust speedway: a huge dazzling area of spotlights and starry nights. metallic madness: robotnik's home base full of traps and robots. The situation is that robotnik is back on little planet again.
