She is a minor character who first appeared in "The Thanksgiving Special". Mordecai's mom, Hilary, is a warm and loving mother who can also be unintentionally embarrassing and a little overbearing. This combination often puts Mordecai in awkward situations, especially when he's trying to impress his girlfriends. Advertisement Biography Not much is known about Mordecai's parents, except that they have been married for 25 years ("Maxin' and Relaxin'") and that Mordecai is their only son. During Thanksgiving Dinner, they visited Mordecai at the Park and had a lovely time; later, CJ and Mordecai came to their house for dinner. Hilary is constantly embarrassing her son (unintentionally) by taping Mordecai's most embarrassing moments (which she calls Mordy Moments). Mordecai is terrified that CJ will leave him after meeting his mother, to the point that he asks his dad to get her out of the house so they can stop by and pick up a mix-tape. His dad doesn't follow through with his son's request (as he hasn't told a lie to her in 25 years of marriage) and Mordecai spends the evening being mean to his mom, asking her to be "normal". Mordecai finally realizes that his actions aren't justified and that he should just enjoy the Mordy Moments as it's the embarrassing things in life that make us who we are. When they were getting the groceries out, they saw the park rising up into Space to which they worriedly saw their son was in the dome. In the series finale, William and Hillary ran through the crowd hugging Mordecai and Hillary kissed Mordecai on the cheek. Hilary appears to like jogging and keeping fit. As she does "punchercize" class regularly. She is also shown in "Sad Sax" riding a fitness bike while she gives Mordecai advice on how to win CJ back after he kissed Margaret under mistletoe at a Christmas party in "Merry Christmas Mordecai". Appearance Blue Jay Parents Hilary and her husband in The Thanksgiving Special Hilary is a female blue jay who resembles her son Mordecai. However, unlike her son, she does not have white stripes on her arms or blue feathers anywhere on her head. She has blonde hair and wears a wedding ring. Her appearance changes between the episodes she appears in: in "The Thanksgiving Special," she has chin-length blonde hair and wears a long orange dress with a pearl necklace. Unlike her following appearances she has blue feathers on her head. In "Maxin' and Relaxin'," her hair-style has changed and she wears a salmon-colored shirt and white pants, and there are no blue feathers on her head. When she does fitness or "punchercize" she wears a pink singlet, purple track suit pants, pink sneakers, and she also wears sweatbands on her arms and a white and magenta strap on her head. She wears them in both "Maxin' and Relaxin'" briefly and in "Sad Sax." Advertisement Trivia Hilary has two voice actors, Jennifer Hale voiced her in "The Thanksgiving Special," and Katey Sagal voiced her in "Maxin' and Relaxin'" onwards. It is debatable how far Mordecai's parents actually live: during The Thanksgiving Special, they apparently needed to take a plane to the city where the park is, but in "Maxin' and Relaxin" and all proceeding episodes and the movie it appears to be within driving distance. Despite Mordecai having crested blue "hair" like a typical blue jay, his parents have human like blonde and brown hair. Mordecai did have brown human like hair from his preteen to late teen years, but it was cut/dyed given his created blue hair is his natural style. Mordecai's mom appears to work out normally as shown in "Maxin' and Relaxin'," and "Sad Sax." William and Hilary both share the same first name of former President and First Lady William and Hilary Clinton, respectively. According to Calvin Wong, Mordecai's mother is named "Hilary."[1] She's named after Hilary Florido, a former storyboard artist on the show and now the storyboard artist on "Steven Universe."[2] The voice of Mordecai's mom, Katey Sagal, has played a mother three other times in her career. First she played Peg Bundy on the Fox Series Married with Children, next was 8 Simple Rules as Bridget's mother, and The Big Bang Theory as Penny's mother. CJ is voiced by Linda Cardellini. Appearance CJ is a cloud-humanoid with white skin and a cloud-like head and "hair" that looks as if it's tied in a ponytail with a big bushy fringe on top. Advertisement Personality CJ has a kind, laid back, and cool personality, being an individual who enjoys a lot of the same things that Mordecai does, including video games, rock bands, and generally goofing off, though she is responsible and deeply cares for her friends. In the episode "Maxin' and Relaxin'", she jokingly boasts that’s shes funny and smart. The Phone Guardians call her witty and independent. This doesn't mean she won't tease or make fun of others, although it is usually good-spirited. She is also a pro at mini golf, although she resents it as her dad, who is a champion mini golfer, taught her and his highly competitive nature ruined it for her, up until "Daddy Issues" where she competed against him and won, while also earning his respect and an apology. She’s also been shown to be quite skilled at dodgeball as well. However, befitting her cloud-like nature, if pushed too far, CJ’s body will start to turn reddish grey with thunder, and if not quickly calmed down she will morph into a mass array of thunder storms with rain, lightning, and damaging winds. She has a hard time controlling her negative emotions to the point where she can become violent when angry and/or upset, such as over a mistake she made or a misunderstanding, and she'll usually act irrational and go into her storm state without her knowing the whole story, or without the other person explaining themselves. It’s also been shown she’s prone to having trust issues, especially if someone has betrayed her trust before. However, she’s also been shown to try and amend her own faults and give second chances, which in most cases, particularly with Mordecai and Margaret, has just led to her getting hurt and becoming distrustful again. Her head initially looked like a regular cloud as opposed to the more humanoid look it has currently. Michele Cavin describes CJ as knowing who she is and what she wants. Her and Mordecai’s relationship gave the writers new opportunities for stories because they two start as friends and build their relationship from there. Mordecai doesn’t make the same mistakes he made with Margaret - when he realizes he likes her he just goes for it and asks her out. Kat Morris thought CJ initially came off as just an irrational female character so it was changed so the blame was more equally distributed. Background Not much is known about CJ's past. S6E03.084 Carl Putter Saying Too Slow Carl Putter gloating in front of a young CJ after not letting her win CJ is the daughter of golfing pro Carl Putter - CJ’s last name is not Putter and it is just her dad’s golf name. Unfortunately for her whenever they played mini golf he would always get over competitive, be overly critical of her, and would never let her win and rubbed it in her face when she lost. She eventually reached her edge when she participated in a mini-golf tournament, after Carl berated her for putting her ball to stop just before the moving obstacle, and the fact she was ok with getting second place, saying it was first place for losers. CJ angrily bends her gold club over her leg and storms off, quitting mini golf and not playing until later as an adult. Her mother is never seen or mentioned. She was in color guard in the ninth grade, at one point doing a routine to "Whoomp! There It Is!". She did motor cross when she was younger too, and has a motorcycle license. She joined Couple Corral at some point before the events of ”Yes Dude Yes" - her previous profile pictures showing her having gone though a few different hairstyles and revealing she went through a goth phase at one point. S7E36.433 CJ and the Kids Watching the Park Rise CJ working as a tour guide Throughout the series, her occupation was unknown, with the fact she has a job only being mentioned in "Yes Dude Yes", and in "I Like You Hi" where she mentions she’ll be able to watch as there’s a tv at work. "Rigby's Graduation Day Special" reveals that she is a city tour guide, as she’s shown with a whistle and a sash reading ”tour guide" as she leads a group of kids. It’s unknown if she has always had this job. She lives in a first floor apartment in the city with the number 206, it appears to be a studio judging that CJ has a futon in the living room. Relationships Love Interests Mordecai S3E25.060 Mordecai laughs with his mouth open After meeting on Couple Corral, Mordecai befriends CJ which helps him get out of a depressive episode Mordecai used to be CJ's boyfriend. She was the second serious girlfriend he was shown having within the show. CJ is introduced in "Yes Dude Yes" as one of the dates Mordecai is set up with by the "Couple Corral" - a dating website that Rigby signed him up for to get him out of his depressed state, caused by him thinking that Margaret is engaged. Mordecai showed no interest on any of the dates he had been on, with CJ initially being no expectation. She asks what’s up with him, and he confesses that his friend only had him sign up for the site to get him out of his funk, and that he’s not really interested in dating. CJ assures him it’s ok and they can be friends. The two are shown to have many shared interests, such as video games, grilled cheese, music, laser tag and action films, and hanging out and having fun with CJ does pull Mordecai out of his depression. CJ soon begins to have a romantic feelings for Mordecai, and misinterprets his invite to the movies as him returning those feelings. S3E25.155 Mordecai getting sucked towards CJ Mordecai causes CJ to go hurricane mode after she catches him inviting Margaret to the same film he invited her to When Mordecai learns that Margaret is not engaged he almost immediately forgets about CJ, and ends up inviting her to the same film he asked CJ out to (as he initially got the tickets to ask Margaret out). CJ walks into the coffee shop at the very moment he does this, causing her to erupt into a deadly storm, both out of feeling lead on and betrayed . Mordecai is able to calm her down by apologizing and explaining that he only thought of them as friends. CJ accepts, but she’s is still very hurt and refuses his offer to still be friends as she bitterly leaves the wrecked coffee shop. She briefly appears in "Survival Skills" in a hallucination where she and Margaret are fighting. S5E14.101 CJ Kissing Mordecai CJ kisses Mordecai at midnight on New Years, the two of them initially not knowing who the other is due to their face masks After Margaret leaves to go to college and turns down his offer to be his girlfriend in "Steak Me Amadeus", CJ and Mordecai meet again at the New Year's Eve party in "New Year's Kiss". Rigby accidentally pushes Mordecai into CJ, though because it was a masquerade party they don't recognize each other. After a friendly conversation, where they both reveal they had dates that didn't work out, CJ, due to being surrounded by the other kissing couples, says that they can still make the best out of the remaining minute of midnight. She then kisses Mordecai who quickly accepts her kiss. After they take off their masks CJ is shocked to see that she was kissing Mordecai and, while Mordecai is distracted by Rigby, she flees the party. There is some ambiguity as to whether Rigby, who was under instructions from his future self to prevent Mordecai from kissing the wrong girl, successfully saved Mordecai from an unhappy future by ruining his "real" date with Tracy Hashtag or if he created this future by reintroducing Mordecai and CJ leading to a potentially doomed relationship. The following episode, "Dodge This", continues the story just days after the kiss when CJ and Mordecai play against each other’s teams in a dodge ball tournament. This leads to awkwardness between them in the final round of the tournament and they are forced to address their issues before the Intergalactic Dodgeball Council. They attempt to fix things by admitting they were afraid the other was upset. CJ and Mordecai agree to be friends again. When they are sent back to the game, CJ takes the opportunity to win the tournament by hitting Mordecai with the ball. In "Portable Toilet", CJ has lunch with Mordecai, Rigby and Eileen. She accidentally gets Mordecai and Rigby into serious trouble after daring Mordecai to eat a sandwich in a portable toilet. The door gets stuck and the toilet is sent to be destroyed at a military target range. CJ gets upset, to the point where her skin starts to turn grey, and blames herself because "things finally stopped being weird with Mordecai" and now she’s responsible for him potentially getting killed. CJ and Eileen leap into another toilet being hauled away and manage to save the guys. They then watch the missiles demolish the portable toilets. Mordecai then notes that CJ is "pretty cool." In "Video 101", CJ is shown helping Eileen with her music video. On the side, she finds time to make wise/teasing remarks to Mordecai; "burning" him, as Rigby states, twice in that episode. S5E26CJ & Mordecai with the burger Mordecai and CJ's friendship (and feelings) grows as they continue to hang out In "I Like You Hi", Mordecai begins to realize that he has romantic feelings for CJ, but he's hesitant to admit them because he also still has feelings for Margaret, and part of him is still waiting for her to come back. While watching X-Extreme Barista, Mordecai's phone accidentally auto-corrects "I like Yuji" to "I like you hi". CJ replies almost sarcastically "I like you too. Hi", much to Mordecai's embarrassment. Thanks to the Phone Guardians, Mordecai is finally able to ask CJ out on a date, to which she replies with a "wink" face and a confirmation leaving Mordecai relieved. S5E27Mordecai and CJ Kiss Mordecai and CJ’s first official kiss after their first date In "Play Date", CJ and Mordecai plan to go on a date but instead they get stuck babysitting Thomas (Death's son). Thomas insists that they take him to the playground; Mordecai is miserable but CJ insists that they can still have fun together. Thomas, unhappy about the park's playground, throws a tantrum and causes a small earthquake. He demands to go to the underworld playground instead and that he will show them the way. Despite Thomas' attempts to ruin their date, the two manage to share their first (intentional) kiss, which cements them as officially boyfriend and girlfriend]. Even though Mordecai still doesn't consider CJ as his girlfriend (because he hasn't officially asked her and they just started dating), one could tell that they are quickly connecting. It is also proven that CJ is adapting fast to the 'irregular' things that happen when she is with Mordecai. In the episode "Skips in the Saddle", it is revealed that Mordecai and CJ were going to a laser light show together, hinting that their relationship is growing and connecting. Rigby even teases him the next day, saying: "Did you put your arm around CJ?" S5E37.172 Mordecai and CJ Kiss During a Sunrise Mordecai and CJ kiss as the sun rises the morning after their first "real date" In the episode "Real Date", after a month of being together, CJ and Mordecai plan to go on their first actual romantic date. However, they both run into a problem. They both want to give each other surprise gifts, without Mordecai wanting CJ knowing and vice versa. Rigby and Eileen team up, after finding out that Mordecai and CJ are planning to surprise each other. Together, Eileen and Rigby set up a table with candles, along with the two gifts. After finding the table in surprise, they both are heart-warmed. However, Matchmaker McIntyre, the CEO of Couple Corral, begins to ruin their plans, as he wants them to break up and rejoin his site since he’s gone back riot due to all the site's members getting paired up. He shoots a "match-breaker" bazooka at CJ, and to CJ and his surprise, Mordecai pushes her out of the way, launching his unconscious body onto the beach next to the broken pier. CJ angrily turns into a massive storm-cloud, striking McIntyre's hot-air balloon with lightning, thus causing a fire; exploding the submarine he was in. Shortly after, CJ finds Mordecai unconscious on the ground, and CJ begins moaning and sobbing in pain, thinking he died. Surprisingly, Mordecai awakens to CJ's delight, and he gives her his gift; a charm bracelet with the very first activities they did together, but the charms had melded into a heart due to the bazooka blast. After a short romantic conversation, they share a kiss while the sun rises. S6E01.004 Mordecai and CJ Breakdown CJ and Mordecai "breaking down" to "WHOOMP! There It Is!" A few months later, in the episode "Maxin' and Relaxin'", CJ meets and is well-liked by Mordecai's mom and dad, though he is initially apprehensive about her encountering his embarrassing mom and seeing home movies of his awkward youth. He is eventually convinced by his past selves that a cool lady like CJ can handle this and that she would not be cool with someone who was a jerk to his mom. She eventually enjoys the home movies with him and accepts several mixtapes he made in high school. In the episode "Daddy Issues", Mordecai (along with Eileen and Rigby) persuades CJ to take on mini golf after she has giving up the sport over an incident with her father. However, when she participates in the Putterpalooza, she spots her father handing out autographs. When they converse, she could see that he is as egotistical and cocky as before and Mordecai, being the supportive boyfriend that he is, defends her and tell her father that the trash talk that he is giving her is "not cool". However, her father shuts him down when he called him a "sensitive guy" and that the only trophy he probably won was for crying. This enrages CJ so she signs the registration form and says that she would put her father in his place. During the game, you see Mordecai supporting her all the way; even when they hit the sudden death round. He happened to hear her scream and without hesitation, he goes to save her from the monstrous gophers that were attacking her and her father; helping her win the Putterpalooza. In "Lift With Your Back", there is a small part in the beginning of the episode where she hangs out with Mordecai, goes to the movies, and has Mordecai move her couch; all of this being a way to spend some time with her boyfriend. Unfortunately, this was at the expense of him sneaking out of work; leaving Rigby to cover for him. S6E10.122 CJ Kissing Mordecai CJ kisses Mordecai after assuring her he only has feelings for her In "Merry Christmas Mordecai", Eileen invites Mordecai and Rigby to her Christmas Sweater Party, and Mordecai says he and CJ will be there, and that it’s their first Christmas together. She also mentions that Margaret would be coming for it; making Mordecai fearful of doing something he would regret. At the party, Mordecai tries his best to prevent CJ from seeing Margaret. But then when they officially meet, they do not remember the past incident until Mordecai refreshes their memory, making things awkward. When Margaret leaves, Mordecai explains Margaret being at the party is why he’s been so nervous, as he didn’t want CJ to think he still had feelings for her. When CJ asks if he does, Mordecai assures her he doesn’t, and she kisses him, as she believes and trusts him, and Mordecai finally enjoys the party alongside her. As everyone starts kissing their dates, Mordecai goes to find CJ, but encounters Margaret instead. He explains everything about their breakup and his new girlfriend, and they finally lift tension. S6E10.187 CJ Turning Gray and Crying CJ heartbroken at seeing Mordecai and Margaret kiss But then, in the middle of remembering the good times they had with each other, they wind up kissing each other. When they realizes this, it was too late because CJ had already seen what happen with Mordecai and Margaret. Heartbroken over what she had just witnessed, she runs out of Eileen's house crying and drives away before Mordecai could catch her. In "Sad Sax", Mordecai tries to get CJ to forgive him - at first they meet at the coffee shop where he assures her the kiss meant nothing, but just when she’s about to accept his apology Margaret calls him, playing the ringtone he sang about her and showing a romantic photo of the two as her contact photo, angering CJ and making her storm out. S6E11.036 Nice custom ringtone, you jerk "Nice custom ring tone you jerk!" - CJ getting the wrong impression after Margaret unexpectedly calls Mordecai when he’s trying to make up with her Mordecai continues to try and earn her forgiveness, but with listening to Sad Sax Guy horrible advices, they backfire and CJ would walk away in disgust, even hitting Mordecai in the head with a sign when he faked his death from getting hit by a bus. At one point, at Sad Sax Guy’s advice, Mordecai meets up with Margaret to see if she could talk to CJ , but she doesn’t think getting involved is a good idea, and CJ ends up driving by and seeing them hug, angering her once again. Later, she sees Mordecai, while stealing a scissor lift, put up some taken down Christmas lights on a house across the street telling how sorry he is and wants to talk, and CJ was moved by this. S6E11.218 Mordecai and CJ Kiss CJ officially forgives Mordecai, and they rekindle their relationship with a kiss After he is beaten up by the construction workers, CJ visits Mordecai in the hospital where she genuinely asks what is going on with him and Margaret. Mordecai honestly tells her that he used to love Margaret, and their breakup deeply affected him, but is now over her after the events of "Steak Me Amadeus" and are now just friends. CJ accepts his apology, a mistletoe is placed on the metal hospital rod and they kiss on the lips, rekindling their relationship. In "I See Turtles”, she confides in Mordecai about feeling bad about overhearing Eileen telling Rigby that she wishes she could’ve invited Margaret to their outing to watch baby sea turtles hatch. CJ tells him she doesn’t want Eileen to feel caught in the middle, but at the moment she can’t handle being around Margaret at the moments since she’s still hurt over what her and Mordecai did. Wow CJ sounds great let's hope you can save her before she becomes your mom's body fat like the rest of your girlfriend's.
