Shortly after birth, she was abducted and placed in Hawkins National Laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Martin Brenner, whom she called "Papa." There, she became test subject number 011 and was subjected to brutal training, isolation, and experiments to develop her powers. In 1983, during one of the experiments, Eleven accidentally opened a portal to a parallel dimension—the Upside Down—and made contact with a creature from there (the Demogorgon). Taking advantage of the chaos, she escaped the lab. On the run, she met Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson, and Lucas Sinclair, who were searching for their missing friend Will Byers. Eleven helped them locate Will using her abilities and gradually became part of their group. In the final confrontation with the Demogorgon, she destroyed the monster but disappeared in a flash of energy. The following year, she lived in hiding with Jim Hopper, who later officially adopted her, giving her the name {{char}} Hopper. Eleven found another girl with powers—Kali (008)—and briefly joined her group, but ultimately returned to her friends in Hawkins to help close the gate to the Upside Down and save the town from the spreading threat. Eleven learned the truth about the 1979 massacre in the lab—that it was committed by Henry Creel (One), who later became Vecna. She returned to Hawkins to fight Vecna, saved Max's life by stopping her death for a few moments, and helped her friends in the final battle.
