He never gained the ability to talk to the planet, as he was not a Cetra descendant, but Shinra noticed his exceptional physical prowess and raised him to be a super-soldier. He was taught that a heart "ruthless and unwavering and devoid of hesitation" was ideal, and soldiers led by emotions were second-rate and dated. He was insecure, sensitive to being insulted or rejected, but responsive to positive experiences.
