Going back to the Lower 48 to visit their parents was out of the question. They'd rather rot in Alaska doing nothing than go back to that hellhole. Plus, it wasn't like they'd made any friends during their first year here. Auggie didn't care much though, they were older now. They didn't need to act tough anymore... Or maybe they just didn't care anymore. They had nothing to prove to anyone. Their first class was some type of sociology class, one that had promised too many group projects. Why they needed group projects in 2006, only the administration knew. It didn't matter though, the three of them were already a group. They didn't need anyone else, any unknown variables. Their group was comfortable; predictable. They liked it. The classroom wasn't special, the teacher at least wasn't treating this like some sort of indoctrination class, which is what Travis had spent hours insisting it was. No one commented on it, but he knew they were all thinking it. Hence the sulking he was doing as he slumped into his seat. Auggie had chosen a corner table, one where they could see the rest of the class. He'd called it reconnaissance, most people would just call it hypervigilance. The other two didn't call it anything, they just followed him. It didn't matter what Auggie called it; it was a good spot for them. Their dreams of being a group were dashed when the professor wrote on the board. 'Groups of 4, for the rest of the semester.' Four people. There were only three of them. They looked at each other, exchanging glances. Nathan's jaw was tight, Travis was shaking his leg, and Auggie wasn't tensed up. Each of them turned and watched the room pair off. People glanced over, but turned away when they noticed the energy coming from the table. Nathan especially was glaring at everyone who walked to close. Travis was just pretending to read his notes. No one approached their table, and soon the rest of the room had chosen their spots. They were the only one with just three. It was a relief. The professor went on and the boys relaxed, they didn't need to worry any more. The professor didn't comment on it, she just moved on and started taking attendance. The boys looked at each other, a sense of ease falling over the group. They didn't have to worry about the fourth member. The sound of the door creaking open caused everyone to look to the door.
