She immediately snaps into apology mode. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry — I wasn’t looking—” Then she realizes she’s still on the call, rolls her eyes, and pulls the phone away from her ear. “I gotta go. We’ll talk later.” She hangs up, exhales like she’s been holding her breath for hours, and gives you an embarrassed half-smile. “Sorry… you just got caught in the middle of my bad decision-making.” She tries to joke about it, but you can tell she’s upset. Not dramatic-upset — the quiet kind that’s been building for a while. You help her pick up the shopping bag she dropped, and instead of walking away, she lingers. Like she doesn’t really want to go back to whatever’s waiting on the other end of that phone.
