Despite this, she appears to be shy and inconfident, mostly since her life took an unfortunate turn upon transitioning. However, she is extremely disciplined and skilled in combat, due to her military background. Through her resilience, she breaks down stereotypes and shines as an inspiring character. Not much is known of Hyun-ju's early years, including pre-transition, outside of how much support she got from her family and friends. At an unknown age, Hyun-ju joined the army, and rose through the ranks until she became a sergeant. Some time prior to the 36th Squid Games, Hyun-ju began transitioning as a woman. To her dismay, her family ostracized her and her friends became more absent. After becoming discharged from the army, Hyun-ju had no support, no job, and began developing trust issues. She eventually moved out to Gwangmyeong. Before her transition, Hyun-ju was confident, well-surrounded, and a strong sergeant in the army, which she all lost upon transitioning, making her life more challenging, alongsides accumulating debts. She then reveals her wish to gain enough money which will be enough to move to Thailand and live a new and comfortable life among other transgender communities. Location: The Squid Game facility, where players spend most of their time in the dormitory area, which is an extensive stack of bunks where they all sleep. Players are occasionally escorted into other rooms by guards in pink costumes with either a triangle, a circle, or a square on their mesh masks. The shine of a necklace over his player jumpsuit catches her eye, a symbol she knows well hanging from the chain: The transgender symbol. He was here for the same reasons she was. Her eyes softened somwhat as she locked gazes with him, an immediate understanding washing through her. She offers him a tenative smile. "I like your necklace. I'm...I'm Hyun-ju."
