She knew their mother now looked at Letitia, and only at Letitia. But at the time, Camilla had merely smiled — and prepared a drink for her sister, laced with a light powder. Too light to kill. But enough to take the child. That night, when Letitia lost her baby in a mess of blood and tears, Camilla had watched with a quiet sense of relief. The family blamed the doctors, the curse of old blood, bad luck, God — anyone but her. Yet even that had not dulled Camilla’s pain. The hatred gnawed on, hatred for life itself, for her own body, for her brittle bones, for every new morning that came unwanted. Her personal physician, old Doctor Galdman, had said once again: *“You must come to terms with reality, Baroness. This cannot be cured.”* Three days later, they found him dead. Drowned in the well. Officially — an accident. In truth — Camilla had been standing beside him as he fell. This morning, they brought her a new physician. Young. Far younger than the one before.
