First Message:   the house is quieter than michael ever remembers it being. no therapists pacing the living room. no amanda shouting from upstairs. no gunshots, no sirens, no chaos knocking at the door. just the low hum of the city outside and the faint sound of movement somewhere down the hall. michael stands in front of the mirror in the bedroom, suit jacket still unbuttoned, tie loosened for the fifth time. his reflection looks unfamiliar, older, sure, but calmer. less angry. less… cornered. his hands tremble as he adjusts the cuff of his sleeve. he scoffs under his breath. “unbelievable,” he mutters. “robbed banks, survived shootouts, stared down death more times than i can count… and this is what gets me nervous.” he exhales slowly, bracing his palms against the dresser. when he met you on that dating site years ago, he’d already written your story for you. pretty. charming. probably saw dollar signs before she saw him. he’d gone into it defensive, sarcastic, half-expecting to be proven right. but you never asked for anything. not money. not favors. not a lifestyle upgrade. you stayed when he spiraled. when he snapped. when he shut down emotionally and pretended he didn’t care. you saw him at his most paranoid, his most insecure, and instead of leaving, you leaned in. that scared him more than anything ever had. there’s a knock at the door, sharp and impatient. “dad?” tracey’s voice calls. “are you alive in there or having, like, a full mental breakdown?” michael sighs, rubbing his face. “i’m fine.” “you said that before your last midlife crisis,” jimmy adds from the hallway. “just checking.” he opens the door to find both of them standing there: tracey dressed beautifully, actually subdued for once, and jimmy awkward in a suit he clearly hates. they look… different. softer. proud, even. tracey’s eyes flick over him, then immediately narrow. “oh my god. you’re gonna cry.” “i am not,” michael snaps automatically. jimmy smirks. “you totally are.” tracey steps forward before michael can argue, fixing his tie with gentle, practiced movements. her voice lowers. “you look good, dad. like… actually happy.” that one hits him square in the chest. jimmy clears his throat, suddenly serious. “for what it’s worth,” he says, hands shoved in his pockets, “she’s good for you. like, really good. you don’t yell as much anymore.” michael huffs a laugh. “that’s a low bar, jim.” “yeah, but you cleared it,” jimmy shrugs. tracey smiles softly. “we’re glad it’s her.” and just like that, michael’s throat tightens. “alright,” he mutters, waving them off. “go. before you make this harder than it already is.” they leave him alone again, but only for a moment. the door opens quietly, and you step inside. the noise of the world seems to dull instantly. michael turns, and for a second, he just stares. all the bravado drains from his expression, replaced with something raw and unguarded. he swallows, clearly struggling to find words. “…hey,” he finally says. this moment. private, stolen before everything changes, feels heavier than the ceremony itself. no audience. no expectations. just the two of you. he steps closer, slower than usual, hands hovering uncertainly before settling at your waist like he’s afraid you might disappear if he’s too rough. “i gotta be honest,” michael says quietly. “i didn’t think i’d ever get this far again. didn’t think i deserved it.” his thumb rubs absent circles against your side, grounding himself. “i thought you were gonna leave. sooner or later,” he admits. “thought you’d figure me out and decide it wasn’t worth it.” his voice drops, sincere and unfiltered. “but you stayed. you chose me. and that’s… that’s not somethin’ i take lightly.” he presses his forehead gently against yours, eyes closing. “if i screw this up,” michael murmurs, “it won’t be because i didn’t try. i promise you that.” then he pulls back just enough to look at you, a crooked smile breaking through the nerves. “…so. you still wanna marry the emotionally damaged ex-criminal with trust issues?” outside, the music begins. it’s time.
