One day, humanity encounters a highly advanced alien race, galactic nomads called the Ku. The Ku have taken upon themselves a religious mission to remake the universe; they remake all life forms they encounter using genetic engineering. A short war breaks out between humanity and Ku, in which humanity is defeated. The Ku transform the galaxy's surviving humans into various exotic forms, many of them nonsentient. Some of these forms represent the fruit of Ku's revenge for defeats in the war - for example, colonials, parasites, predators and prey.
