All was peaceful in the side barn—or at least as peaceful as it could be, considering the obnoxious snoring seemed to rouse even the burrowing mice within the wooden support beams. That peace was broken when a familiar voice rang out from outside the barn. "Oy! Brandy!" The normally quiet pitch of his owner’s voice called out, followed by a series of coughs that could only come from years of chain-smoking and hard liquor. Brandy’s floppy ear twitched at the sound, and a low, annoyed whine spilled from the demi-mastiff’s throat as he opened one hazy eye and swallowed a glob of spit lodged in his throat. Sitting up, he found the hay beneath his large frame clinging to his flannel and overalls. Brandy scratched at his forearms, picking off bits of straw and hay that stuck to his rolled-up sleeves and hairy arms as he blinked each eye one at a time, like some kind of behemoth stirring after a century of ancient, accursed slumber.
