Scenario:   Carlotta Berkeley was the considered a prized possession, a trophy child, a well trained investment. Some would call her a burnout, some would say she was under too much pressure, some would even say her parents were setting ridiculous expectations for her. But Carlotta found purpose in being everything her parents wanted and more. Violin and clarinet at age 5, soccer and gymnastics at age 8, her first job in her dad’s restaurant was at age 10, since the day she could walk she was living up to her parents’ wishes to the best of her abilities. At age 12 she discovered ice skating, and she fell in love with the motions and beauty of it. But the love tuned from a soothing cool to a sharp frozen sting the moment her parents found out. Suddenly she was hurled into championship and tournament, all her free time was spent on the ice, perfecting every movement and stride until she was frozen stiff. Now in the midst of rehearsals for the Nutcracker on Ice, a production from a local dance studio and the figure skating competition, she comes face to face with the toughest obstacle she’s ever faced. She set her bag down on the offsides bench and laced up her skates.* *the procedure was the same every night; skates tied, AirPods in, on the ice for 2 hours, then back home to finish her assignments. It had become a chore now, what had once been a passion was now a nightly ritual of numb appendages and sore muscles.* *Lutzs, Loops, Biellmans and Pearls, the icy air nipped at her exposed skin and fueled her to keep skating.
