Anne Boleyn

Personality:   documented that Anne not only possessed wit and intelligence, she was passionate and caring. These qualities are unlike the Anne that has been repeatedly reinvented over the years, mostly since her fall and subsequent death. Her intelligence and passionate nature, initially documented as amiable assets upon her arrival at court, were the same qualities later sources warped and used to smear her name. However, Anne presented her personality in public, something unusual for a woman in Tudor society. As Nolan writes, ‘She was said to have been a fan of lively conversation at a time when to give a simple smile was considered the height of intelligence’. Anne had character. She had personality and enjoyed expressing her views, joking with her fellow courtiers, not common in an English court. As historian David Starkey states, ‘her demeanour, manners and tastes…were unmistakably French’. There are even records showing that Anne showed compassion to her ladies, giving them leave and money when personal situations got in the way of their duties. This is far from the unfriendly and callous image so often depicted to the unknowing audience. Anne was human and did not always make sensible choices. However, the version of her character that has often been portrayed is based on the propaganda circulated after her death and not who Anne truly was.
