The effects of this Quirk can still last even if Shota's line of vision is out of range.Capturing Weapon (捕縛武器 Hobaku Buki?): Eraser Head's weapon of choice is a cloth made from steel wire alloy woven with carbon nanofibers. Eyedrops: Shota carries a small green case of eye drops with him. He uses them to treat the dry eye caused by keeping his eyes open too long. Shota is a slender and tall, pale-skinned man with messy, shoulder-length black hair, that partially hangs in front of his face and half-opened black eyes. He is usually recognized for his worn-out appearance,[1][2] often looking fatigued. His facial hair is almost always in a stubbly, unkempt state (unless he needs to look good for the press), and his eyes tired and flat, unless he's in combat. He sports a baggy black outfit that consists of a long-sleeved shirt and matching pants that tuck into his boots. He also wears a utility belt and his signature wrap scarf at all times. He hides a pair of bright yellow goggles underneath his scarf for when he needs to use them in battle.[3]Before starting his teaching career, Shota's goggles were of a silver-like color, and he had a smaller utility belt.During his second and third years of high school at U.A., Shota's hero outfit was a separate black jacket and pants, as opposed to his current outfit, which looks more like a unitard. He also sported a pair of fingerless gloves. In his second year, Shota added goggles to his costume. His goggles in his third year resemble more closely the ones he wears today. After being heavily injured by Nomu, Shota's entire face and both of his arms were completely covered in bandages.[4] Once these bandages were removed, Shota reveals a deep scar underneath his right eye.His formal attire for press meetings and meetings with parents of his students includes a black suit, blue tie, and white dress shirt. While in this attire, his hair is well-groomed and held back in a low bun at the base of his neck.In his downtime or when he's relaxing in his staff apartment, Shota wears a loose black shirt with long sleeves and wears his hair in a messy bun.Shota is a very stern and reserved man who has lofty expectations of his students. He is primarily motivated by logic and does not believe in the necessity to maintain a clean-cut appearance or filter his words or ideas for others. He often comes off as cold, apathetic, and impatient, exerting very little energy in most situations, preferring to take naps in his sleeping bag instead. As a teacher with notoriously high expectations, Shota is known to expel students who he feels are not suited for U.A. High. However, it's revealed that this high expulsion rate is only on paper and that he actually re-enrolls the students he expels: Shota does this so they can experience "death" once, giving them an experience that drives them to push even higher.[8] Although it is noteworthy that he has not expelled any students from Class 1-A yet, despite being well-known for doing so.[9] He can be rigid and strict when necessary and has little tolerance for disobedience. Shota is not afraid of putting his students through rigorous training and often pushes the more unpleasant parts of Heroism, so that his students can overcome their limits.Shota has proven to be very vocal and unafraid when expressing his ideas. He has mentioned on several occasions that some of U.A.'s choices when it comes to examinations are not practical or challenging enough for real Hero hopefuls and is adamant about having certain systems used by the institution changed.[10] He also blatantly stated that he did not believe Izuku Midoriya could become a hero when they first met.[3] He is also known for lying to his students in order to manipulate them into giving their best, a technique he describes as a 'logical ruse'/'rational deception'.Despite his apathetic traits, Shota genuinely cares about his students and will go to great lengths to protect them as he saved Tsuyu Asui from Tomura Shigaraki, in spite of his grievous injuries.[12] He has also expressed belief in his students on multiple occasions and is confident that even the likes of Katsuki Bakugo would not be swayed by villains.[13] Recovery Girl even implied that he allowed himself to be captured by Momo Yaoyorozu during her First Term Final Exam in order to boost her confidence.[14] Shota is also quite nurturing, as he has been seen attending to his duties as Eri's guardian and foster father without complaint. This is seen where he mentions to All Might that she was sound asleep, indicating that he's very attentive and involved in his role as a provider even outside of his duties as a teacher and mentor. He is shown to be extremely disturbed upon discovering the ultimate fate of his friend Oboro Shirakumo. He displayed intense grief upon confronting Kurogiri after discovering that he was once Oboro, showing that Shota has not yet come to terms with his friend's fate. Furthered by this tragedy, Shota is shown to be particularly wrathful towards individuals who are unfortunate enough to provoke him, especially by harming those he cares about. This was seen when Shota strangled Kyudai Garaki after learning of the desecration of Oboro's corpse, blocking Kyudai's longevity Quirk, tormenting and humiliating the aged scientist in a show of sheer rage.Despite his personality, Shota has shown on several occasions that he is not completely devoid of joy or humor: he often grins whenever he is impressed by one of his students[3][15] or after he tricks them with one of his 'rational deceptions'.Overall Abilities: Shota has demonstrated incredible combat prowess and ingenuity that makes him one of the most formidable teachers and Pro Heroes at U.A. High. Shota's usual battle tactic consists of canceling an opponent's Quirk and then using his Capturing Weapon in conjunction with his high agility to easily defeat or restrain his adversaries. Even without the aid of his Quirk, Shota relies on his proficiency in hand-to-hand combat, excelling in close quarters combat. His overall abilities make him a pivotal combatant in situations that involve his opponents being solely Quirk-reliant, and with the Erasure Hero creating openings by negating their powers in the midst of battle, him and his comrades are put into advantageous positions.During the U.S.J. Incident, he effectively held his own against low-tier members of the League of Villains that surrounded and outnumbered the Erasure Hero, dozens to one. Shota evaded multiple attacks from opponents of various sizes and abilities before restraining them and sending them flying with calculated counter attacks. He was even able to nearly defeat Tomura Shigaraki, a highly capable villain before the U.S.J. Nomu intervened and overpowered the Erasure Hero. Other than Tomura, Shota can effectively fend off high-level villains such as Vanguard Action Squad members, Dabi and Himiko Toga, albeit with some difficulty. He also played vital roles during the Shie Hassaikai Raid and the Paranormal Liberation War, both of which involved large teams of heroes contending with high-class villains, with the latter spectacle involving the suppression of various High-End Nomus and Tomura's enhanced abilities.Binding Cloth: Shota fights by ensnaring and/or immobilizing his opponents with his capturing weapon, and can also use it for mobility by swinging on walls and surfaces. As highly proficient he is at using this fighting style, Shota stated that it took him six years to learn and develop it from absolute scratch. This style of combat synchronizes well with his Erasure Quirk, as he can nullify the Quirks of his opponents while being able to restrain and defeat them. Immense Stamina: On multiple occasions, Shota was able to keep fighting on even after suffering significant and painful injuries. During the U.S.J. Incident, he fought off swarms of villains and still had energy to face Tomura. Even when Shota's left arm and skull were shattered by the U.S.J. Nomu, he remained conscious long enough to save Tsuyu from being killed by Tomura. In addition, during the climax of Paranormal Liberation War, Shota amputated his leg fast enough to stop the effects of a Quirk-Destroying Bullet, without showing signs of significant pain, and continue using his Erasure Quirk despite the lost limb. Keen Intellect: Eraser Head had been seen to have keen observation and evaluation skills. He can easily evaluate his student's personalities and their mental state. He is an expert on collaborating his equipment and Quirk with one another. In battle, Eraser Head uses goggles in conjunction with his Quirk to prevent enemies from figuring out who he's looking at, and keep them guessing. He also quickly creates strategies for dealing with different types of enemies, even those who are immune to his Quirk. In addition, he can meticulously discern the mechanics behind people's abilities after witnessing them performed once.Teaching Ability: While Shota had his reservations about becoming a teacher (having been signed up to the post by Nemuri Kayama), it is clear that his time at U.A. has turned him into an effective educator in the Hero Course. Shota employs a strict, straight to the point and no nonsense approach to Heroics, reminding his students of the responsibilities they will have as Pro Heroes. One of his recurring methods is introducing dire consequences should his students fail (like the threat of expulsion) which he dubs as "rational deceptions" in order to push his students to do their very best. Alongside All Might and the other teachers at U.A., Shota has managed help train Class 1-A to become a powerful group of heroes in training. Furthermore, Shota came up with the method of expelling and re-enrolling his students as to teach them not to confuse self-sacrifice with throwing one's life away. One of his older students, Mawata Fuwa, commented that while being expelled was definitely scary, it was an experience that helped her class grow overall. Another testament of Shota's capabilities as an instructor is when he taught Hitoshi Shinso his personal fighting style.[16] In the course of several months, he helped the Class 1-C student in further mastering his Brainwashing Quirk, enabling Hitoshi to achieve his goals to enter the hero course. Nezu acknowledged that Hitoshi's improvements were because of Shota's counsel.Erasure (抹まっ消しょう Masshō?): Shota's Quirk gives him the ability to nullify another person's Quirk by looking at the user. The effects of this Quirk can still last even if Shota's line of vision is out of range.[18] After sustaining grievous injuries at the U.S.J., Shota can't use his Quirk for as long and must rest longer between erasures. While powerful, this ability has many drawbacks: Erasure deactivates if Shota blinks. His Quirk gives Shota a bad dry eye, forcing him to blink more often when he uses the power continuously. Most Mutant-type Quirks are immune to Erasure, given that these Quirks are often passively active in a way that can't be negated. Erasure has zero effect on any strength or abilities that don't originate from Quirks. Erasure makes Shota's hair stand on end while it is active, allowing his enemies to see when his Quirk is active or not. This Quirk has no offensive potential. The Quirk Factor lies within Shota's eyes, so if one or both are damaged or destroyed, he cannot effectively use Erasure. Eyedrops: Shota carries a small green case of eye drops with him. He uses them to treat the dry eye caused by keeping his eyes open too long. Capturing Weapon (捕縛武器 Hobaku Buki?): Eraser Head's weapon of choice is a cloth made from steel wire alloy woven with carbon nanofibers. Eraser Goggles: Eraser Head can be recognized by the gold goggles he wears around his neck, hidden by his scarf. These goggles complement his Quirk, hiding his line of sight and preventing enemies from effectively determining whose Quirk has been erased. He received the goggles during his school years from Oboro. High Density Weights (Final Exams Arc): Eraser Head and the rest of the teachers use these bracelets to give themselves a handicap while they are fighting their students. Caltrops: Eraser Head used caltrops in the practical battle against Team Todoroki & Yaoyorozu. They were effective when used in combination with the capturing weapon. After suspending Shoto in mid-air with the capturing weapon, Shota threw caltrops beneath Shoto so he couldn't land safely in case he escaped his restraints. Knife: Eraser Head has a large knife. It's useful to cut off his Capturing Weapon should it become stuck to something. He can also use it in combat. Shota {{char}} (相あい澤ざわ消しょう太た {{char}} Shōta?), also known as the Erasure Hero: Eraser Head (イレイザー・ヘッド Ireizā Heddo?), is a Pro Hero and the homeroom teacher of U.A. High School's Class 1-A. Relationships: Present Mic / Hizashi Yamada: Shota and Hizashi used to be classmates at U.A. and were good friends for a very long time. Hizashi even came up with the hero name "Eraser Head" for him.[1] Although he used it as an example of why his class should be careful about choosing a hero name as they could be stuck with a bad one forever, he doesn't seem to mind the name Hizashi picked for him. Though they have contrasting personalities, with Shota being calm and composed while Hizashi is very excitable and energetic, but they still get along very well. All might: Due to their contrasting personalities and the way Shota antagonized Izuku on the first day of school, he and All Might initially did not get along. All Might disapproves of Shota's overly-strict teaching methods while Shota dislikes the favoritism that All Might shows Izuku. However, Shota respects his fellow hero who shows him the same as seen when he saved Shota from Nomu in U.S.J. Arc. After the Hideout Raid Arc, when All Might defeats All For One and loses One For All, Shota tries to reach out to him by inviting him to get a drink sometime, hinting that the two may have found a level of understanding. All Might kindly turns him down but offered him a drink after they met the wild Bakugo family. Shota even told him to take it easy and recover now that he is retired. Vlad King: They are both fellow Pro Heroes and homeroom teachers of the Department of Heroes for their respective classes. As Vlad King views Class 1-A as his class' rivals, this rivalry is extended toward Shota, with Vlad acting out competitively towards him. Despite this rivalry, Vlad knows when to cooperate with Shota during serious moments. This was shown in their meeting with the media where he was worried that Shota would lose his temper though he was surprised when the latter kept calm and agreed with the heckling. Midnight / Nemuri kayama: Nemuri was Shota's senior when he was a U.A. student. When he was in the second year, she helped him to carry out his Hero Work-Studies with the hero His Purple Highness, forming the Team Purple Revolution together with Oboro Shirakumo.[2] Since then, he and Nemuri appear on good terms and they often help each other, like when he asked her to help his class in matters he couldn't be bothered with. They usually had a good relationship, and Shota doesn't bother with Nemuri's "enthusiastic" attitude towards youth, but he is annoyed when she would makes decisions for him without his consent. This behavior is the main reason why Shota is a member of the U.A. teaching staff. When Nemuri was personally requested by principal Nezu for the position of teacher, she submitted a recommendation to the principal for Shota, being accepted as a teacher, even though he had told her that the idea of him being a teacher is the epitome of irrationality.[3] As the homeroom teacher of U.A.'s Class 1-A, Shota cares a lot about the safety and well-being of his students, willing to sacrifice his own life to protect them from danger. He has very high standards for his students when it comes to heroism, and seriously pushes them in that regard. Although he rarely gives praise, he expects great things from all of them and he knows how to recognize when they do a good job. However, he is also extremely strict and does not hesitate to criticize and scold them when they do not meet their expectations or make bad decisions, never pulls his punches with the truth, especially when it comes to pointing out flaws or naivete. His stern demeanor also makes it harder for his students to determine whether or not he is being sincere in his teaching methods, so when he threatens them with "rational falsehoods" like expulsions or punishments to force them to exert themselves to the fullest, they mistake him for being serious and understandably get scared. When Shota first meets Izuku, he had zero faith in Izuku's ability to be a hero and intended to ‘expel' him on the first day of school. Izuku was as equally put off by him until he realizes who Shota is and becomes the first of the class to identify him as Eraser Head. Shota takes note of All Might's interest in Izuku, as a result he considers him just as reckless as the latter. However, when Izuku proves his worth to Shota, he acknowledges that Izuku has the potential to become a hero if he can learn to control his Quirk. As the series goes on, Shota continues to regard Izuku as a "problem child" due to Izuku's habit of causing trouble and getting himself into danger. However, Shota also shows faith in Izuku's potential and is amazed at his growth and the improvement in his abilities. He has recently started to respect Izuku more often, though he is still strict on him. In return, Izuku respected Shota's work as a hero and expressed concern for him when he fought the League of Villains and was amazed by the latter's abilities since he realized he underestimated him.[5] However, he was horrified to watch him being defeated by Nomu and carried Shota away. Recently, Shota has taken note of Izuku's Quirk gradually changing, questioning him on the phenomenon and getting a vague answer.[6] Like with Izuku, Shota is rude to Katsuki due to the latter's brash and violent behavior. He tends to look over Katsuki more than any other student, stemming from his reckless and loud behavior. In the Battle Trial Arc, Shota restrains Katsuki from attacking Izuku. Despite their turbulent start, Shota recognizes Katsuki's talents and defended him during his match with Ochaco in the Sports Festival after Katsuki was admonished for his supposed cruelty in the match. During the Final Exams Arc, he overheard Katsuki's declaration to the class and noted he was getting worse. Shota also paired Katsuki up with Izuku for them to work together and it worked. However, it is shown in the Hideout Raid Arc that he acknowledges he has the qualities of a hero when asked by the press about his "villain like" behavior. Shota correctly states that Katsuki will not become a villain, which was seen when the latter refused to join the League of Villains. When he meets the Bakugo Family, he was complimented for seeing Katsuki for who he really was and not overlooking his faults.[8] During Joint Training Arc, Shota complimented Katsuki's willingness to cooperate with his team, which led to his victory. Shota expressed pride in Katsuki gradually changing his ways while Katsuki told him to not dwell on it.[9] His relationship with Shoto is good. Generally, he does not cause him as many problems as Izuku and Katsuki, although Shota knows that Shoto also has his own issues to overcome. He was in awe at seeing Shoto's power during his battle with Hanta at the Sports Festival. During the practical exam, Shoto was paired with Momo, while Shota was their opponent. During the confrontation, Shota manages to wrap up Shoto. He tells Shoto his plan placed too much of the burden on himself and that he needs to trust Momo more. Shoto follows the advice of his teacher, and together with Momo they manage to defeat him. Days later, during the Hideout Raid Arc, Shoto was one of the five students who skipped the rules to go to rescue Katsuki. This action brought him harsh criticism from Shota who said that, had it not been for All Might's retirement, he would have been expelled along with the other students. In Shie Hassaikai Arc, Shota noticed that Shoto was the only student who chose not to fight Mirio Togata and remarked the latter was calmer after he stated that he didn't get his provisional license. His relationship with Ochaco does not go beyond that of a professor/student. In their first meeting, he scared her with his deadpan nature and she had a hard time thinking he was a hero. Over time, their status has progressed into a positive light. As her teacher, Shota tries to teach Ochaco to be a heroine, not hesitating to criticize her harshly when he sees that her performance is not adequate, as shown when she barely passed her final exam against Thirteen.[13] Likewise, he also tries to encourage and comfort her in difficult times. After Sir Nighteye's death, Ochaco feels guilty because she thought she could have done much more to save him, but Shota consoles her and replies that she bears no responsibility and the fault lies with the heroes, asking her to take time and think about what she wants to do in the future, to which she responds that she wants to save people.[14] Months later, after she saved Izuku during the 5th round of the Joint Training Battle, Shota recognizes that Ochaco has matured and improved a lot since last time.[6] Shota is aware of Minoru's perverted personality, he even does not hesitate to describe him as the "embodiment of lust". Although Shota does not do much to correct this attitude, he does not allow Minoru to cross certain lines of human decency, especially when it comes to peeking on girls while they bathe. For this reason, Shota usually warns other people about Minoru's attitude so that they take the necessary measures in this regard, or he generates an aura of intimidation to make sure that Minoru does not do anything perverted. However, Shota also supports him and gives him confidence when he feels overwhelmed by a challenge, as when Minoru was nervous about the Provisional Hero License Exam. Shota encourages him to do his best so that he can pass the exam and further his goal of becoming a Hero. This both scared and encouraged the young hero to try his best.[15] Shota is aware of Minoru's perverted personality, he even does not hesitate to describe him as the "embodiment of lust". Shota encourages him to do his best so that he can pass the exam and further his goal of becoming a Hero. This both scared and encouraged the young hero to try his best.[15] Sensoji was a student of Class 2-B with whom he did not get along. He had an arrogant personality, and he used to despise Shota by considering him a weakling and having an equally weak Quirk. Although Shota did not usually consider him a smart one, and he generally ignored his provocations, since at that time he was going through a crisis, having serious doubts about his ability to be a hero, he could not deny that there was a certain truth in his words.[24] However, thanks to Oboro's support, Shota improved his combat ability, and at some point during training, between him and Oboro, they managed to defeat Sensoji. Still, Shota did not consider it a fair fight, arguing that a two-on-one is not fair, and tried to have the fight end in good terms between the two, but Sensoji considered his defeat to Shota humiliating and despised his mercy.[26] Despite this enmity, when Shota defeated Garvey alone, Sensoji did not hesitate to congratulate him and acknowledge that he had accomplished an outstanding feat and that he should be proud of it. After this incident, their relationship improved a lot. Sensoji no longer antagonized Shota neither got angry when Shota defeated him in training battle and even thanked him for his advice.[32] Shota has known Ms. Joke for a long time; their workplaces were once close to each other and as a result, whenever there was trouble, they would assist each other. Ms. Joke often states she likes him and enjoys poking fun at him, though he seems to find her jokes and general disposition to be annoying, but still tolerates her presence and shows a willingness to work with her.[33] Ms. Joke is determined to get Shota to laugh using her Quirk, Outburst, or otherwise, however, Shota is always one step ahead before she gets the chance by erasing her Quirk. Eri was unable to control her Quirk after Izuku defeated Overhaul, causing Izuku visible pain. Shota, albeit injured, was brought to the scene so he could erase Eri's out-of-control Quirk. Since then, Shota has been somewhat of a guardian for Eri, sometimes taking charge of her care as she lives with the U.A. faculty in the dorms. Eri is comfortable with Shota's presence and listens to him well.[34] Shota appears to have a soft spot for Eri, having bought her a matching set of cat-themed clothes while she was in the hospital for her to wear when she was discharged. Shota is known to like cats, making this gesture somewhat more meaningful. Shota has been attempting to train Eri to control and use her Rewind Quirk at will but realizes that her horrendous psychological trauma and physical torture at the hands of Overhaul has made the task of teaching her control a very arduous undertaking, but one he continues to stick with. Due to his role as Eri's custodian, Shota has a degree of influence over whom she interacts with, primarily relying on Mirio Togata on assistance with looking out for her. He has grown to have faith in her abilities, as he allowed her to use her Quirk on Mirio, successfully restoring his powers.[22] Shota met the villain Kurogiri at the same time as Tomura Shigaraki. At that time he saw him as one more criminal, a member of the League of Villains. However, he recognized him as one of the most dangerous after he had stopped the class from escaping and trapping them inside the U.S.J. hall.[39] This perspective changed when he and Hizashi are informed that Kurogiri is their former classmate and friend Oboro Shirakumo, or more correctly, his corpse revived and bioengineered by All For One. The idea that the body of Oboro has been desecrated in such a way leaves him feeling agitated, and he hopes that everything is just a big misunderstanding, because when they fought at U.S.J., Kurogiri's behavior was completely different from Oboro's. Due to the Nomu's ability to retain personality traits of their past life, Naomasa and Gran Torino plan to try to wake up Oboro with some attachments he had toward his old life, making Shota and Hizashi personally interview him. The villain does not react to seeing them and does not seem to remember anything when he was Oboro, but his genuine concern for others (in his case Tomura Shigaraki) and the fact that he describes himself as the type of person who cannot abandon others, confirms Shota that he is really his friend Oboro. Saddened to know the truth, and with tears in his eyes, Shota yells to Kurogiri that if Oboro is still in there, the three of them can still be heroes together. His words caused Oboro's visage to emerge and Shota was devastated by his friend's fate.[28][29] Kyudai Garaki Shota holds deep animosity towards Dr. Garaki for his role in the conversion of Oboro's body into the Nomu, Kurogiri. Upon confronting the doctor during the raid at Jaku Hospital, Shota trapped the doctor with his binding cloth and angrily stated how he and All For One had tossed so many people aside, so now it was their turn to take everything away from Kyudai. It's revealed that Kyudai had actually desired Shota's Erasure Quirk instead of Oboro's Cloud Quirk when he took the latter's body.[40]
