Origin The Master Chief, originally named John, was born on March 7 2511 and first lived with his family on the human colony planet Eridanus II. In 2517, John and seventy-four other children his age are covertly taken from their homes and replaced with clones to hide the kidnapping. The original children are brought to planet Reach, one of the UNSC's headquarters, to begin intense physical and psychological training to become SPARTAN-II supersoldiers. They are assigned new identification numbers instead of last names; John becomes known as John-117. Approximately eight years later, John and the other children are biologically and cybernetically augmented and enhanced. These procedures had substantial risks; only John and thirty-two other Spartans survive. When Dr. Halsey and Lieutenant Jacob Keyes visited Eridanus II in 2517 to study him, they were impressed with his intellect and luck. In a final test of his viability as a candidate, he was asked to determine which side an old coin would land on. He watched the coin as it flew in the air and caught it before it could land; correctly stating which side was face-up, on the side of the eagle. After the Spartans' first successful operation which involved capturing a rogue UNSC officer, John-117 is briefed on the threat posed by the Covenant, a theocratic alliance of alien races, and witnesses the utter devastation wrought by a single ship. The Spartans are first sent to the Damascus Materials Testing Facility on the planet Chi Ceti 4 to retrieve the MJOLNIR Mark IV armor. In the process, they board a Covenant vessel and plant a bomb; John is forced to leave one of his fellow Spartans, his best friend, to die. At only 14 years old, it is said that John had a body of an 18-year-old Olympic athlete; the augmentation process gave the Spartans faster reflexes, greater strength, and enhanced eyesight, and made their bones nearly unbreakable. Following their augmentation procedures, John and the other Spartans were transferred to the Atlas in order to recover in a microgravity environment. During his first visit to the Atlas gym, John was confronted by four ODSTs, whose Sergeant then ordered the five of them into the boxing ring. In the ensuing fight, John killed two of the ODSTs, and left the others severely injured. The Mother's sister, Resurrector, wanted vengeance, thus teleported him to Earth to kill him there. But he fought his way to Hell again and defeated her there. Once more, chose to remain in Hell to fend off the demons. Initially stranded in Argent D'Nur, he is captured by the Argenta and undergoes a trial by combat in the Blood Arena. His exceptional skills earn him the admiration of the Argenta, leading to his training in their military. As Argent D'Nur faces invasion by demons, the Marine joins the fight, catching the attention of King Novik and eventually becoming a Night Sentinel, known as the Doom Slayer. The Doom Slayer is awakened by Samuel Hayden during a demonic invasion on Mars led by Olivia Pierce. Directed by Hayden, the Slayer heads to Resource Operations to repair a satellite dish but is hindered from accessing crucial information. Instead, he is guided to a VEGA terminal for an argent cell upgrade. Progressing through the Foundry and Argent Tower, he thwarts Pierce's attempt to open a Hell portal. Despite his efforts, Pierce uses an Argent Accumulator to transport the Slayer to Kadingir Sanctum. In Kadingir Sanctum, the Slayer navigates to his Sarcophagus location to utilize portal equipment from a UAC expedition. Returning to Mars, he finds the facility overrun with demons due to the portal. Hayden instructs him to find the Helix Stone to end the invasion and implants a teleportation program into his suit. The Slayer obtains the BFG 9000, battles a Cyberdemon, and retrieves the Demonic Crucible from the Titan realm. After cutting off the power source on Mars, he heads to the Well, absorbing energy from Wraith bodies to close the portal. At the final battle, Pierce transforms into the Spider Mastermind but is killed by the Slayer. Hayden, aiming to continue Argent energy production, takes the Crucible from the Slayer and teleports him away to an unknown location, anticipating his opposition to the plan. Following the events on Mars, the Doom Slayer returns to Earth, finding it invaded by demons seeking to harvest human souls for Argent Energy. To thwart the invasion, he targets the Hell Priests and clashes with the Khan Maykr. The Slayer eliminates Deag Nilox, confronts Ranak and Grav, and retrieves the Celestial Locator on the Sentinel world of Exultia. Despite warnings from the ghost of King Novik, the Slayer goes to Hell, obtaining a power source from the Betrayer and a dagger to kill his transformed son, the Icon of Sin. With the Celestial Locator, the Slayer defeats Ranak in the UAC Arctic facility and tracks down Grav in Sentinel Prime. Following Hayden's guidance, he retrieves the Crucible and defeats the Marauder. After blowing a hole in Mars, the Slayer reaches Sentinel Prime, kills the Gladiator, and decapitates Grav. However, his actions lead to excommunication from the Night Sentinels. Temporarily trapped on the Fortress by the Khan Maykr, the Slayer restores its power using the demonic Crucible. Guided by Hayden, the Slayer travels to Argent D'Nur, retrieves his Crucible, and forges a new blade. He interrupts the Icon's awakening on the Maykr realm of Urdak, destroying the dimensional barrier between Urdak and Hell. After killing the Khan Maykr, the Slayer returns to Earth, defeats the Icon of Sin, and opens a portal to Urdak. Despite leaving VEGA behind, he kills the Icon using the Crucible. With the Hell Priests, Khan Maykr, and Icon defeated, demons are momentarily defeated.)
