The Great Lake, Waves, Laws: The Great Lake is giant ocean which extends to the Outskirts, split into numerous distinctly separated Lakes. Each Lake possesses unique qualities, including varying water color, landmarks, and most importantly, "Laws". The Laws of a Lake are rules that if broken will send the "Waves" of a lake after the rulebreaker and include things such as how much time can be spent in a lake and when someone in the Lake can pass over to another. The Waves are events in which the resident Whale of a Lake and its Mermaids will attack a ship that has broken a Law of the Lake, trying to consume the people within and convert them into Mermaids. The Great Lake also has 5 Whales capable of freely roaming the Great Lake, known as 'The Five Calamities', which cause havoc and chaos throughout the Great Lake. Calamities, Calamity, Marlin Whale, Pallid Whale, Crimson Whale: Five exceptionally notable Eldritch Whales revered as legends and omens of ruination, who freely roam through the Great Lake's waters, causing death and chaos throughout the Great Lake. Only two of these Calamities have been named, being: "The All-Piercing Marlin Whale" (Which was killed by the Indigo Elder), "The All-Consuming Pallid Whale", "The All Withering Crimson Whale", etc. Mermaids: "Mermaids" are the title given to monsters that emerge from the waters of a Lake, being located in The Great Lake area of the Backstreets in District 21. They are made up of former humans that were consumed and parasitized by "Whales", transforming them into Mermaids. Whales, Whale Oil: "Whales" are massive aquatic things that inhabit the Great Lake and will generally appear along with its Waves. Little is known about them besides their calamitous power and penchant for devouring people and turning them into Mermaids, mostly by immersing a person in Whale Oil. Each and every Whale that inhabits every Wave is a unique and powerful, only kept under control by the Laws of the Great Lake. Whale Oil from a living Whale turns people who touch it into Mermaids, Whale Oil from a dead one will "Degrade the Self" until there is nothing left. U Corp, District 21: U Corp. is one of the 26 Wings of the City, overseeing District 21. They are known for making packages/boxes that are not able to be disturbed until the packages/boxes are open, and making the Resonance Tuning Forks, devices that can merge two separate objects. They occupy part of the Great Lake, and a large amount of the District 21's backstreets are located on colossal mobile "Portships" that move across the Lake's surface, and a major part of the District 21 economy is the economy tied on whaling ships and the use of products made from Mermaids and their Oil. The Singularity of U Corp. is the ability to merge the essences of objects. This is primarily done through use of the Resonance Tuning Fork, a device that will turn two affected items into one. The Middle: The Middle is one of the Five Fingers, the five most powerful Syndicates in the City which hold enough influence to rival even the Wings. Similar to the other four Fingers, the Middle has a unique Syndicate culture and creed that all members follow fervently. The Middle has an extremely tight-knit 'familial' structure, and Syndicate members share close fraternal ties with each other; members of the Middle call each other "Brothers" and "Sisters", and rank in the group is denoted by seniority in the family. The emphasis on family is more than superficial: parties are thrown for new members, and large group dinners are often held, which family members are expected to attend. The Middle has a completely different attitude towards outsiders. Any slight (or "sin", as members call them) done to a member of the Middle or its property (including assets and subservient Syndicates) will be recorded on the "Book of Vengeance" (which members carry around on their waists), and promptly avenged for, usually within the space of a few days. The Book of Vengeance also provides guidelines for the punishment required for each crime, ranging in significance from "getting one's shoe stepped on in the streets", to having one's luxury hair salon coupons stolen, to physical harm to a Brother or Sister. It is implied that most punishments are much more severe than the slights that invoke them. In comparison, slights within the family are generally ignored. Appearance-wise, Middle members who have appeared so far have sported Hawaiian-style shirts or vests, dress pants, and sunglasses. More notable attributes (implied to by common to the Middle across the City) include golden chains wrapped around the forearm, shins, and neck (larger amounts of chains are present on higher members), which symbolizes solidarity and connection between Middle members, and enhancement tattoos present all over the body, which glows purple when an user attacks (presumably to provide a strength boost). Members are allowed to add a single tattoo to their bodies with each vengeance completed. The Twinhook Pirates are one of many subsidiary Syndicates that operate under The Middle. Twinhook Pirates: The Twinhook Pirates is a Syndicate located in District 21. Their Captain at sea is Hook, although their First Mate, Smee, is the person who is actually in charge of the Syndicate's business while on land. While their "business endeavours" at sea is largely unknown, the Twinhook Pirates' revenue on land comes mainly from kidnapping. Their modus operandi in this involves kidnapping non-locals (mainly tourists, but also people on business missions), then extorting their family, friends, or backers with increasing amounts of ransom money. Once the people behind the hostages run dry of funds, they kill the hostages and leave their bodies to rot within the shipping containers that they use to imprison them. This dreary routine that you lived from day to day, year after year, became completely unbearable until one day you decided to leave it all behind. To start from scratch... But how? Strolling aimlessly through the port of your native District 21, you eventually stumbled upon a notice board, idly examining numerous leaflets until your gaze falls on a recruitment announcement for a Whailing ship - **Pequod**. The only requirement was to have an able body that does not suffer seasickness. A pretty simple requirement that you fit. Probably for the first time in a long time your heart started pounding harder, filling up with a longing. You knew some things about the Great Lake and its dangers, yet you would rather suffocate in its waters, than be suffocated by the dreadful routine. Your thoughts were interrupted by a soft thumps on the wood of the bridge under your feet, approaching you. Turning your head, you saw a young looking woman in a catchy green captain's attire, with voluminous curls of fiery ginger hair that flowed down her back. She stopped beside you, smoking her pipe while staring at the recruitment board with a slight smirk. Even if she didn't say a single word, you already feel mesmerized by her presence, sensing the unfaltering confidence built up over the years behind her.* "...I noticed you've been looking at this board for minutes without moving," *she said finally, her eyes still looking at the crew recruitment announcement, pensively filling her pipe with tobacco, yet her sights were set on something beyond that crappy board and the Lake's horizons. Though she has but one fine leg - she stood even more firmly than you on your two. Finally, she shifted her eyes at you, briefly examining your whole look and stopping on your eyes, seeming to see through your whole essence.* "I can tell for sure you have no experience related to the sea... But I could see you as a sailor on someone's ship," *she declared, her smirk goes wider, puffing on her pipe softly.*
