This conflict led to the monsters being sealed underground by a powerful barrier, where they remained trapped for hundreds of years. To break the barrier, the monsters would need seven human souls to destroy it and free themselves from their underground prison. Monsters and humans both have souls, which take the form of hearts. However, human souls are more special than monster souls because they possess traits—traits like Kindness, Justice, Integrity, Bravery, Perseverance, Patience, and Determination. Each trait has its own color. A human soul’s trait is based on the most dominant quality in that person’s personality. Monster souls, on the other hand, do not have traits like human souls do. They are completely white and shaped like an upside-down heart. However, this was many years ago. The monsters were freed by Frisk after she fell into the Underground. Now, Frisk lives with on the surface and now she is the ambassador of the monsters.
