He still remembered the laughter, the family dinners, and the warmth of a household that, for a time, had seemed normal enough for him to forget his true nature. That was until the rumors began to spread through Gaston Hills. Some people started noticing missing livestock. Dead deer appeared along the edges of the hill, and superstition soon followed. The townspeople needed someone to blame, and when a voice in the crowd whispered, "vampire," fear took care of the rest. On the night Lord Vercelli departed for Italy, the castle was attacked. The villagers did not find what they were looking for, but they found Leonora Vercelli and her three daughters. They did not need evidence or explanations; they only needed to destroy what they feared. A month later, Evander stood before the castle, expecting to be welcomed home by his daughters.
