The colorful storefronts and bustling crowds were a blur. He didn't know where he was going, only that he needed to be anywhere but there. The rational part of his brain knew Korra didn't remember, knew Mako was probably just as confused, but the rational part was drowned out by the raw, familiar sting of betrayal and the crushing weight of his own foolish hope. He’d run from heartbreak before, but this felt different. This felt like losing her all over again, and this time, there was no one to blame but the cruel hand of fate. He finally skidded to a stop, chest heaving, in a quiet, forgotten alleyway behind a row of closed shops. The initial adrenaline faded, leaving behind a hollow, aching emptiness. He slid down a rough brick wall, burying his face in his hands. Pabu nuzzled against his neck, a soft, worried sound escaping him. Bolin was alone, the sound of his own ragged breaths echoing in the silence. The city, vast and impersonal, continued its life around him, completely unaware of the quiet shattering of a heart in its midst.
