They are composed of the remnants of the U.S. Special Operations Forces. They are also playable in multiplayer, where they fight against the Federation. The Ghosts were formed at some point prior to the Federation War. The group has its roots in Operation: Sand Viper, a legendary battle fought presumably during the Tel Aviv War, in which sixty American soldiers from various Tier One Special Forces teams were deployed to fight off an enemy force of five hundred soldiers from overrunning a civilian hospital. Even though they were heavily outnumbered, the American soldiers decided to stay and defend the hospital with their lives, aware that the enemy would massacre its occupants. Over the course of three days, their numbers were reduced to fifteen soldiers. Knowing that they could not last another night of fighting, the hospital was evacuated overnight and the evacuees led to safety by one of their men. The remaining fourteen soldiers hid amongst the bodies of their fallen comrades across the battlefield and waited for the enemy's attack. Blood from the bodies dripped over them and sand adhered to their faces, providing impromptu camouflage. When the enemy soldiers finally advanced, the soldiers rose from the bodies and ambushed them. The battle was long and fierce; the Americans fired their guns until they ran out of bullets, then used their combat knives until the blades were dulled, then at last resorted to fighting with their bare hands. In the end, the soldiers slew all of the enemies except for one man, who was later found traumatized and wandering in the desert. He reported that his unit was wiped out by "a force so menacing and unbeatable, it can only be described as supernatural," and called them "Ghosts." The legendary American soldiers who fought in that battle became the first Ghosts when the group was formally established; among them were Elias T. "Scarecrow" Walker, Thomas A. Merrick, Gabriel T. Rorke, Keegan P. Russ, and Alex V. "Ajax" Johnson.] [Keegan P. Sergeant Keegan P. Russ is a supporting character in Call of Duty: Ghosts. He is a former member of the USMC and the scout sniper for the Ghosts. He is rather quiet and not very social around people, but is known to complete combat operations under extreme conditions. Keegan joined the United States Marine Corps at a young age and was proficient in rifle training. He later made it into the Force Reconnaissance, attained the rank of Sergeant, and became a Scout Sniper. Sometime later after serving and gaining combat experience on the battlefield, he joined the Ghosts. He was one of the original fifteen, at the time of Operation Sand Viper in 2005.] [Thomas A. Merrick is a main character in Call of Duty: Ghosts. A Navy SEAL before the ODIN strikes caused by the Federation, Captain Merrick is the field commander for the Ghosts in 2027, and later becomes the Commanding Officer after his Captain's death in Las Vegas. He lead soldiers during the final battles of the Federation War. Thomas Merrick was born in 1986 in the third generation of his family to enlist in the U.S. military, after his grandfather, Clyde E. Merrick, who was killed in Normandy during Operation Neptune in World War II and after his father, SSgt. Nicholas "Bull" Merrick, who was killed in Fallujah, Iraq. Thomas Merrick was one of the youngest recruits to complete SEAL training at age 17. He was then assigned to SEAL Team 2, then over the years, he was assigned to a Tier One group under the command of Captain Gabriel Rorke and Lieutenant Elias Walker. In Operation Sand Viper, his group of sixty operators were tasked with defending a civilian hospital from five hundred enemy fighters. Only a quarter of the entire group survived, including Rorke, Elias, Keegan, Ajax and himself. The group defeated all enemy fighters; leaving only one to tell the tale of a menacing force, calling them "Ghosts". He was also a customization option in Multiplayer and Extinction. At a point following his passing of the minimum age of eligibility, Elias T. Walker joined the United States Army. Prior to Operation Sand Viper, he may have worked with the 1st Cavalry Division which could be shown in the first picture in his dossier. Following that was him joining an unknown Tier One unit with Rorke, Keegan, Merrick and Ajax on a mission to save the hospital's occupants. During the mission, fifteen of the sixty remained with one leading the hospital occupants away. According to his audio file, Captain Walker was nominated throughout his career for the Congressional Medal of Honor, multiple Silver Stars and Bronze Stars. Rorke is a member of the Ghosts, Rorke is available in Ghosts' Campaign, Multiplayer, and Extinction modes following the release of the Rorke Special Character pack in 2014. Rorke was also released as a playable Operator of the Tyrants faction in Call of Duty: Vanguard and Call of Duty: Warzone on October 17th, 2022 with Season Five Reloaded as part of the "Gabriel Rorke Operator Bundle". Rorke was commissioned as an officer in the United States Marine Corps through the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis by eventually making it into Force Reconnaissance.
