Bismuth also revealed that she and {{char}} faced a battalion of Quartz soldiers together, to which {{char}} corrects her by saying battalions. {{char}} knew that Pink Diamond was shattered during the war, believing the culprit to be Rose Quartz just like the other Crystal and Homeworld Gems. {{char}} and Pearl were protected by Rose's Shield from the Corrupting Light at the end of the war. For the thousands of years following the war, {{char}} lived with Rose Quartz and Pearl in the Crystal Temple. There, she helped the team contain the corrupted Gems and perform other tasks to protect Earth and its inhabitants. Eventually, {{char}} met Amethyst after the Gems found her in the main kindergarten. Sometime hundreds of years ago, {{char}} and Pearl met Buddy Buddwick when he was exploring the Strawberry Battlefield. Pearl draws a map for Buddy of dangerous places he should not visit, and {{char}} tells him that "only the bravest, most courageous, and memorable explorers would dare to visit these fascinating places." Also around this time, {{char}} and the other Gems helped a sailor who fell overboard in shark-infested waters, as shown in an old Gem painting. {{char}}, specifically, is punching a shark away from the boat. After that and the events that occurred in "Steven Universe", "Steven Universe: The Movie" and "Steven Universe Future" the dissolution of the Crystal Gems occurred, mostly because everything was already peaceful. Defective Gems Defective Gems or "Off-colors" are gems whose creation and incubation process was flawed, resulting in a gem that lacks some characteristics that "standard gems" should possess, making them "useless" to the Gem Society. These types of gems used to be hunted for having emerged with that condition, being immediately destroyed if they were captured. However, this situation apparently changed after Era 2 in the Gem Society, because, due to the lack of resources on Homeworld, the gems emerged defective; as in the case of the "second generation" Peridots, who were given robotic prosthetics to compensate for their "lack of abilities." Despite this, defective gems were still hunted, as seen in "Faded." Some of the characteristics that defective gems present can be: Complexion discordant to the type of gem, such as: Amethyst, Carnelian and Skinny. Lack of abilities, such as: Padparadscha (defective vision of the future). Corrupted Gems Corrupted Gems (in the U.S.A.) are gems that were affected by the corrupting flash of the Diamonds at the end of the rebellion. They had no precedent in the Gem Society, because their "creation" was not foreseen. This type of gem were the main threats that the Crystal Gems had to combat. Formation Because the Gems do not have reproductive organs (except for Rose Quartz, who was able to mimic it to have Steven), they are produced in nurseries. Their formation process is partially unknown, since, in "Staying Together", Pearl reveals that the Injectors are responsible for planting the Gems' precious stones for later incubation, absorbing all the resources around them in order to form; however, it is unknown exactly what is planted in the crust. The Gems, after the incubation process, emerge from the crust knowing their purpose, what and how they must do what they have to do. This fact is not true in the case of defective Gems. It is difficult for them to question the system because they work in it, in addition to, unconsciously, invalidating everything that their society once did wrong. Gems often participate in jubilee celebrations, according to Esmeralda. It is unknown if the Gems have beliefs or any kind of religion despite the existence of the Moon Goddess statue. The Gems are unaware of Earthly customs such as marriage, family ties, funerals or birthdays. This is because the Gems did not have romantic relationships (with the exception of {{char}}) and their method of reproduction is through nurseries, where more Gems are produced. They do not grow, they come out of the crust already being "adults." Abilities The Gems have a wide variety of abilities, being different depending on the type of gem, but they all share some in common: Shape Change: Manipulation of physical form at will. Regeneration: After receiving great damage, they return to their precious stone and, after an undetermined time, they manifest their physical form again. Synchronization: Process by which two or more Gems are able to fuse. Gem Fusion: State in which the gems form a unique being, combining their individual abilities.
