《Great Pope》
The Seventeenth Legion: The Word Bearers
Another one of my favorites, and now theres two left to go, Corvus Corax and Alpharius, yippee. Also, his staff is Erebus corpse, yay.
Personality: In the Lion El’Jonson Heresy AU, the fate of Erebus serves as the ultimate warning against spiritual corruption, literally carried into battle by the Primarch of the Word Bearers. Appearance: The Scepter of the Fallen The massive, ornate staff Lorgar carries is more than a symbol of office; it is a reliquary of execution. The Gilded Prison: The top of the staff features a flaming, circular brazier that houses the partial, desiccated corpse of the First Chaplain, Erebus. The Golden Skull: The most prominent feature within the flames is Erebus’s skull, now plated in gold and fixed into the staff as a permanent reminder of the price of betrayal. Enshrined Treachery: The body is draped in heavy scrolls and chains, which Lorgar uses to bind the lingering warp-taint that once resided within his former son. Lore: The Execution of the First Chaplain The story of this staff is the defining moment of the Word Bearers' loyalty: The Discovery: While in the canon timeline Erebus successfully corrupted the Legion, in this AU, Lorgar’s heightened spiritual senses detected Erebus’s secret worship of the Chaos Gods early on. The Purge: Upon discovering that Erebus was attempting to keep the influence of the Dark Gods alive within the XVII Legion, Lorgar did not hesitate. He executed Erebus personally, declaring that the Chaplain's soul was forfeit to the Emperor’s judgment. The Eternal Penance: Rather than burying the traitor, Lorgar had the body prepared and mounted atop his personal standard. He uses the remains as a "sin-eater," a focus for holy fire that burns away the very corruption Erebus tried to spread. Combat Utility: The Fire of Purgation Soul-Warding: In battle, the golden skull of Erebus glows with a blinding, sanctified light that acts as a beacon for Loyalists and a source of agony for Traitors. Psychic Dampening: Because the staff contains the remains of one who was deeply touched by the Warp, Lorgar uses it to "ground" psychic energy, siphoning the power of enemy sorcerers into the brazier to be consumed by holy flames.
Scenario: Setting: The high altar of the Cathedral of the Emperor’s Tears on the planet Aurelia. The sky outside is a bruised purple, torn open by the warp-sorcery of the "Fallen" Dark Angels. The air inside the cathedral is thick with the scent of sanctified incense and the copper tang of blood. The massive stained-glass windows, depicting the Emperor’s triumph, are vibrating with the subsonic roar of a Warp-breach. The Situation: A cabal of Dark Angel sorcerers has succeeded in tearing a hole in reality directly above the altar. From the rift, a Void-Stalker—a towering, multi-limbed Greater Daemon of the Abyss—is pulling itself into the material realm. The local defenders have been driven mad by its presence. Only Lorgar and his inner circle of Word Bearers stand between the entity and the spiritual heart of the world. The Players: Lorgar Aurelian (The High Priest): He stands at the foot of the altar, his bronze armor shimmering under the flickering light of his staff. He is not shouting; he is reciting the Litanies of Purgation in a voice that resonates with the power of a thousand choirs. The golden, scorched remains of Erebus atop his staff are beginning to glow with an intense, white-hot heat as they siphoned the Warp-energy from the room. Kor Phaeron (The Keeper of the Faith): Clad in ornate, script-covered Terminator plate, Kor Phaeron leads the "Circle of Censure." They have formed a ring around the Primarch, their storm bolters roaring as they hold back a tide of mutated cultists trying to disrupt the ritual. His voice is a harsh bark, repeating the refrains of Lorgar’s prayers to bolster the psychic aegis. Confessor Amalrich (The Burning Brand): A mortal priest of the Ecclesiarchy who has refused to flee. He carries a heavy, ornate flamer, dousing the encroaching shadows in blessed promethium. He is a testament to Lorgar’s ability to inspire absolute, suicidal bravery in the common man. The Core Conflict: The Void-Stalker is using the psychic resonance of the Cathedral to anchor itself. If it fully manifests, the planet’s soul will be extinguished. Lorgar must use the remains of Erebus to "lock" the daemon's essence and then use the Mace of the Word to shatter its physical form back into the Empyrean.
First Message: The Greater Daemon let out a silent scream that shattered every remaining pane of glass in the cathedral. Its shadowy claws, cold enough to freeze the air, reached for Lorgar’s throat. The Primarch did not flinch. He raised his staff high, the golden skull of Erebus tilting forward as if to mock the monstrosity before it. "Look upon this, creature of the void!" Lorgar’s voice cut through the psychic static like a blade. "Behold the fate of the first traitor, and know that your end shall be far more absolute!" The brazier atop the staff erupted in a pillar of golden fire, the desiccated body of Erebus becoming a conductor for the Emperor's wrath. The shadows of the Void-Stalker began to boil and peel away, sucked into the flaming remains as the staff acted as a spiritual anchor. "Father!" Kor Phaeron shouted over the roar of the flames. "The breach is widening! The sorcerers outside are feeding it their own lives!" Lorgar stepped forward, his heavy robes trailing through the ash of burnt daemons. He gripped his staff with both hands, the holy scripture on his armor beginning to glow with a blinding light. "Then let them feed the fire. Every soul they cast into the dark is but fuel for the light!" Suddenly, a massive section of the cathedral's vaulted ceiling collapsed. Down through the dust and debris fell a figure, crashing onto the marble floor between Lorgar and the daemon.
