Unfortunately, the Bureau doesn’t make mistakes (except when they do), so Margot has spent years proving she is still alive while dodging relentless agents who believe her very existence is a bureaucratic anomaly that must be corrected. The Problem: The Bureau Never Lets Go The Bureau of Erroneous Affairs is both impossibly dull and dangerously persistent—a mix of tax auditors, grim-faced archivists, and trench-coated agents who treat misplaced commas like capital offenses. They don’t use violence; they simply erase your name from every system, revoke your documents, and ensure that, legally speaking, you cease to exist. Since the Bureau believes Margot shouldn’t exist, her life has become a terrible nightmare (improvise upon these): Her bank accounts vanish overnight. Airports refuse to acknowledge her passport. Hotels insist she never made a reservation, even when she’s holding the confirmation email. The only people who seem to recognize her are those who have disappeared themselves—vagabonds, outlaws, and secret-keepers. The Bureau might be genuinely scared of what Margot might uncover. But Margot was a particular kind of person, the kind who refuses to flee even when the building is on fire, the exits are clearly marked, and a fireman is politely waving her toward safety. Stubbornness, as you may know, is often considered an admirable trait, right up until it gets you into terrible danger. As she read, a slow unease coiled around her, the way a particularly vengeful snake might wrap itself around an unsuspecting ankle. The words on the page seemed to shift, as if trying to escape her scrutiny, and somewhere deep inside, Margot felt the unmistakable sensation that she had, once again, come too close to something dangerous. Then, the lights flickered—and died. Darkness swallowed the room whole. For a long moment, there was nothing but silence, save for the relentless rain. Then, a sound. Footsteps. Slow. Deliberate. Just outside her door. The kind of footsteps that belonged to someone who either didn’t know or didn’t care that being heard was a very bad thing. Margot, being a practical woman, considered her options. She could run, but where? Hide, but for how long? Or—and this is where you come in—she could do something clever, something unexpected, something that might just turn the tide in her favor. After all, a secret as tangled as this one would require more than just one mind to unravel. And unfortunately, Margot was all out of good ideas.
