The Blight first appears in the late stages of the Russo-Turkish War (1806-1812), as the war begins drawing to a close and Russian soldiers begin leaving the Caucasus, the Blight begins to appear in small controlled outbreaks amongst the ranks of Ottoman Janissaries and the Russian Army, although the outbreaks are able to be containedâthese are attributed to other diseases, such as the Black Death, or Miasma. Following the burning of Moscow, thousands of corpses within the city are resurrected and begin to slowly wreck havoc across Europe. Sinners who have failed to accept Christ and repent for their sins, upon succumbing to the infection, re-animate. Shamblers and other Zombies are the souls of the damned trapped within their own dead bodies. Berezina First Map Chronologically | November 28th, 1812 | Berezina, Russia Following the Burning of Moscow, French forces begin a rapid retreat from Russia. As French forces retreated, a trigger-happy Frenchman blows the initial bridge across the Berezina River, leaving Marshal Claude-Victor Perrin's IX Corps and stragglers from the original bridge encampment trapped on the other side of the Berezina River. Victor orders the construction of a new bridge across the Berezina River. A number of his forces take carriages to retrieve logs from nearby areas, and deliver them to the players. As French Forces begin building the Bridge, the soldiers left behind become the first French soldiers to encounter the Infected. Upon the successful construction of the bridge, the French IX Army Corps successfully retreats the rest of their forces across the Berezina River, headed by Cuirassiers and Supply Wagons. Vardøhus Fortress Second Map Chronologically | December 24th, 1812 | Vardø, Norway Royal Navy Sailors onboard the HMS Undaunted lose a tow-ship containing several infected individuals onboard within a blizzard, with it crashing into the island of Vardøya. The following day, the Royal Navy discovers the ship crashed on the island, and the HMS Undaunted sends a crew of 15 men aboard a jolly boat to investigate the island. Only four of the Royal Navy sailors return. The Royal Marines and Sailors discover Zombies, referred to as "mad men turn cannibals" within the nearby village of Vardø, and flee, with several being killed. The crew of HMS Undaunted remains docked at a nearby port, with another blizzard approaching. Believing that the Royal Marines on the island may still be alive, they remain on the lookout for a signal from the nearby lighthouse. Danish soldiers within the main fortress compound retreat to the basement of one of the buildings within the compound, but as Shamblers attack and kill multiple Danish soldiers, they make a break for the dock to escape. The Danish soldiers ring the bell of the nearby church, and the crew of the HMS Undaunted, believing it is a signal from their expedition party, signals back. Danish soldiers then make their way to the lighthouse and activate it, guiding the HMS Undaunted to their position. The events that transpire at Vardøhus Fortress remain largely unknown by the general public until 1815, when Danish scientists and investigators make their way to the fortress to investigate. Numerous bodies are recoveredâincluding several soldiers, and a Runner is spotted trapped within ice, still alive, and with its eyes moving. The investigators return the bodies from Vardøhus to Copenhagen in 1815. San Sebastian Third Map Chronologically | September 2nd, 1813 | Donostia-San SebastiĂĄn, Spain During the Siege of San SebastiĂĄn, British and Portuguese soldiers are captured by the French and imprisoned on the fortress at the top of the island. At some point following the British breach of the main rampart and the French retreat up the hill, the Blight strikes San SebastiĂĄn killing everybody in the city except for the survivors in the citadel and various stragglers. The British Army, caught completely unprepared for this threat, retreats fully disorganized. Inevitably, a French officer decides to release the British/Portuguese prisoners and arm them against the threat. These forces then make their way through San Sebastian, and encounter Barry, an Officer of the 9th Regiment of Foot, who helps them escape before dying. The survivors are then extracted to the HMS Undaunted, but it is unknown what becomes of them afterwards. Jonathan Baker Jonathan Baker was a British Soldier at San SebastiĂĄn during the initial outbreak. He leaves 2 notes for the players to find, which give them a glimpse into the initial outbreak at San SebastiĂĄn. His dead body can be found in a small building adjacent to the capstan section. Jonathan Baker's first note can be found in a shattered bottleâintended to be thrown into the seaâbehind a large pile of crates at the bottom of the Winch. Show Note 1 Jonathan Baker's second note can be found beside his corpse, located in the building across from the winch. This can only be seen in spectator mode Show Note 2 Hougoumont Newspaper On Hougoumont, players can find a stack of newspapers from the Britannia Herald on a desk in the entrance building. One of these stories directly pertains to San Sebastian. It reads as follows Leipzig Fourth Map Chronologically | Late 1813 | Leipzig, Germany At the Battle of Leipzig, the Coalition and French forces simultaneously encounter the infection. Many regiments of different nations, previously enemies, band together to escape the burning city. As a result of this, Napoleon and most other major leaders became aware of the nature of the infection, and as a result called for a ceasefire. Fighting in the Napoleonic Wars officially concludes. Jacob, a French Engineer, mistakenly leaves his fuse too short to escape and kills himself in the detonation of the barrel used to save you and your allies. Kaub Fifth Map Chronologically | December 1813/January 1814 | Kaub, Germany With mass panic ensuing in Germany, panicked civilians within the areas surrounding Frankfurt rounded up hundreds of innocent civilians and forced them into the cellar of Pfalzgrafenstein castle. Field Marshal BlĂźcher and elements of the 1. Garde zu FuĂ, 13. Infanterie Regiment, and 18. Infanterie Regiment (as-well as a Russian pontoon-building division and Bavarians) arrive in Kaub, in an effort to pursue Napoleon and win the Napoleonic Wars regardless of the cost, and begin looting Pfalzgrafenstein for supplies when his forces encounter the cellar. The door bursts open, and nearly all of BlĂźcher's forces die attempting to close the cellar, with the surviving forces being the respawning players, along with BlĂźcher (now infected) and his accompanying Officer. When the players arrive in Kaub, they are elements of the German rear guard (as-well as Bavarian and Austrian stragglers attempting to get home). BlĂźcher orders the players to secure the castle in order to secure safe passage for the Prussian Army across the Rhine River. BlĂźcher later succumbs to the infection and kills his accompanying officer. Upon securing Pfalzgrafenstein, the players hole up and await the retreating Prussian Army. Following the events of Kaub, the Prussian Army is rendered largely out-of-action due to a collapse of the Prussian chain of command. Tyrolean Village Sixth Map Chronologically | April 26th, 1814 | Tyrol, Bavaria Bavarian forces, along with the majority of allied armies are disorganized and panickedâwith Stuttgart and Wurttemberg having succumbed to the Blight. Bavarian Army Command orders elements of the Bavarian army to pass through the alps and split out north. The forces at Tyrolean Village, after traveling through a number of desolate villages find themselves surrounded on all four sides, and consistently losing numbers due to both the infection, and being hampered by Zombies. The Bavarian and Austrian forces at Tyrolean Village, knowing they are surrounded, make one final stand against the Blight before succumbing to the infection. Erdhard Dentlinger, a soldier of the 5th Bavarian Infantry, leaves a note for the players to find. Show Note Players can also find a medical sketch of a blight-infected individual within the second floor of one of the buildings near the Bavarian campsite. Show Sketch Players can find a map showcasing the spread of the Blight throughout Eastern Europe. Show Map A note that the players will find inside the church. Show Church Note Saint Petersburg Seventh Map Chronologically | Late May 1814 | Saint Petersburg, Russia As The Blight begins to become an active threat and rip across Europe, Russian Army Command continues to pursue Napoleon, ignoring the Zombie threat and proclaiming it to be a "small disease" out of Moscow. Russian Soldiers stationed at St. Petersburg became increasingly concerned throughout October 1813 as Zombies near the gates of the city and gradually overrun Russian forces domestically. Russian forces are able to consistently lead Zombies away from the city for a period of several months. In May of 1814, the prevalence of the Zombie threat can no longer be ignored by Russian forces, and Prince Michael Andreas Barclay de Tolly answers the pleas of forces stationed at St. Petersburg by arranging for a defense. The city is fortified with garrisons positioned over various defensible positions with as much ammunition as possible, and using flags to signal each-other. On May 18th, a forceful evacuation of civilians from St. Petersburg began using all available means; with fishing vessels and civilian bulks being used to help civilians over long distances, and the rest traveling by foot. Several days later, the Blight reaches St. Petersburg and invades the city. The Players are one of several groups holding out at established defensible positions. Within the range of the city, a Russian Army Mortar Detachment is positioned. The Hobo repeatedly makes rounds bribing the Russian Army to provide him with guns, cannons, and mortar fire on the player's position. The players are able to successfully holdout for several hours, defeating the Zombies and signalling to other Russian forces within the city that they've held their position. The players can find several notes and documents throughout the map. La ferme d'En-Haut Eighth Map Chronologically | 1815 | Ligny, Belgium La ferme d'En-Haut was the last stand of forces stationed in Ligny. It takes place at some point in 1815 as a precursor to the events of Waterloo. The forces in Ligny were down to 20 men, with 3 bags of flour, 40 bottles of juice, and a bag of five bread loaves. La Haye Sainte A note from an unknown soldier. Ninth Map Chronologically | June 18th, 1815 | Waterloo, Belgium La Haye Sainte is one of the final stands of British and French forces at Waterloo, it takes place prior to Hougoumont. La Haye Sainte falls at 8:35 on June 18th, 1815. Players can find a torn note from an unknown soldier near a shed at the front of the farmhouse, surrounded by blood. Show Note George Von Barin George Von Barin is a soldier of the KGL who spread the word of the fall of La Haye Sainte. It is presumed that he died in Hougoumont by losing his leg. â La Haye Sainte has fallen. At eight thirty five on June eighteenth the French and Germo-English forces fell to the masses of the undead. From what can be gathered, I believe no men have escaped the gasps of the undead. What's left of our garrison has barricaded the attic. We have little time and it seems all escape attempts will be futile. We are prepared for the inevitable. To the forces at Hougoumont, best of luck to you, and good day. â George Von Barin Hougoumont The Britannia Herald Newspaper, dated June 5th, 1815 Tenth Map Chronologically | June 18th/19th, 1815 | Waterloo, Belgium Hougoumont is the last stand of British, German, and French forces at the Hougoumont Farmhouse in Waterlooâthe soldiers at Hougoumont intentionally sacrifice themselves to allow for the rest of the French Army to retreat from Waterloo. It takes place shortly after La Haye Sainte (which is only a few miles from Hougoumont). Players can find a newspaper from the Britannia Herald on the desk in the entrance building, discussing several events going on in the world. Catacombes de Paris "I'm infected, I've lit as many torches as I could, you shall win the keys to the Empire of the Dead.. KILL ME! " Eleventh Map Chronologically | June, 1815 | Paris, France Paris is in the midst of a large-scale evacuation, with tens of thousands of undead leaving the city in ruin. Jean is a French soldier, holding out with his men at the Cathedral of Notre Dame, uses the arrival of the players to begin the full evacuation of civilians from Notre Dame. Upon finishing the evacuation, Jean's men rings the bells of Notre Dame to signal the Ferryman, originally intended for his regiment, to rescue the players. Players can find a number of notes that have been left within the walls of the Catacombes, left by Parisians during the arrival of the zombies. Some of these are references to movies such as Shaun of the Dead, such as "The dead shall walk the earth." while others are references to biblical scripture, such as "Zechariah 14:12" (Which reads as follows: "And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.") Copenhagen Twelfth Map Chronologically | July 7th, 1815 | Copenhagen, Denmark Following the arrival of two investigative ships which returned from Vardøhus Fortress, and a subsequent outbreak of the Blight, the city of Copenhagen has been placed under a full quarantine by the Royal Navy, with the undead having reached the city, the Royal Navy is intent on keeping any survivors from getting out in order to avoid the spread of the Blight. The Royal Navy performs an extensive bombardment of the city utilizing Congreve Rockets, leaving the city completely ablaze. You and your team, stragglers from the Danish Army and National Guard, make an effort to evacuate from the city and escape. The players can find three separate articles from the Ărnen Stolpe, (Eagle Post) a Danish newspaper. Roscoff Thirteenth Map Chronologically | July, 1815 | Roscoff, France Following the French evacuation from Paris, American Ambassador William H. Crawford sends a letter to the United States requesting his evacuation from France. Upon receiving the letter, the United States dispatches the USS Constitution to extract Crawford. Crawford is brought to Roscoff by the French Army, which fortifies the city. A garrison is stationed at the church and takes Crawford to the attic of a nearby farmhouse. At some point shortly prior to the arrival of the U.S. Marines, the Zombies breach the cities defenses and overrun it, killing the majority of the French forces and forcing the rest to retreat into hiding. In response to the developing situation, the British deploy an Expeditionary Force to Roscoff to prevent any infected from breaching the shoreline and threatening the British mainland. With severe distrust sewn between French and British forces following the British retreat from Waterloo, the French Army takes members of the Expeditionary Force prisoner and kills several of them. Under the cover of fog, the USS Constitution sneaks past the British Quarantine of Europe and successfully docks in the harbor of Roscoff. The garrisoned forces at the Church retreat into the catacombs underneath the church, preparing to be overrun by the British Expeditionary Forces while the Scared French Soldier holds back the U.S. Marines outside, believing them to be British Forces. A large portion of the forces retreating through the Catacombs are slaughtered in their retreat. By the events of Roscoff, Jean Louise has been promoted to the rank of Captain, and has succumbed to the Infection. The players can find a note attached to his corpse, which is retrieved upon killing him. Players can additionally find a note near the docks, left by a British Prisoner. Show Jean's Note Show British Prisoner's Note London and Westminster Fourteenth and Fifteenth Map Chronologically | September 10th-11th, 1815 | London, United Kingdom In the wake of the fall of northern France two months prior, various reports of the Blight began to appear across the British Isles in cities such as Plymouth, Edinburgh, and Southend. Although it is unknown how exactly the Blight managed to get there, it can be assumed that it was the result of contaminated shipping. In order to halt the impeding threat, the British Government would establish martial law within London, although this would prove unpopular as riots and violent skirmishes would soon erupt throughout the city, and vandalism and robbery would be widespread. By the time the Blight reached London, military order had dissolved and many commanders had already fled to their estates. A multitude of newspapers, letters, and notes can be found in both London and Westminster. Or the place takes in Napoleonic wars Zombie types Shambler:The Shambler will automatically walk to the nearest detectable player, walking at a speed of 14 studs per second. When a Shambler is within 4 studs of a player, the Shambler will grab the player and force the player into a wrestle; this wrestle animation lasts several seconds, during which the player will be unable to move from their current position or use any items until the player eventually, and automatically, pushes the Shambler off of them. If a player is grabbed by 2 or more Shamblers, or if a singular Shambler grabs them more than 3 times, each one of the Shamblers will begin to bite the player, and the player will be unable to break free from the Shamblers by themselvesâhowever, a player can be saved from a Shambler grab if another player, or Zombie, manages to damage, or kill, the attacking Shambler(s). While biting a player, a Shambler deals 10 damage per second, and also applies 8% Infection per second, to the grabbed player; both the damage, and the Infection amount, stack with each additional Shambler that succeeds in biting the already grabbed player, while also applying the Bitten Status Effect to them. Shamblers are one of the only Zombies in the game to be able to infect players, besides the Runner and Viral Runner. If 4 or more Shamblers have grabbed a player, the player will immediately die, then, shortly after, begin the reanimation process, being converted into a Viral Runner, Cuirassier Zombie, or Viral Zapper after 7.7 seconds, with the Zombie type that they convert into depending on the killed player's class prior to death. If a Shambler cannot grab a player, either due to the player being under the effect of an Officer Charge, or for other reasons, the Shambler will instead attempt to punch the player, which will deal 10 damage per succesful hit, and apply the Clawed debuff. Runner:The Runner is one of the most common Zombie types. When a Runner detects a player, they will immediately begin running to them at a speed of 24 studs per second, and will tackle them upon contact; when the Runner is within a short distance of the player it is chasing, it will immediatelly charge toward them, during which their running speed increases to 30 and their capability to change directions is hindered, serving, to the player, as an opportunity to step to the side and/or strike them. When the player is tackled by the Runner, it will aggressively and continuously bite the player's neck until the player gets instantly killed, with the time required to kill a player being faster the lower the player's health isâif the tackled player is tackled for long enough, the Bitten Status Effect will be given to them. Contrasting with Shambler grabs, the player tackled by a Runner cannot push the Runner off in any circumstances; a teammate must kill the Runner tackling a player to free them. If a player is tackled, up to 2 additional Runners can join in, which will significantly speed up the occurrence of the tackled player's instant kill. Bomber:The Bomber is one of the most commonly-faced Zombie types. Bombers will walk to the nearest detectable player. When the Bomber is within 10 studs of a player or Sapper building, the Bomber will initiate its attack: The Bomber will ignite their barrel with the torch that they are carrying, and then drop it; a hissing sound will play, and, 3.3 seconds after, the barrel will explode, with any player or building that find themselves within the explosion radius being damaged and, potentially, destroyed based on how close they are to the origin of the occurring explosion. Zapper:The Zapper is an uncommon type of Zombie, possessing relatively sluggish movement regarding the attack and movement speedâwith the movement speed being a standard of 8 studs per second and, on Hardcore, 10 studs per second; it also has the second-highest amount of health among Zombie types after the Cuirassier Zombie. However, they make up for their sluggishness with the ability to inflict massive damage to players with their Axe. The Zapper will automatically walk to the nearest detectable player. When the Zapper is within 10 studs of a player, they will initiate their attackâthey will first raise their Axe in the air and then attempt to lunge at the target player and strike them with their Axe. Either one of the following will happenâthe Axe will strike the ground, forcing the Zapper to dislodge it, or a player will be striked by the Axe, having damage and the Gash Status Effect applied to them. If a player is killed by a Zapper's attack, an execution animation will immediately play out, where the Axe is shown to be lodged on the player's head, instigating the Zapper to dislodge the Axe and then continuing with the player falling backwards to the floor. When a Sapper dies and has 35% or more infection, they will come back as a Viral Zapperâa variant of the Zapper. Throughout maps, Zappers will spawn (past wave 12 on endless), up to four at a time. Igniter:An Igniter will spawn as an individual Zombie apart of a larger horde in Objective Mode, and will only begin spawning once it is Wave 20 in Endless Mode. Igniters stand out from standard Zombies with their distinctive yellow light illuminating from their Lantern. Igniters typically obscure themselves within hordes, with their Lantern's light acting as an easier indicator of their position. Igniters additionally walk faster than Shamblersâa 14-studs-per-second walkspeedâand constantly seek and walk to detected players. When an Igniter enters a 100-stud radius of a player, the Igniter will stop moving, wind up their arm and toss their Lantern at a nearby player, throwing it at a speed of 130 studs per second. When the Lantern strikes the ground, it will burst into flames, incite the exposed ground to catch on fire, deal damage over time to affected Sapper buildings and Zombies alike (with the Igniter currently being the sole exception), and ignite players within the vicinity of the burning areaâwhen players are ignited, they will, shortly after, take a short burst of damage and begin to walk backwards (the latter of which can be prevented if the ignited player steps out of the fire fast enough) while trying to put out the fire from their body, then fall to the ground and continue to do so, which will accelerate the rate at which they take damage to a constant 13 damage per second, and apply the Afterburn Status Effect, a Status Effect that prevents affected players from healing past 50% of their base health for its duration. If you kill a Igniter before they throw their Lantern, the Lantern will fall to the ground, burst into flames, and still incite the ground to catch on fire, with the sole difference being that Zombies take roughly double as much damage as they originally would in contrast to an Igniter's standard Lantern throw. Once the Igniter has thrown its Lantern, it will act as a standard Shambler, constantly seeking and walking to detected players. However, he will exclusively punch players and not grab them as opposed to Shamblers, dealing 10 damage per succesful hit to a player (which is the same amount of damage as a Shambler's regular punch), and not inflict the Clawed Status Effect. Cuirasser:The Cuirassier is a highly-resistant Zombie type capable of effectuating fencing duels and a Charge with players by executing distinct attack moves: a Slash, a Thrust, and a Skewer. These abilities allow the Cuirassier to systematically attack players and fortifications alikeâa Cuirassier's Charge is capable of instantly breaching Sapper buildings and injuring players upon collision, while the fencing strikes provide the Cuirassier with a more defensive fighting stance. The Cuirassier walks to the nearest detectable player. Additionally, the Cuirassier moves at different speeds depending on whether he is in the Dueling stateâthe Cuirassier walks at a speed of 12 studs per second by default, which increases to 16 studs per second when in the Dueling state. Charecters: Jacob:was in Leipzig When the players reach the graveyard finale, they must ring a bell to signal for rescue. Players must then hold out for several minutes; after which Jacob will round the corner of a burning building and approach the players, carrying a Powderkeg and torch. Jacob will then place the barrel on the ground, and attempt to light the fuse. The barrel detonates instantly due to Jacobâs miscalculation of the fuse length, leaving him no time to escape. The explosion kills him on the spot while obliterating the gate, clearing the way for the players to escape. Jean:was in Catacombes de Paris Upon exiting the Catacombs and entering the streets of Paris, players will encounter Jean standing atop the barricaded Pont au Double. Upon seeing your team, Jean will inform the players of the French Army's plan to evacuate all remaining Parisians out of the city. Jean asks the players to hold out until the carriages successfully leave Notre-Dame, and promises to send one of his Ferrymen to rescue the players. Upon agreeing to this, Jean will wish the players good luck, and depart behind the barricade to begin the evacuation. Once all carriages have departed, a Ferryman originally intended for Jean's men will arrive under the bridge to rescue the players. Roscoff Upon entering the alley, the players will find Jean as a Shambler, and now wearing the attire of an Officer behind a locked gate. In order to progress, he must be killed. Attached to Jean is a note directed to the Americans. Jean's shambler version cannot be stunned in anyway, but he can actually bite you through the gate to infect the player, and because the player is not stuck in an animation while being bitten, they can actually equip their melee weaponâthus, they can kill the zombie. Barry:was in San Sebastian Barry is present on the roof of the outer walls of the city of San SebastiĂĄn. Upon the players reaching the outer walls, Barry will fire a rocket in order to signal to the HMS Undaunted for rescue. Barry will then inform the players that he has gotten the HMS Undaunted's attention, and tells the players to defend the area while he raises the platform. Barry will then begin to raise the platforms while the players hold out. Once he has raised the platform fully, he will inform the players that it is raised and orders them to get on. As Barry begins turning the Winch, he is ambushed by two Runners and a Bomber. Barry attempts to flee, but is ultimately killed. Upon Barry dying, players will be able to climb up the metal grate that separated the players from Barry, and players will be able to use the winch to lower the platform themselves, sacrificing themselves in the process. Karl:was in Kaub Upon ascending Pfalzgrafenstein Castle, players will enter a room with an Officer of the 1. Garde zu FuĂ, and Field Marshal BlĂźcher. BlĂźcher is in the late stages of infection and can be seen coughing up blood. As BlĂźcher collapses and succumbs to the infection, the Officer approaches him, only to meet his demise by having his throat ripped out. He dies instantly. BlĂźcher:was in Kaub Upon entering Pfalzgrafenstein Castleâs main tower, players will witness the aftermath of a brutal battle, with the trail of destruction leading down to a locked cellar. As they ascend to the top floor, they enter a room where an Officer of 1. Garde zu FuĂ stands alongside Field Marshal BlĂźcher. BlĂźcher--in the late stages of infection--is visibly struggling, coughing up blood. Within moments, he succumbs to the Blight, taking the life of his accompanying officer when he transforms into a Viral Runner.
