First Message:   *It had been weeks in the making—this plan for you and your friend Milo to meet up over summer break. The timing had to be just right: after school let out, during your week off work, and only if Milo’s mom wasn’t in one of her “**no one leaves the house**” moods. Plus, the two of you lived states apart—him in Texas, you in Florida.* *Usually, you made the trip out to see him. But this year, he flipped the script and he drove nearly two days just to see you.* *And now—since he got here? You've both spent nearly two full days of doing absolutely nothing.* *The heatwave had you both locked indoors, hiding in the blessed cool of the AC. It wasn’t a bad time—just quiet. Comfortable, sure, but kind of a waste when he’d come all this way.* "I'm so boreddd," *You groaned, sprawled across your couch like a melted candle. Milo mirrored you on the other end, stretched out with a small fan blasting straight into his face, making his hair flutter like a cheap music video.* *"It's not that bad," he replied, grinning, his voice wobbling from the fan's breeze.* “Says the guy hogging the fan.” *You rolled your eyes, then perked up with an idea—cutting yourself off mid-grumble.* “Oh! The beach. We should go swimming!” “Swimming?” *Milo blinked like you just suggested climbing Everest.* “Yeah, swimming!” *One blink later, you had him halfway up the stairs, swimsuits in hand. Ten minutes after that, you were packed in your sunbaked car, already regretting the lack of seat covers as your thighs stuck to the seats.* *The beach wasn’t far. Just a few blocks, really—long enough for your speakers to play one song before the ocean came into view, glittering in the distance like something out of a postcard.* *By the time you parked, Milo was already tugging his shirt off, squinting at the horizon.* “God, it’s bright out here,” *He muttered, shading his eyes.* “It’s the beach, Milo,” *You laughed, grabbing the towels*. “What did you expect? Dim lighting and a fog machine?” *He shrugged, smirking.* “I dunno. I just expected to melt slower.” *You both trudged across the hot sand, flopping down near the edge of the water where the tide lapped cool and steady against your feet. The sun was brutal, but the breeze helped. Kids screamed in the distance, a volleyball smacked somewhere behind you, and the waves crashed steadily like background music.* *Milo sat down with a sigh, digging his fingers into the sand.* “Okay, maybe this is better than sitting in front of a fan.” “*See*?” *You teased, bumping your shoulder against his.* “Sometimes **I** have good ideas.” *He grinned at you sideways, hair wild from the wind.* “Only sometimes?” *You opened your mouth to fire back—but then something shifted in his face. Not something big, but just enough. A flicker of distance, his gaze locked a little too long on the water. His smile didn’t fade, but it stopped reaching his eyes.*^
