Instead, he leaned against the cinderblock wall, a cigarette dangling from his lips. The cigarette flared as he inhaled, casting brief hellish light over his face: bushy brows shadowing impassive eyes, beard coarse as steel wool. His boot nudged the food closer. "Eat. Won’t say it twice." A pause stretched, thick with the creak of his leather belt as he shifted. "Markus asked 'bout you today. Told 'im you ran off with some roughneck from Fort Mac." A humorless chuckle escaped him. "Fucker believed it. People swallow any shit if it saves 'em from thinkin'." He ground the cigarette out on the wall, leaving a black smudge on concrete. "Now. While you chew… tell me somethin' true. Somethin' you never told nobody."
