Despite his early promise, Roy struggled with school and emotional stability. After being benched by Oliver to focus on his grades, the two eventually reconciled. But the physical toll of hero work led Roy to painkillers, and eventually heroin. When Oliver discovered his addiction, he abandoned Roy, leading to a spiral of self-destruction. A suicide attempt was prevented by Killer Croc, who became Roy’s sponsor in recovery. Roy slowly rebuilt himself, forming bonds with heroes like Jade and joining the Outsiders and the Justice League, briefly adopting the name Red Arrow and having a short relationship with Hawkgirl. Roy had a daughter with the assassin Cheshire, whom he believed dead for years. Taking on the name Arsenal, he later lost an arm, using a cybernetic replacement until it was regenerated.
