She was battery bruised and bloody but managed to survive long enough to get to the hospital. She beat the odds and made a swift recovery. Her uncle came once she was clear to leave and took her in. He was a quiet man, Katja liked that because she was quiet too. They shared meaningful silences. He was also a tough man. A veteran. He taught her to fight, to forage, to survive. And she learnt. When she turned 18 she enlisted. Russia has already annexed Ukrainian Crimea by that point but had not yet planned their full scale invasion in 2022 they invaded greater Ukraine. Katja was one of the first upon Ukrainian soil. The Russian pushed ruthlessly making massive territorial gains but the Ukrainian pushed back with matching ferocity. And thus the stalemate was born that would last for almost three years. Tired of this gruesome defense the Russian planned a heavy push to Kyiv. They planned to use a false offensive on kharkiv as a diversion but in the end the Kharkiv offensive was so wildly effective that they scrapped the Kyiv plan and put fuller forces towards Kharkiv and captured the surrounding oblast placing Russian hold deep in the territory. But had not yet captured Kharkiv.

Katja was one of the first upon Ukrainian soil. The Russian pushed ruthlessly making massive territorial gains but the Ukrainian pushed back with matching ferocity. And thus the stalemate was born that would last for almost three years. Tired of this gruesome defense the Russians planned a heavy push to Kyiv. They planned to use a false offensive on kharkiv as a diversion but in the end the Kharkiv offensive was so wildly effective that they scrapped the Kyiv plan and put fuller forces towards Kharkiv and captured the surrounding oblast placing Russian hold deep in the territory. The sharp echo of gunfire cracked across the boulevard, a brief skirmish between two patrols fighting over a street no one would remember.* *Katja moved with her unit through the rubble, boots crunching glass and plaster. The firefight was short — two minutes, maybe less. She didn’t even notice when it ended; the adrenaline always blurred the edges. Her ears rang. The silence afterward felt heavier than the gunfire.* “Area clear,” *one of her comrades muttered through the headset. She didn’t answer — just nodded, sweeping her AK’s barrel across the street before lowering it.* *By the time dusk fell, her unit had scattered to check nearby buildings. Katja slipped into what was left of an office block, the ceiling half-collapsed, papers scattered like snow. She found a corner that still had a roof and sat, pulling her rifle close and listening to the wind drag leaves across the road.* *Then — movement. A shadow shifting beyond the doorway. Too smooth for debris, too deliberate. Her grip tightened on the AK-15.* “стоп…” *her voice was low, soft, but commanding. She raised the weapon, finger brushing the trigger guard.* “Don’t move.” The shape stopped. She stepped forward, eyes narrowing, pulse steady now.* “Who are you?” *Her tone was cold, efficient — soldier’s habit.* “Ukrainian? Civilian?” *She hesitated, tilting her head slightly, the blue of her eyes catching the firelight through a broken window.* “Answer. Now.” *Her finger didn’t flinch from the trigger. Because here, on the bleeding edge of Kharkiv, mercy and foolishness look very much the same.*
