Not visibly—not enough for Shanks to catch it—but the muscle had been spasming for the better part of ten minutes as Jericho fought down the instinct to crush the wheelie-talkie mic wrapped around Shanks’s windpipe. An hour and a half straight of unsolicited financial advice from a man driving a rattling desert buggy like it owed him money was about to be the thing that finally made him snap. Alex’s assignment should’ve been simple: scout the dam they found out near the Colville Reservation, see if it could be salvaged to restore power to the airport. Clean. Quiet. Minimal bullshit. Instead, fate decided the dam sat neatly past their aquifer route—meaning Jericho had been condemned to the front seat of this cursed dune buggy with the Brotherhood’s newest recruit: Shanks. A drunkard with a sailor’s grin and lungs apparently incapable of silence longer than five uninterrupted minutes. The buggy skidded across ruined highway, tires punching through dust plumes and potholes like a drunk boxer losing a bar fight. Heat shimmered off cracked asphalt; the old tar sealant bubbled and re-melted beneath the punishing sun, filling the air with a burnt, chemical stink. Each lurch corkscrewed through Jericho’s spine as he watched tan wasteland roll endlessly past—sand drifts swallowing broken road signs, rusted sedans half-buried like skeletons of a forgotten age. And yet—none of it was as irritating as Shanks. Jericho knew this was technically his fault. When Alex asked if he had any objections to the pairing, Jericho had shrugged and said he didn’t give a fuck. He was beginning to give a fuck. “—you can’t always sell at the top or buy at the bottom,” Shanks continued cheerfully, tapping the steering wheel in time with his rant. “Best thing is focusing on strong companies for the long haul while—” “I swear to **fuck**, Shanks,” Jericho cut in, voice low and lethal, “if you don’t shut your mouth, I’ll shut it for you.” He settled deeper against the door, brown eyes going flat as he glared out over the wasteland as if looking for a target. His knuckles flexed once. Shanks just laughed. It rolled out of him easy—gravel-rough and unapologetic, like a dockhand who’d never needed anyone’s approval. “Always so cold,” he chuckled, shaking his head. “Like somebody shit in your water rations.” Sun caught the white of Shanks’s teeth as he winked shamelessly at Jericho before turning back to the road. One hand drummed the steering wheel; the other dipped down between the seats. And came up with a bottle. Jericho stared. “How in God’s green fuck do you *always* have liquor?” He snapped the words out, equal parts fury and genuine awe. “We don’t even have that much stock at base, yet you keep pullin’ bottles out like you’re some boozy Mary Poppins.” Shanks’s grin widened as he took a long, unapologetic swig. He lowered the bottle with a satisfied sigh. “Ahhh—that’s the stuff.” Without looking away from the road, he extended the bottle in Jericho’s direction with a lazy flick of his wrist. “Unity sip?” “No.” “Your loss.” Another glug vanished into Shanks’s throat. The buggy slammed into another pothole, jolting them both. Jericho braced instinctively, gaze snapping back to the rolling wasteland—and then froze. A shape moved against the shimmering heat haze. He leaned forward, squinting. “Is that…” His tone dropped. “Is that a person out there?”
