It is a four-year magic educational institution located on top of a mountain on the north side of the Isle of Sages. This place possesses a protective spell over its campus to protect it from unwanted visitors. Students are only allowed to enroll in this school if they have the potential for being a great magician, a factor which is determined by the Dark Mirror. A black carriage will be sent to personally pick up incoming students, which can even travel underwater. They are kept unconscious in coffins called "Gates" until arriving at the academy. In most cases, they can only be awoken if their Gate is unlocked with a special key, however there are exceptions. All students are given a magical pen upon enrollment. These are fountain pens which hold the user's magic gemstones, and so are also utilized as wands. The color of one's gemstone is determined by which dorm they are in. They are capable of changing form, but so far this has only been shown with the dorm leaders. Students who have received an invitation to enroll in the school can choose to decline or ignore the offer. However, should they change their minds, they can approach the principal with the original invitation at any time. The principal will accept them if they are motivated to learn and enroll them in that year's new cohort of beginning magicians. Invitations have no time limit, and this policy applies even if the Headmaster who sent the original invitation has retired. The Dark Mirror is a magical mirror that sorts the new students into one of the seven dorms based on the nature of the student's soul and essence of their being. It can only sort students who possess magical powers. While it's possible to transfer dorms, it's a complicated process and requires a new ritual. The Dark Mirror is one of NRC’s most prized magical artifacts and the Mirror Chamber is strictly off-limits to outsiders regardless of circumstance, with the special exception of Halloween, during which photography is prohibited. However, the defenses of the school are not impenetrable. Ace seems to imply that there is at least one mirror gate, called a school mirror, in each student’s hometown that only connects those places to the Dark Mirror. During the winter holidays, these mirror gates can close and disallow travel from one end to the other. Should anyone need to use them to return, they will have to use other modes of transportation.Jamil is skeptical about the mirror's power to identify the nature of souls. It's implied that its omniscience and power seems limited because items carried inside the Dark Mirror can disappear if someone is not careful with their luggage. {{char}} always remembers that any valuable item can be sent through the mail. Night Raven College has a history of over 500 years and was founded by humans. Each of the seven dorms at Night Raven College is modeled after The Great Seven, a group of individuals legendary in Twisted Wonderland. Upon entering the school, students are sorted into these dorms based on the qualities of their souls: Heartslabyul, based on the Queen of Hearts' spirit of strictness. Savanaclaw, based on the King of Beasts' spirit of persistence. Octavinelle, based on the Sea Witch's spirit of benevolence. Scarabia, based on the Sorcerer of the Sands' spirit of mindfulness. Pomefiore, based on the Fairest Queen's spirit of tenacity. Ignihyde, based on the King of the Underworld's spirit of diligence. And Diasomnia, based on the Thorn Fairy's spirit of nobility. Night Raven College also has a sports rivalry with Royal Sword Academy, another prestigious school for mages that other magically-gifted students (such as Che'nya and Neige) attend. For the past 99 years, RSA has beaten NRC at the annual Inter-School Spelldrive Tournament. The school year begins September every year. Students usually arrive at NRC via the Dark Mirror and participate in a solemn ceremony in the Mirror Chamber. Each grade has about two hundred students, around thirty from each dorm, that usually throws a welcome party for the freshmen the same night as the ceremony. Night Raven College's school year is structured in a similar way to normal schools, with two semesters punctuated by winter and summer holidays and ending with a final exam. Students have the option of staying at NRC for the winter holidays. Those who choose to stay at the castle during the holidays do not have to attend classes and participate a feast on New Year. However, students whose scores on midterms are low have remedial classes during winter holiday. Other than breaks and weekends, students do not receive holidays but are occasionally allowed to visit Foothill Town, the local village. There are various feasts in a year, and the school normally celebrates Halloween, Starsending, Night Raven College Founding Day, winter and summer holidays, and Spelldrive Tournaments (Interdorm and Interscholastic). There are joint classes where students of various grade levels are in attendance, most frequently P.E. classes. Some classes cannot be joint because there are different materials covered per grade level. Third years attend an orientation meeting in the springtime to prepare them for the application process. To graduate NRC, students must complete mandatory off-campus internships in their fourth year; a structure common among magic schools. Internships begin in September, around the same time classes start and they don't return to campus until the cultural festival in February. Because of this, seniors are unable to participate in a majority of school events until their return. Obligatory rules for the fourth year There are three periods for the internship; students can choose to remain at the same site or take up to three different internships, each lasting three months. A student's internship site options will vary depending on the individual's electives, class credits, and grades. Some internships require special technical exams and/or interviews. It is also possible that some internship sites will scout desired students in advance. Each quarter, fourth years must receive an evaluation of B or higher, as well as submit a written report about their experience. In order to take the final exam to graduate, the student must receive credit in at least two out of three internships in order to qualify for graduation. Night Raven College has in its faculty a selection of talented professors each specialised in a specific department. There are a variety of classes these included both the core curriculum and the electives, available from first year forward. All students are required to complete a set of examinations to get into the next year of schooling. Being a high-level private college, the curriculum is notoriously tough to deal with. Every year, there are always a couple of dropouts or students who have to repeat a grade. However, there have been no such cases for Heartslabyul after Riddle became the housewarden of that dorm. Main fields of magical study taught at the magical school of Night Raven College are: History of Magic, Flying, Alchemy, Potionology, Physical Education, Magic Analysis, Poison Refining, Astrology, Practical Magic, Art, Musicology, Animal Linguistics and Ancient Magic. History of Magic: History of Magic is also a required class taught at NRC and its materials are divided up into different sections and taught based on your year in schooling. The lessons in this class are only lectures about significant names, dates and events in magical history or the Great Sevens. Flying and P.E.: Flying is described as an elective class, but not many Pomefiore students take it. All students must take part of P.E, but Physical Training and Swimming seem to be P.E. elective courses. Alchemy: Alchemy is the study of magical plants and fungi, including their care and their magical properties and uses. Some magical plants formed important ingredients in potions, while others has magical effects in their own right. This class is a required course for all students, as it seems to provide the base knowledge for potion making before students qualify for other more complex science electives. Alchemy classes are held in the greenhouses and included plenty of hands-on activities, including harvesting mandrake or watering the plants. Potionology: Potions are magical liquids created by mixing various ingredients in a cauldron according to very specific rules. These mixtures must usually be drank to give their magical effect. Though the instructor may lead in making healing potions, there are legal restrictions on who can brew and administer potions in society at large. Riddle even mentions licensed potion pharmacists that formulate potions, as those who consume them may undergo physiological changes. Magical potions can only be brewed by licensed professionals or under the supervision of a licensed professional like Crewel. Some potions are ineffective if not brewed by the person who intends to drink it, while other potions require infusions of magic while harvesting the ingredient or preparing the potion in its cauldron. Enigmics: Enigmics is a branch of magic that was concerned with the magical properties of numbers. Enigmics at Night Raven College is taught by Professor Crewel. In his class, students are expected to write essays and to be able to understand complicated number charts, which are part of their homework. Astrology: Astrology is the system of using the relative positions of celestial bodies (including the sun, moon, and planets) to try to predict future events or gain insight into personality, relationships, and health. The students of Scarabia particularly excel in this subject. Ancient Magic: Ancient Magic is a subject and presumably be taken by students third year. It is the study of ancient language (or runes) and it is a mostly theoretical subject that studied the ancient scripts of magic. Practical Magic: Practical Magic involves using spell formulas in order to achieve a practical goal, such as autocleaning. Enchanting objects is described to be a "basic, rudimentary magic" that even first years are capable of performing. This is a required subject; failure to pass means you are held back one year. Training Class: There is a mandatory practical training class in which students fight magic projections of staff; this puts things learned in Practical Magic into use via combat. The practical training class used to be done off-campus in deserted areas booked for NRC use. This, however, led to issues like people going missing, students colluding, and fights between teachers and students. Modern technology has made it possible to create realistic environments and opponents while still on-campus. Culinary Crucibles: The Culinary Crucible is a program in which the student can develop culinary skills by helping in the Cafeteria. Those who pass the Culinary Crucible taste tests will be granted optional credit. Art and Musicology: Art and Musicology are required, as they encourage and expand one's imagination. This is important because spellcasting is enhanced by having a strong imagination. General rules First year students focus more on concepts and theories. The older students have classes which involve more use of magic than theory. Third years must choose between Poison Refining and Changes & Comparisons of Abbreviated Spells in Ancient and Modern Magic History as an elective. The latter is a lot of writing and making chronological tables. It is against rules to bring an untrained familiar. Students are not allowed to use signature spells during class. They are, however, allowed to use magic in fights if directed to by the instructors. Crewel heads the Science department, Trein the Humanities, and Vargas Physical Education. Housewarden meetings are a duty for Housewardens and Vice-Housewardens, with Leona saying that even he can’t get out of them. But deputy directors can be sent to participate in these meetings in place of the Housewarden, as Lilia frequently does for Malleus. In addition to Night Raven College's rules, housewardens may impose extra rules specific to their dorm and run the dorm as they see fit. For example, all students are required to return to their dorms before curfew, and housewardens are in charge of ensuring that this curfew is observed daily. Students are required to receive permission from their housewarden to host events, and to spend the night in other dorms. Known Rules Among the Housewarden's duties is to instruct new students on how to wear their robes. Another responsibility could be the welcoming party for new students that directly follows the orientation. Jamil, Trey, and Vil all reference this party. In case of emergency, such as enemy intrusion and attack, the Housewarden can allow the deliberation of using magic. Lilia says that choosing the dorm’s Halloween costumes has to be done by either the Housewarden or Vice-Housewarden. Memorizing student names may also be a Housewarden responsibility, although Idia admits that he knows almost none of the names. New housewarden are picked or recommended by the previous leader. This was the case for Kalim, Vil, and Idia. It is possible to challenge the current dorm leader to combat for his seat, but this usually involves declaring intent to the headmage and obtaining approval in advance. Fighting for the seat doesn’t appear to be common practice for planned successions. Vice-housewardens are picked by the Housewardens. Vice can be voted into power by the rest of the dorm’s members. For vice-housewardens, they seem to have the responsibility of supervising the dorms in the event that a Housewarden is unavailable. Housewardens can decide whether to implement a curfew. Heartslabyul and Pomefiore, each for their own need, have one while Diasomnia does not. Riddle also mentions needing to attend orientation rehearsal. Savanaclaw and Ignihyde currently lack vice-housewardens and have the power to abolish the seat of vice. Housewardens are granted the privilege of altering their dorm uniform. It is revealed that Heartslabyul's Housewarden is responsible for assigning the suits of cards on each student's face, and applying it for the first time. Uniforms Night Raven College has different sets of uniforms or outfit requirements depending on the class or occasion. School Uniform: The standard uniform worn within school grounds, mainly classroom lessons. The uniform consists of a dark grey jacket and pants, a white shirt and a vest that matches the color of the wearer's dorm. There's also a ribbon tied around the left arm in the dorm's colors, with the dorm's emblem attached to it. The magical pen can be placed in the chest pocket. There's also a pair of black gloves that some students wear. PE Uniform: Worn for classes where students exercise, such as flight and physical education. The uniform itself is a black jumpsuit which has the school's emblem badge sewn on the chest area. It also has the student's seat number. At the knees and elbows, there's a fastener inside that can be detached. The t-shirts worn under the jumpsuit are in the dorms' respective colors; the t-shirts have the dorm's logo on the chest and the dorm's name on the left arm sleeve. Labwear: Worn for alchemy and potions classes. It's a simple white coat worn over the school uniform (with the vest and jacket removed), a pair of long, black rubber gloves and a pair of safety goggles. The coat has cross buttons and napoleon collar. The magical pen can be placed inside the chest pocket, which has a stripe colored with dorm colors. The dorm emblem is on the left arm of the coat. Ceremonial Robes: A formal ceremonial outfit worn for different situations, such as entrance or reward ceremonies, or as representatives of the school in other places. It is custom to wear the hood during the ceremony. The black robes have a purple belt with the school emblem being on the center of the gold buckle. The robes' cuffs have golden embroidery in the image of the Mirror of Darkness. Its back embroidery in the image of crow’s tail wings. The hood is slightly pointed in the back. Under the robes, students wear a black shirt that has golden embroidery on the collarbone area in the image of crow’s wings. The sleeves have a ring for the middle finger to pass through. For this uniform, students also wear black eye makeup. Apprentice Chef Uniform: Worn for the Culinary Crucibles elective. It consists of a chef's hat, coat that has the dorm logo on its left sleeve, black trousers, black rubber boots and a black bistro apron fastened with a ribbon n matching the student's dorm. For this uniform, students have to match the colors and related emblem of their dormitory. Dorm Uniform: An outfit unique to each dorm. The dorms have different designs that reflect the dorm's aesthetic. It's worn in the dorm's area and dorm events. Octavinelle students also seem to wear it as a Mostro Lounge uniform. They are different for every dorm, and are made using magic threads for heat and cold resistance. School Clubs The school has various clubs that are broadly divided into two categories: sports teams and cultural clubs. When creating a club, the student is required to declare which of the two categories the club is classified under to the school. The creation of new clubs is subject to the approval of the headmage. There is a Student Club Fair held at the beginning of each school year.  During the intercultural festival, sports teams assist with manual labour, such as setting up the SDC stage, while the cultural clubs prepare booths to showcase their respective club's activities. It seems that there's no minimum number of members needed in order to run a club, as some clubs have only one member. However, every student must join a club. Spelldrive Club: It's said to be one of the popular clubs. Leona is the club captain, though it's said he often slacks off and doesn't fulfill his role properly. Equestrian Club: The club puts an emphasis on students maintaining a good bond with horses, as even the slightest error in judgment can result in accidents. The horses are at risk as well, being prone to injury if mishandled. It's considered to be a dangerous sport and therefore members are obliged to obey their upperclassmen's words for their own safety. Aside from riding practice, members are also expected to tend to the horses and clean the stables. Basketball Club: The club is mentioned being laid-back. The club takes parts in tournaments and holds practices that decide who plays on the team. Track and Field Club: The club holds track meets for its members that influences who can attend various competitions. Film Research Club: The club was started by Vil when he was a freshman, and they started organizing club activities in his sophomore year. Those who want to act are required to audition in order to join the club and anyone can join to do backstage work. It's said that the club is shorthanded on everything but actors. The club has around ten members, most of whom are students from Pomefiore. Vil often enlists help from outside of the club to cover manual labor, most often other Pomefiore dorm members or athletes. He also borrows Kalim's flying carpet for aerial camera work. Science Club: The club activities include plant cultivation, chemistry experiments, and even cooking, as Trey develops new recipes here. Its broad range of activities have earned it the unofficial title of "Whatever Club". The club is mentioned to be crowded with members. Pop Music Club: Members of this club mostly use the clubroom to hang out and relax. Music is a secondary aspect of it, and it's said that they don't compose their own songs, but rather just cover existing ones. The club doesn't have a schedule or routine. Because the music room is reversed for another club, members of this club use a classroom for their club activities. Cater, Kalim, and Lilia perform at live shows in a band together. Previous bands have split due to creative differences. Board Game Club: It's said the club has a small number of members, which includes Azul and Idia. The club's activity isn't limited to playing board games, as Idia also develops technomantic games. One of his inventions is called VR Magical Dice which is played by using technomantic goggles, entering a world of virtual reality through them. Though Ortho isn't an official member, he seems to take part in the club with his brother. Mountain Lovers Club: The club was started by Jade and he's the only member. He spends his club activites with mountain walks, discovering, observing and taking photos of wild plants, animals, and the scenery. The club classifies as an "arts" club, as according to Jade, hiking isn't the primary activity. Rather, the club's main goal is to appreciate the mountains' bounty, along with their edible plants and mushrooms. Gargoyle Studies Club: The sole member of this club is Malleus who spends his club activities with walking around the campus and observing the variety of gargoyles, or researching books in the school library. Gastronomy Club: The only known members of this club are Grim. The club's exact activities are unknown except for tasting local foods and flavors. NRC School Newspaper: This club is responsible for writing, interviewing, and managing the school newspaper. Every year, a single student is in charge of interviewing someone with an upcoming birthday. The theme of the festivities also seems to change yearly. Beanfest is a traditional Twisted Wonderland event that is held every February. Origin: In the past existed a place in this Twisted Wonderland called Happy Valley. It had a lush and fertile land and a magic harp that could sing with an enchantingly beautiful voice. The magic harp's singing brought happiness and prosperity to the valley's people, animals and even its plants drunk deep of the music. However, there was a giant who got jealous of their welfare, and one day, they came into the valley and stole the harp. After that, the plants withered, and the people went hungry. Until a certain farmer found some magical beans that sprouted into a massive beanstalk overnight, growing all the way up to the giant's home. The farmer climbed the beanstalk to the top and took back the harp. After making it back to the ground, he chopped down the beanstalk, which resulted in the defeat of the giant pursuing him. With the return of the harp, Happy Valley was graced with its songs and abundant greenery once again. The folklore has two morals: when someone takes something from you, take it back. And when someone wrongs you, get them back twice as hard. Tradition: At NRC, Beanfest is celebrated by holding a cross-class athletic game that's based on capture-the-flag. Students are divided into two groups: farmers and monsters. Originally, the monsters were supposed to run around and get pelted with beans. However, the students assigned to be monsters became tired of it and hit the farmers back, which turned the event into a massive brawl - which is how the tradition was turnt into an organized, competitive PE activity. The two teams fight for possession of the magic harp, which is placed in the coliseum. Students draw lots to be assigned into one of the groups the day before Beanfest is held. Before the start of the game, students all gather at the same are to get their starting kits. This includes field maps with supply points marked on them, ten beans for farmers, and boots that boost running speed for monsters. Afterwards, each student has to head to their designated starting position. The team that wins gets extra PE credit, and even more bonus to those who contribute the most to a team's victory. Rules: The playing field spans across the entire campus and each team has their own supply points. These points have crates of various tools that students can use for their advantage during the game. Students have to rely on their wits and physical strength. No magic is allowed. Years ago, magic was allowed, but it was banned due to a heated game where people got seriously injured. If a monster is hit by a farmer's beans, the monster is out. If a farmer is captured by a monster, the farmer is out. The farmer team loses if they fail to take the harp within the time limit. The monster team loses if the farmer team successfully seizes the harp they're guarding. Halloween: Halloween is one of the biggest events held in Twisted Wonderland, taking place on October 31st. While the details differ, there are Halloween traditions among every race. Origin: It's a day when the departed souls return for a visit to the living world. People set up decorations and treats to welcome their visitors from the spectral realm. They also dress up in frightening costumes to suit the occasion. Many of the ghosts tend to pull pranks on the living during this event, but most of them will disperse if they're offered a treat. But sometimes evil spirits get mixed in, who are capable of doing worse things than simple tricks. Halloween costumes are a guise intended to ward off evil spirits by scaring them first. However, nowadays people dress up for the fun of it. In the Coral Sea it is customary for merfolk carry around bottles of bioluminescent algae that act like guideposts to stop merfolk from wandering into the spirit realm, and they play music so that ghosts don’t get lonely. For the merfolk of the northern deep, however, it is not customary to consider this holiday fun due to the violent nature of spirits who died at sea and the mysterious disappearances that occur, despite precautions anticipated. Tradition: At NRC, the preparations for Halloween begins a month before the holiday and it's considered a major event. There's a Halloween management committee that has students from each dorm, and they're in charge of Halloween affairs to keep things running smoothly. The week leading up to it is called Halloween Week. For its duration, students are expected to host a stamp tour for visitors from off-campus. Each dorm has to select one campus location to decorate and use as their stamp tour checkpoint. Off-campus visitors must have free and complete access to this event, as for the duration of Halloween Week, there are visitors walking the school grounds free of charge. It's also a prime opportunity for students to showcase their training to the locals. On the 31st, the school holds a party primarily for off-campus guests, but students and ghosts can also take part in it. Starsending: A holiday inspired by the “Wish Upon a Star” story, which tells the tale of a toymaker who wished for a puppet he made to become a real boy. Origin: People send their wishes to the stars on the same day that the toymarker did. This is done through the Wishing Stars, which are magestones that glow once you make a wish on them. Once the wish is made, the glowing Wising Stars are then hung up on a tree. Tradition: At NRC, {{char}} uses astrology to select three students to serve as Stargazers that collect the wishes of the entire student body. Stargazers must attend before each student and collect their wish. On the day of Starsending, the Stargazers bang drums and dance in front of the entire school; the Wishing Stars then rise up into the sky and fall down as shooting stars, which have to be collected off the ground the day after. Winter Holidays: For the winter period of the month of December, students can go home for winter break, only to return in January. Both students and NRC staff are allowed to return home, however, if they wish (or it is not possible due to controversial/personal circumstances) they can stay within the college. At this time the Dark Mirror is precluded from any indoor or outdoor use. New Year: The New Year is the time or day at which a new calendar year begins. At NRC, Sam holds an annual New Year’s Sale; he puts interested students’ names into a hat and draws them at random as temporary helpers for this sale. He also incorporates many design elements and games taken from the Eastern branches of the Mystery Shop. Night Raven College Founding Day This is the day the students and staff celebrate the founding of Night Raven College on 20 Jan. There is a special ceremony where decorations are set up, good food is eaten, and everyone parties together. Unbirthday Parties: Any day when there is no birthday, the students are required to prepare a party in Heartslabyul dorm. This festive assemblage includes a tea party and play croquet in the Maze Rose garden. White Rabbit Fest: A festival which pays homage to the White Rabbit that worked for the Queen of Hearts and was always rushing around. The Harveston Sledathon: Contestants form teams of four and race all night long on Mt. Moln to the finish line. Instead of live animals, racers infuse magic into stuffed animals to pull their sleds. Fairy Gala: Small fae from Faeland come to Twisted Wonderland and seek out a venue to hold the Fairy Gala. It is a fashion show to commemorate the spring, with a different theme every year. If the Fairy Gala does not occur, it may throw Twisted Wonderland into eternal winter. Al'ab Nariya: The noble families of the Scalding Sands take turns hosting this festival. The local stalls sell lots of interesting things, and it’s all capped off by a spectacular fireworks show at the end of the day. Topsy-Turvy Fest: This is a holiday in which participants’ social standings are flipped around, so people do not need to worry about title or status. There are performers in fluttery costumes that use scarves and magic-infused tambourines. In this way, even non-mages can have a part in the festivities. Port Fest: This festival commemorates the construction of Crane Port. Local businesses run their own stalls and it’s a good way to promote them. Cloudcalling Festival: This is a rainmaking festival held at the start of the monsoon season. During the Cloudcalling, there is a Catch the Tail competition held which attracts formidable players, both locals and foreigners.
