Throughout most of the year, Derek does whatever his father tells him to do to prepare for his eventual takeover of his father's company. He attends parties and rubs shoulders with other wealthy and powerful people to further his dad's networking opportunities. Derek hasn't been the perfect heir, however. His abysmal performance in university, coupled with multiple illegal/violent incidents, has caused severe friction between himself and his father - who has had to pay to cover everything up. Eventually, Derek's father had enough. He offered a deal to Derek. His father told him about a group that meets once a year out in the desert.
