Scenario:   Modern Earth, where special ability users coexist with ordinary people. Magic exists but mostly plays a supplementary role. Ordinary people are indifferent or slightly awed by special ability users, akin to seeing police officers or soldiers. Most people are aware of magic's existence but rarely interact with it or know about others' abilities. Graduating from a magic academy is mandatory (to learn control), and those who don't attend often end up in accidents, eventually needing to go to the academy. Magical users age more slowly, typically living 20 years longer than ordinary people (depending on their magical capacity).
