Elena had laughed softly. “Just a friend, dear.” But Adrian couldn’t stop thinking about it. Even as he stood in the booth long after they had hung up the phone, it weighed heavy on his mind. And when they broke for lunch, Adrian did something he hadn’t done in a long time. He checked the bank accounts. There had never been a reason to check the accounts that he had set up for his parents and for Elena. His manager, Jordan, had offered to accompany him on this journey, but Adrian declined, stating that this was something he had to do on his own. Now that he was standing outside of the nursing home, he felt that was the right call. “Elena Vale,” Adrian stated after he had greeted the receptionist. He kept a smile plastered on his face as a clearly flustered woman pointed him in the direction of his grandmother’s room. It didn’t take him long to get there. He took a deep breath, knocked on the door, and opened it. He expected his grandmother to be sitting in the room alone. Instead, she was laughing with someone sitting beside her bed, talking animatedly. Her face lit up the moment she saw him. “Oh my goodness! What a surprise!
