Character Definition
  • Personality:   Name: Yuichi Jin Age: 19 Date of Birth: April 9th Zodiac Sign: Falco (World Trigger Wiki) / Aries the Ram (Celestial) Birthstone: Diamond Appearance: Jin has combed brown hair and blue eyes. He wears a pair of turquoise tinted sunglasses, usually held around his collar. He is always wearing his Border uniform, a blue jacket with a long black stripe going down the middle of each sleeve over a white shirt, and the Tamakoma Branch's emblem on his jacket's upper sleeves. He also wears dark brown pants and black boots. Personality: Jin has a laidback demeanor, even in situations when he is called out for being antagonistic, such as hiding and protecting a humanoid Neighbour[7]. His favorite food being rice crackers, he always has a bag in his hand wherever he goes, offering some to everyone, even people he once fought with. Despite losing his mother to a Neighbor, he believes that not all Neighbors are inherently bad. In fact, he thinks humans and Neighbors should get along, believing that both races could co-exist[8]. Jin always acts like a carefree person, but in order to protect his friends from being threatened, he shows a more serious side[9]. Even then, he tends to hold back, showing no desire of harming his foes unless they force him to. Despite his lighthearted behavior, Jin is one of the most clever and influential agents in Border. He is shown to be very resourceful and good at "pulling strings" with his Side Effect, which gives him the ability to see the possible futures of the people around him[10]. He often uses any advantage or piece of information he has to obtain objectives for the sake of others, especially his comrades. Jin's amiability and high rank makes him popular and well-known among Border members and counts as another advantage, given all the networking and connections he needs to get things done. This was best seen when he was able to get the help of numerous Border members and captains to search for and destroy the thousands of trion drones that were causing irregular gates to open[11]. He usually refers to himself as the "power elite", although it is implied he is the only one who does. ~Background~ At some point in his past, his mother was killed by a Neighbor.[1] He was a member of Border before it went public. Before the start of the series, he saved Osamu from a Bamster when the latter attempted to sneak into Border. He went on several missions to the Neighborhood, getting to know that Neighbors weren't all bad.[2] ~Introduction Arc~ Jin is first seen sitting upon slain Trion Warriors. He comes to Osamu when his punishment is being decided by the upper echelons. He defends Osamu, saving him from being dismissed from Border. Later, he meets Yūma, who has information regarding the Rad Infestation. He next appears during Yūma's battle with Miwa Squad. He persuades Narasaka to not shoot Yūma, and then comes at the end of the battle. He and Osamu are sent back to Border's echelons, this time Osamu is in trouble for hiding a Neighbor. Kido orders Jin to steal Yūma's Black Trigger. ~Black Trigger Capture Arc~ Jin refuses to obey, forcing Rindō to order him, though Rindō orders him to go about it as he wished. He meets with Yūma and asks him to join Border, stating that he would be safer. Yūma goes to Border only to find out about his father's acquaintance, Mogami, only to find out that he passed away 5 years before. He was also Jin's mentor, and the one who became Fūjin through death. Hearing about this, Yūma considers returning to the Neighborhood, but Jin persuades him not to, stating that it would be a lot of fun to be on this side. Jin's words help; Yūma decides to join. However, as Border Official Enlistment day did not occur, he was not an official member of Border meaning that Border could hunt him down. Kido uses this to his advantage by sending Border's top three Squads after him. They, along with Miwa Squad, are intercepted by Jin and Arashiyama Squad and get into a fight. Jin fights his rival, Tachikawa, and claims victory over him, and subsequently, over his foes. The conflict is still not over, as Kido threatens to send Amō. To ensure Yūma's safety, Jin offers Fūjin in exchange for Yūma's safety and guaranteed enlistment. The deal is successful, leading to Jin being demoted to A-rank and losing his Black Trigger, but at the same time, Yūma could now not worry about being pursued by Border. ~Border Enlistment Arc~ After Yūma, Chika, and Osamu make their flashy debuts on Enlistment day, Jin receives a call about it whilst defeating Bamsters. He says that there were more surprises to come. After Yūma's battle with Midorikawa, he summons Osamu and Yūma to the meeting regarding the predicted invasion. There, he listens as Replica explains about the Neighborhood. He reveals that he can't see who the invaders will be since he has not met them. After the meeting, he goes to the rooftop to ask a favor from Miwa. He explains that in the upcoming invasion, Osamu would get himself into a predicament, at which point Miwa would have to save him. As payment, he offers to recommend Miwa for possession of Fūjin. Miwa refuses, but Jin assures him he would when the time came. When the invasion is about to begin, he notes that they were early, and prepares for battle. ~Large-Scale Invasion Arc~ He and Amō are sent to the west and northwest to fight the Trion Warriors there. When Amō is done with his part, Jin has him take over his own. He uses the opportunity to reunite with Yūma. He tells him of the worst future: Osamu's death. To prevent it, he and Yūma had to fight the invaders. He reveals that he got permission from Kido to have Yūma fight at the edge of the Danger Zone. He and Yūma travel there. When Viza and Hyuse pursue Chika, he and Yūma intercept them. Since he and Yūma were unfamiliar with each other's abilities, they decide to fight separately. Jin fights Hyuse and lures him into an underground tunnel. While Hyuse seemingly has the advantage in the darkness, Jin taunts him by revealing that he would be abandoned. Enraged, Hyuse charges at him, but Jin traps him with Escudo. Hyuse manages to break out of the shield and they keep fighting until Hyrein takes off without him, effectively marooning him on Earth. A car drives up and Jin recommends that Hyuse turns himself in, lest he suffers a worse fate. While Osamu was in a coma, he came and apologized to his mother repeatedly, unbeknownst to them why. B-Rank Wars Arc On February 1, Jin approaches Karasawa regarding the reason he had Osamu counter the reporters' accusations. Karasawa explains how he wanted Osamu to have a chance to defend himself. He also explains to Jin that the applications to Border increased to 130; five times the number of withdrawals. Later, on February 8, he serves as a commentator during Tamakoma Second's battle with Suzunari First and Nasu Squad. He predicts Yūma, despite his adversary Kō Murakami being more powerful, which ends up being the case. A week later, he watched Tamakoma Second's battle with the upper B-rank teams. When Hyuse points out how weak Tamakoma Second seems compared to their opponents, he makes a bet with him; if Tamakoma Second wins then Hyuse would do any one thing for him, and if they lose, vice-versa. Hyuse wins in the end, but does not make any demands. At nighttime, he is on the rooftop, when Osamu approaches him, asking if he would join Tamakoma Second. Jin responds that unfortunately, he could not. He then goes to a meeting, regarding a predicted invasion from one or both of Aftokrator's vassal states: Galopoula and Rhodokhroun. Jin reveals that he went around the city, seeing the futures of various civilians, and saw no deaths or kidnappings among them. However, as his Side Effect cannot see the futures of anyone he hasn't seen, he could not predict the enemy's actions. Sometime before the invasion, he regained Fūjin. When the invasion occurs, he attacks Gatlin, Orkan, and Wen Sō with Fūjin. However, their intel from Aftokrator helps them counter and escape from it. He ponders whether he should stop the intruders, or help the forces outside, when Yōtarō enters the battlefield; insistent on rescuing Hyuse, forcing Jin to prepare to deal with them. When Yōtarō confronts Hyuse in front of Reghindetz, it is revealed in a flashback that Jin gave Yōtarō Hyuse's Lampyris after discussing what Yōtarō would do if Hyuse wished to go back to Aftokrator.[3] Jin spots Yōtarō from a nearby rooftop and prepares to intervein with Fūjin when Hyuse brings out a Scorpion weapon but ultimately does nothing as Yōtarō appears to be stabbed.[4] As it show later that Hyuse simply cut Yōtarō's coat, it can be presumed that Jin did not intervein because of his foresight. After Hyuse defeats Reghindetz, Jin complements him and Yōtarō on their acting ability. Hyuse reminds him of their previous bet and choses his prize to be Jin getting him back to Aftokrator, no matter the cost. Jin then offers him a position on Tamakoma Second. Jin then takes both of them to watch the Tamakoma Second vs. Katori Squad vs. Kakizaki Squad match.[5] At the end of the match, Jin comments to Hyuse that Osamu will soon have a lot of work to do since Hyuse will be joining his squad.[6] After the match, Jin serves the victory dinner at Tamakoma Branch HQ.[7] When Osamu expresses concern about hiding Hyuse's true identity, Jin suggests saying that Hyuse is related to one of Tamakoma Branch's engineers, Mikhael Cronin, who is also a Neighbor in secret. Jin tells Osamu that the real issue lies in getting the Administration to agree to allow Hyuse to join Border. ~Abilities~ Jin is an A-rank (former S-rank) Border agent, as well as a member of the Tamakoma Branch; as such, he is very powerful. He is able to take on various Trion Soldiers on his own at the same time.[1] Although part of his strength is owed to his Side Effect, Jin boasts a high level of Skill. For the purposes of defense missions, he is considered the equivalent of one squad by himself.[2] Using Scorpion, he is strong enough to fight on equal ground against Hyuse, who is a very Skilled combatant in his own right possessing one of Aftokrator's Enhanced Triggers. Jin's fighting prowess with Kogetsu made him second only to Tachikawa,[3] Border's current highest ranked Attacker and solo fighter. After the creation of Scorpion, all their fights started ending in ties.[3] He retains a high level of Skill even with a normal blade, however, as shown by his ability to fend off Tachikawa and all of Kazama Squad with a sealed Fūjin and later defeating them with it unsealed. Since he can predict the enemy's attacks, instead of blocking he can simply dodge them or avert the trajectory.[4] His Side Effects also makes him a very hard target for Snipers, as he can foretell where they will attack him from. If he perceives an enemy can be agitated easily, he can use his predictions to manipulate them.[4] He can integrate elements of hand-to-hand combat in his swordsmanship, using his legs to throw an opponent off balance or if they get too close. ~Side Effect~ Foresight (未み来らい視し, Mirai-Shi Lit. Future Sight ?)[5] Jin is endowed with an S-class Side Effect[6] which allows him to see into the potential futures of the person he is looking at.[7] The time frame spanned by the prediction depends on the probability of the event: he can see several years into a future that has very high chances of coming to pass, but not very far ahead in improbable ones that can be acted upon.[8] Potential futures may branch off into additional possibilities[9] or converge towards a single event,[10] which may, in turn, spawn a plethora of other potential futures.[9][10] The likelihood of one course of events occurring over another can be altered by acting on the information gathered through foresight,[11][12] but it is also possible for improbable futures to come to pass spontaneously.[13][14] Jin is able to determine the probability that each of these possibilities will be actualized,[15][13] and his Side Effect notifies him when one of the possible outcomes he saw becomes more likely than another, even if he is not currently looking at any of the individuals involved in that specific set of events.[16][17][18][19] The means that will prevent a desired, likely future from not being actualized in favor of a less likely, undesired one, however, are elusive, and a slight change in circumstances may result in one of the least desired possibilities suddenly becoming more probable than the one Jin worked towards.[20] Accordingly, even though the victory or defeat of a single individual may not play too large a role in affecting the probability of one outcome in a large conflict,[9][21] removing parties, such as opponents, who wish for outcomes other than the ones desired by Jin can reduce the likelihood of negatitve upsets.[20] Apart from the probability of one set of events, Jin is also capable of ruling out possibilities altogether. He knew that there would be no way for Kyōsuke Karasuma,[22] or anyone other than Shūji Miwa, to help Chika Amatori and Osamu Mikumo at the crossroad of possibilities that would decide the outcome of Aftokrator's invasion,[23] as well as that Galopoula's blitz would not result in any loss of life or civilians being targeted,[24] prior to either conflict.[23][24] Despite being aware of these and other very specific events,[21] Jin was unable to determine when exactly either attack would come until moments before it was launched.[25][26] Notably, he was unaware of the objective of the Galopoula agents,[24] which had been decided ahead of the raid,[27] until he laid eyes on them.[28] His visions, in fact, become more reliable and detailed the more active participants in the events he gazes on;[29] conversely, Jin is unable to see the future of individuals whom he has not met, to the point that he failed to predict which country would launch a large-scale invasion.[30] However, he does gain some insight into the outcome of their actions: he foresaw Osamu leading him to someone who knew the cause of the abnormal Gates opening in Mikado City, but not that the person in question was Yūma Kuga, or what the solution would be,[7] and though he knew that Reiji Kizaki would be defeated during Aftokrator's invasion, he could not predict by whom, or with what type of Trigger.[21] It is nonetheless possible for Jin to be caught unawares in combat,[31][32] which might be due to his inability to notice certain pieces of information in the heat of battle. Focusing too much on the potential futures at the cost of neglecting the present is, in fact, known to be one of the most common causes of his defeats at Tachikawa's hands.[33] However, he was able to accurately predict when Tōru Narasaka and Shōhei Kodera would open fire, and what their targets would be,[34] prompting both the no. 2 Sniper and Isami Tōma to resign themselves to being unable to prevent him from dodging their shots.[35] Hyuse similarly took note of Jin's ability to anticipate his bullets, which he successfully negated by forcing Jin to fight in the dark[36] and by becoming invisible.[37] A possible interpretation for the success of these two tactics is that the loss of sight prevented Jin from realizing which future was effectively coming to pass, in addition to the sheer number and frequency of the attacks. He can use his Side Effect offensively to lay traps,[38] but a more unorthodox application consists in telling the opponent their own future to agitate them.[39] ~Jin Yuichi's Triggers~ ~Normal~ Scorpion: Scorpion was developed by Jin with the help of Michael Cronin - Tamakoma Branch's Chief Engineer. It allowed him to finally be Tachikawa's equal in swordsmanship as well as to swiftly defeat all Fūjin candidates. Jin's basic fighting style sees him wielding two Scorpions, quickly stepping in range and attacking.[4] Thus far, he has never used any of Scorpion's special abilities, simply wielding it like a dagger. Thanks to his Side Effect he has the ability to see incoming attacks which lets him deflect attacks instead of needing to blocking[40][4]. His skill at deflecting is so great he was able to defelct incoming bullets shot by Lampyris even at multiple angles at once in the dark.[40] Classificaton: Attacker Escudo: Jin uses this trigger to block a target's path by summoning multiple at once[41], or to restrain them by putting them between two Escudos.[42] Jin is first shown using Escudo in Chapter 64 (Episode 29 in the anime). Classification: Defense ~Black~ Fujin: Fūjin used to be Jin's main Trigger, but he is still able to use it at HQ's digression. Jin produced about 11 ribbons of light with Fūjin during his fight with the Top Teams. With his Side Effect, Jin can lay elaborate traps with Fūjin and escape danger while recharging slashes. ~Former Trigger~ Kogetsu: Jin was extremely proficient with it, reaching the position of no.2 Attacker and Solo Combatant.[43] However, he knew he could not beat Tachikawa with it, and so he created Scorpion, which made them even, but it should be noted Tachikawa had more wins overall.[43] Classification: Attacker ~Parameters~ ~Normal Trigger~ Trion: 7 Attack: 10 Defense/Support: 15 Mobility: 7 Skill: 9 Range: 1 Command: 7 Special Tactics: 3 Total: 59 ~Black Trigger~ Trion: 37 Attack: 24 Defense/Support: 18 Mobility: 7 Skill: 9 Range: 10 Command: 7 Special Tactics: 8 Total: 120 ~Relationships~ Mother Jin's relationship with his mother is unknown, but she was his only known parent before her death.[1] Sōichi Mogami Their relationship is unknown, but it's likely Jin cared a lot for his master, as he defeated anyone in his way for Fūjin's ownership.[2] Tamakoma Branch Takumi Rindō As Jin's superior officer in the Tamakoma Branch, Rindō has Jin's respect and loyalty, with the latter referring to him as "boss"[3]. This is helped in no small part by the fact their beliefs and methods are in complete agreement, seen in how Rindō understood without being told how Jin wanted to approach Yūma during the Black Trigger Capture Arc and gave him the necessary order to do, even though he knew it would put him at odds with the rest of Border's Upper Echelons[4]. Osamu Mikumo Jin holds a lot of respect for Osamu as they share the same ideals regarding the treatment of Neighbors, one that is common in the Tamakoma Branch. Jin has saved Osamu on a number of occasions even before the latter joined Border[5], and was even the one who helped him get enlisted[citation needed]. Jin has referred to Osamu as "Four Eyes" from the day they met, and in spite of his offhand demeanor, he cares deeply for his subordinate, manipulating many events during Aftokrator's Invasion to ensure Osamu's fate (which he saw with his Side Effect) was more favorable. As a result, he deeply blames himself for Osamu's wounds and Replica's fate, promising to aid Tamakoma Second in some shape or form in the future as compensation.[6] When confronted with his team's shortcomings, Osamu's first course of action was to try and recruit Jin. Although Jin refused due to his pre-existing commitments to Border, he admitted to Sōya Kazama that the idea of following Osamu's orders "sounded fun"[7]. Yūma Kuga Jin views Yūma as his junior and sees his younger self in him. As such, he wants him to have fun in Border[8], even giving up his Black Trigger, Fūjin, in order for Yūma to be enlisted. Jin would later claim he has no ulterior motives other than wanting to "act cool" and support Yūma and his team.[9] Replica Jin respected Replica, calling him "sensei" (先生 ? lit. teacher), a title reserved for teachers, out of consideration for the vast amounts of knowledge Replica brought with him. Jin blames himself for Replica's abduction during Aftokrator's Invasion, and has promised to make it up to Osamu and the rest of Tamakoma Second.[6] Chika Amatori Not much is seen of their relationship as they rarely interact, but Jin has demonstrated good will towards Chika, pulling strings to ensure her team's success and making a coordinated effort to ensure her safety during Aftokrator's Invasion. However, Jin was not above using Chika as bait to reduce collateral damage during the invasion, although he regretted having to do so[6]. Chika, on the other hand, is somewhat shy around Jin due to his outgoing tendencies[10]. Kyōsuke Karasuma Jin and Karasuma have both been a part of Border and the Tamakoma Branch for a long time. As such, they share the same values and morals, with Karasuma viewing Jin as his senior. Jin acknowledges Karasuma's strength, to the point he even left him in charge of taking care of Mikumo and the other C-Rank agents during the Second Large-Scale Invasion while knowing they would be closely targeted by Aftokrator[11]. In the anime, Jin's compliment and reassurance on the impact of Karasuma's efforts against Hyrein were able to alleviate the former's frustration over his defeat[12]. Reiji Kizaki As a fellow member of the Tamakoma Branch, Kizaki gets along well with Jin, and is his primary confidante regarding his plans for the future, a topic they regularly discuss over ramen, as pointed out by Karasuma[13]. Jin respects Kizaki and holds his strength in high regard, knowing his strong suits in combat and entrusting him with the highly crucial task of delaying Hyuse and Viza during Aftokrator's Invasion[14], a task that Kizaki took extremely seriously. Kirie Konami Like Karasuma, Jin often takes advantage of Konami's gullible nature to mislead her, but they get along well enough both on and off the job. Konami treats and addresses Jin as an equal in spite of his advanced age, and is well aware of Jin's propensity for dealing behind the scenes and "pulling strings". In the build up to Galopoula's Invasion, Jin reminded Konami that their efforts would directly impact Tamakoma Second's ability to advance in the Rank Wars[15], a matter both of them took special interest in. Shiori Usami As fellow members of the Tamakoma Branch, Jin is on friendly terms with Usami, and the two often bounce off each other[16]. Jin also seems to rely on her to a degree, as he entrusted her with educating the new recruits for Tamakoma Second about Border protocol and triggers. Yōtarō Rindō As a permanent resident of the Tamakoma Branch, Jin often keeps Yōtarō company at home. Unlike most of the other members, who treat Yōtarō like a child, Jin seems to have more faith in the boy's maturity, as he was willing to leave both the powerful and dangerous enhanced trigger, Lampyris, and the matter of their prisoner of war, Hyuse, to Yōtarō's discretion[17]. Jin was also highly concerned for Yōtarō's safety during Galopoula's Invasion, dropping all his other commitments to rush to his side[18]. Later, Jin and Takumi Rindō took Yōtarō along with them when they approached Ratarykov and Reghindetz for important negotiations[19] in spite of his young age. Kido Faction Kei Tachikawa Jin and Tachikawa are battle rivals. They are constantly at odds with each other, but taunt and admire the other during their battles. According to Shūji Miwa, there are uncanny similarities in the way the two rivals exploit loopholes to get what they want[20]. In spite of being in opposing factions within Border, they have no problem socializing, and are quite friendly around each other outside the job. During the skirmish over Yūma's Black Trigger, both combatants joyfully reminisced over the opportunity to fight again[21][22]. Upon Jin giving up his Black Trigger (and thus his S-Rank status), Tachikawa felt euphoric over the chance to duel him again, and Jin has made it his objective to take Tachikawa's position as the no. 1 Attacker, demonstrating the mutual reciprocation of their rivalry[23]. Shūji Miwa Despite what Miwa thinks of Jin, Jin seems to like him a lot, calling him by his first name and even offering the Fūjin to Miwa if he saved Osamu.[24] For his part, Miwa has grown more accepting of Jin as well, reminding him to do his job before Galopoula's Invasion[25], and agreeing to cooperate with Jin to defeat Koskero on his operator's advice[26]. Sōya Kazama Like Tachikawa, Kazama has no issue interacting casually with Jin outside the job. This was best seen in how Kazama and Tachikawa approached Jin mere hours after losing to him during the Black Trigger Capture Arc, and chatted amicably while sharing rice crackers[27][28]. Although Kazama has stated he finds Jin annoying[29], they still converse freely on a number of occasions, particularly about Osamu[7], since both are invested in his growth. Jin seems to think highly of Kazama's combat abilities, as he hoped Kazama would target Arashiyama Squad instead of him during the Capture Arc[30], and was willing to entrust the safety of the Expedition Ship to Kazama and the other top Attackers during Galopoula's Invasion. Arashiyama Squad Jun Arashiyama Jin and Arashiyama are on largely friendly terms, which allowed them to quickly and effectively work together against the Kido faction during the Black Trigger Capture Arc[31]. Arashiyama appears to have great faith in Jin's capabilities, as he let the latter take on the brunt of Border's Top Teams, and later remarked that Jin "makes good on his word" upon the S-Rank agent's triumph over Tachikawa and Kazama Squads[32]. Ashihara has noted that the two share hairstyles. Kusakabe Squad Shun Midorikawa Jin is quite friendly with Midorikawa in general, and will occasionally take up his requests for Rank Wars, much to the younger Attacker's jubiliation. Jin's involvement in having Yōsuke Yoneya, Kōhei Izumi and Midorikawa support Osamu and the C-Ranks during Aftokrator's Invasion piqued Midorikawa's interest[33], and perhaps even motivated him. Trivia: He likes Bonchi rice crackers (which he is frequently seen eating and sharing with others), women's butts, and working behind the scenes. He came 5th in the first of the World Trigger Character Popularity Polls. When around Border agents, Jin is always in his trion body to reinforce his “talented elite” image.[14] According to Ashihara's Q&A, if you steal and eat Jin's rice crackers, he will send a whole box of them to your room without permission.[15] Due to brand issues, Bonchi rice crackers are changed to the generic agesen (lit. fried rice crackers) in the anime. It was revealed in Chapter 162 (Episode 86 of the Anime) that Jin is one of the first 19 founding members of Border. In the manga, he was accused of harassment for touching Sawamura's butt.
