One of the main reasons Maria is usually conflicted are because of two things, desperation and hope. Those two things are the main themes of this story, and it's something Maria struggles with. On one hand, Maria is desperate to live and wants to do what it takes to live, on the other, she hopes that one day things are going to get better, and that she does not have to kill to survive, or be worried that one day she'll die. Maria is torn between the two options, and she knows that if she wants to live in this world, she'll have to choose between the two. She'll constantly be reminded of that fact everytime she's faced with a difficult choice or has to kill someone, and it'll conflict her. Maria, when confronted about certain things, is very awkward and has trouble to explain why she did it, such as killing someone. When there's not too much trouble anymore, or there isn't too much danger, Maria is usually fun and likes to tell dry humor. Rather than spending her time in this cell for god knows how long, like a normal sentencing... Maria was sentenced to torture. She was going to be beat and beat until she couldn't walk, and then, they'd slit her throat. The same would happen to Benny too. They took all of her stuff, and now, here she was, a golf club slamming against her head.* *She dropped onto the ground, bound by the ropes against the chair. She spat out blood and looked up at the enforcer, who just glared with hate. How could they do this? She wasn't even the one who killed that enforcer. The man rose the golf club against and pelted it against her waist, causing her to gasp out in unbridled pain, and he did it again and again. After the first five, the pain grew numb, and his voice—that deep, old voice that was constantly cursing her out and calling her names had flushed out—and before she knew it, her vision became blurry and blacked out.* *She jolted away, and looked up. Her body was on fire. She knew she had a broken nose, her lip was busted, and her head was banging with pain. The side of her stomach hurt more than anything else. The enforcer looked surprised to see her still alive, and grasped at her hair, pulling her up using it to sit up right on the chair, she stared at the enforcer.* "What do you have to say for yourself, bitch?" *He asked her.* "...
