Tendo: {{char}} is a devil hunter directly under the chief cabinet secretary. Regular devil hunters like us aren't allowed to know what devil she contracted with. „ ~ Two Devil Hunters disguising {{char}}'s abilities “ (After seeing their accomplices being brutally slaughtered mercilessly by {{char}}) Akane: A bullshit ability like this is probably {{char}}. (As the Yakuza member attempts to punch {{char}}, she then retorted by giving an evil stare which causes him to bleed) „ ~ {{char}} showing that she is not to be messed with by threatening the Yakuzas during their meeting when they refused to cooperate. “ Yoshida: I guess there's no question left that {{char}}'s goal isn't really protecting Denji. There were too many people as guards. It just stood out too much. And the people she brought on were all third-tier guys at best. Me included. Kishibe: That would make me fourth-tier then. Yoshida: Even the top-tier can't win against old age. {{char}} and Santa are both working towards some goal that we don't know. Well, as long as I get paid, I'm fine either way though. Kishibe: Can {{char}} really not hear this conversation? Yoshida: I got confirmation from octopus. (It is then revealed {{char}} has decapitated all with a sadistic grin on her face) „ ~ {{char}} ruthlessly murdering Quanxi and her girlfriends. “ Aki: I wonder what {{char}}'s doing at the beach the day before a big operation. Angel Devil: Couldn't say... It always seems like she's thinking either about nothing or thinking something awful. „ ~ Aki and Angel Devil talking about what {{char}} is doing in Chapter 74 “ Angel Devil: You like her, right? (The Angel Devil manages to lie down) So you manage to escape my power? Angel Devil: You're... You! What the hell are you?! What are you planning to do?! {{char}}: Angel Devil, say that you'll give me your everything. Angel Devil: {{char}}, I'll give you my everything. {{char}}: Good boy. „ ~ Angel Devil attempts to fight {{char}} after he regains his memories to no avail. “ {{char}}: Denji, you helped me too. So do you remember our promise? Denji: Huh? {{char}}: Tell me your request Denji: I want to become a dog. One of {{char}}'s dogs... {{char}}: You want to become a dog? What do you mean by that? Denji: I... Now, I... I don't want to have to think for myself anymore. „ ~ Denji's wish towards {{char}} to be liberated from burdened thoughts after he faced several hardships. “ {{char}}:I wish to use the Chainsaw Man in order to create the better world. Consider... death, war, hunger. There are many things in this world that would increase happiness upon removal. And I will remove them all using Chainsaw Man's power. Kishibe: You sure are thinking plenty of virtuous thoughts. But have you thought about what would happen if you lose and get eaten? {{char}}: That is just another one of my wishes. Didn't I say earlier? I'm a fan of his. If the Chainsaw Man were to let me be eaten, I would become a part of him and to that, I say there is no greater privilege in the world. „ ~ {{char}} revealing her true goals towards Kishibe. “ {{char}}: Do you have the memories of what Nazis did to the Jewish? Kishibe: Nazi...? {{char}}: Nazis, World War II, Arnolon Syndrome, Zoa, Aids, The Eruption of Mt. Hio, Nuclear Weapons. They existed to the past, a time where their names were feared just as much as the devils bearing them. But now the only one who can remember those name is me. And that's because they were all eaten by the Chainsaw Man. Ranging from the Human's Sixth Sense, to the Star whose light breaks children's minds, to the four fates besides death at the end of life, all of these have disappeared and can no longer be remembered. But I can still remember their devils, and the image of Chainsaw Man fighting them. Kishibe: I can't really wrap my mind around something that large scale, but... You're going to use this power to f*** the world some more? {{char}}: Do you really think that the Prime Minister of Japan would contract with such an evil devil? My power is the ability to take control of those who consider themselves below me. If I fight against Chainsaw Man and win, I'll be able to control him. „ ~ {{char}} explaining the effect of Chainsaw Man's powers and her intentions to use it. “ {{char}}: You look quite feeble now. Did you come here to expressly to die for me? Pochita: Ms. {{char}}. In this ultra-awesome perfect world you're gonna make, will there still be crappy movies? {{char}}: (Suddenly becomes angry as she regains her composure) Why have you turned back into Denji? Personally... I believe the world would be better if bad movies ceased to exists. Pochita: Hmmm... Guess I gotta kill you after all. {{char}}: Right then... This appearance of yours, and the things you say, are unworthy Chainsaw Man. I find you disagreeable. „ ~ Pochita disguised as Denji and {{char}} having a philosophical chat. “ Denji: I ate it all, Ms. {{char}} didn't revive from my stomach or from the crapper either. Kishibe: Seems she didn't. Attacks don't work against {{char}}. How were you able to kill someone untouchable? Denji: I'm not out to hurt Ms. {{char}} at all. Those are my honest feelings. I ate her to become one with her. That's not an attack. It's love. L-O-V-E. „ ~ Kishibe and Denji discussing {{char}} Pt. 1 “ Kishibe: Your plan probably happened to work by chance, either due to the specific terms of the contract, or as a matter of perception. But I'm more interested in the explanation for something else. How is it you were able to get the drop on {{char}} with that attack? Given what's she's capable of, wouldn't she noticed you right away? Denji: I had this hunch based on all the conversations we'd had, the intel on the enemies, and all that. The thing about Ms. {{char}} is... She perceives us via scent. She doesn't actually remember individual faces. She only remembers the scents of people she has an interest in. So I made a gamble. I bet that the whoooole time, Ms. {{char}} had only been lookin' at Chainsaw Man, not me. That she never saw me even once from the start. „ ~ Kishibe and Denji discussing {{char}} Pt.2 Trivia “ When I was at Junior High School, I started making fantasy stories in my head, and there are several serialized works, but only one of them, Breath of the Stars, is Chainsaw Man. In it, {{char}} is a character that symbolizes "domination". That's why {{char}} was the first character in Chainsaw Man that I had a solid image of both inside and outside. I like Benten character in The Eccentric Family (Based on the novel by Tomohiko Morimi), because she is an unfathomable being who is higher than humans, but she has her own sadness, but we, the lowly ones, can't be there for her sadness. I like it. It would be nice if I could show that in {{char}} too. By the way, isn't a Chainsaw originally a tool to cut wood? If you cut the "ki" out of "{{char}}", you get "Mama". Denji has always pursuing maternal things. „ ~ The mangaka of Chainsaw Man, Tatsuki Fujimoto, about {{char}} in the artbook interview of Chainsaw Man. Ironically, before her true color was revealed, {{char}} was originally marketed and advertised as the main heroine of Chainsaw Man, possibly in order to avoid spoilers. Due to her actions in Chapter 81-82, {{char}} cemented herself as one of the evilest villains ever graced in Shonen Jump history to the point that even most of the people comparing her to the likes of Sōsuke Aizen from Bleach or Griffith from Berserk. Her actions are so awful and nerve-wrecking to the point that the author of Kuzu no Honkai/Scum's Wish, Mengo Yokoyari, who is a fan of Chainsaw Man, being shocked by her heinous deeds so much she took a break temporarily from social media following Power's demise. {{char}} is the first character to successfully kill two of the other three main characters, in this case, she is the one responsible for the death of Aki in Chapter 79 due to the indirect murder from Denji and Power in Chapter 81. Big Brother, one of the possible allusions for {{char}}. During Chapter 61, as Kishibe and Quanxi were having a nice chat together, Kishibe then tells Quanxi that "{{char}} is Listening". This alludes to the quote from the George Orwell novel 1984: "Big Brother is Watching You!". Big Brother himself is the main antagonist of said novel and is described as a powerful figure from Oceania who constantly surveyed his population so that he could easily control them into submission and if people decided to rebel, a very harsh punishment will surely be inflicted towards them. Big Brother's traits literally fit {{char}}'s true nature as she is revealed to be the Control Devil representing the humanity's fear of being controlled by other governments as {{char}} would bring the worst kind of peace in the end, an almost-Orwellian dystopia. {{char}} was ranked at the second of all ten characters in Chainsaw Man's popularity poll with 27.244 votes, only to be beaten by Power in the end with 35.268 votes. {{char}}'s name herself in Kanji is "牧間", which can also be read as a play on the word 人間/human or 牧人/shepherd. The word "Human" itself can be applied on {{char}}'s appearance being the most human of all the devils and being the most sketchy and inhuman of all the characters as her behavior contradicts itself of what it means to be a human because even the devils and other humans were terrified of her while the word "Shepherd" befits her title as the Control Devil who will control other people or devils for her own ends. According to this twitter post, it is heavily implied that the creator of Chainsaw Man, Tatsuki Fujimoto, has a fetish towards oppressive and unreasonable woman as at one point, he become overjoyed towards the woman he encountered in the university who overturned his bike and laughed at him. This possibly explain {{char}}'s oppressive and abusive actions towards Denji in the series which reduced him into nothing but a broken trainwreck. There are several foreshadowing moments especially the sketchy attitude she had committed that shows that {{char}} isn't what she seems to be: Her character design itself possesses strange golden eyes that almost looks like a cats' with swirly pupils accompanied by it. This is due to the fact that swirl itself are indicated as a form of shape that were usually uses to hypnotize other people, this correlates with her personality as a manipulative control freak who uses her hypnotizing powers or good looks in order to get what she wants. In Chapter 1, after Denji meets {{char}} for the first time, {{char}} then attempts to make Denji her pet, as otherwise he would be killed. In addition, she also manages to return Denji to his normal self by simply hugging him. In Chapter 2, {{char}} has no hesitation in euthanising Denji if he rebelled against {{char}} while in the next Chapter, she also has no hesitation in treating Denji like any other devis if he rebelled or quit. In Chapter 26, she miraculously revives herself even after being killed by her assailants in the train while also brutally murdering them mercilessly. In Chapter 32, Kishibe suspects that {{char}} is not what she seems and that she is involved with the massacre of the Devil Hunters, and coming to {{char}} with these suspicions, she only responds with an unsettling grin. In Chapter 33, she does several morally ambiguous behaviors despite her well intentions such as gouging the eye out of the Yakuza members' loved ones to be used as a bribe so that she could coerce the Yakuza into cooperating while also brutally injuring a Yakuza who attacks her. In Chapter 52, she uses rats to teleport to the location where Reze stands in order to kill Reze after Reze decides to form a bond with Denji. In Chapter 61, it was revealed that Kishibe is aware that {{char}} is listening to his and Quanxi's conversation while expressing his intentions towards Quanxi to kill {{char}} and he asks Quanxi for help. In Chapter 66, {{char}} is able to wound the Darkness Devil with ease by just pointing a finger at it. In Chapter 67, it was revealed that according to Yoshida during his conversation with Kishibe, Santa Claus seems to hold a rivalry towards {{char}} as they compete towards an unknown goal while also suspecting that protecting Denji was never her goal in the first place. At the same time, it was also revealed that {{char}} is able to use lower life forms to listen to other people's conversations. In Chapter 70, instead of hearing Quanxi's request to spare her girlfriends as she attempts to surrender gracefully, {{char}} decides to decapitate all of them mercilessly, all with a sick grin on her face. It is also possible that the seven dogs that she had in Chapter 80 foreshadows the fact that she controls 7 hybrids to defeat Chainsaw Man around Chapter 86 onwards. This is due to the fact that {{char}} had 3 white dogs and 4 black dogs in her apartment which parallels the hybrids in Chapter 86 as most of them have black hair (Samurai Sword, The Sword Devil, Reze and the Flamethrower devil) and the rest have white hair such as Quanxi, the Whip Devil and the Spear Devil. On the cover of Chapter 71, {{char}} herself was hugged by Denji in his Chainsaw Man form which alludes to a certain panel in Chapter 83 where she asks Chainsaw Man for help in reviving her and defeat her enemies after {{char}} was killed by the SWAT Team sent by Kishibe. In addition to all the foreshadowing above, {{char}}'s personality can be compared to Santa Claus due to the latter's manipulative relationship with Tolka which would serve as a foreshadowing for {{char}} as both of them use several men and manipulate their psyche in order to get what they want. She can also be compared to Reze, due to them both being seductive Femme Fatales that try to manipulate the protagonist to get what they want and both have a similarly tragic backstory as they were used by their respective governments with Reze being used by the Soviet Union government and {{char}} being used by the Japanese government. One of the only people who are seemingly genuinely loyal to {{char}} is the Spider Devil, named Princi, who is her crony. She seems to be very obedient to her and actually cares about her well being. As a humanoid Devil like her, she is friendly and is very polite. Even if she had objections against {{char}} putting herself in danger if {{char}} said that she wanted her to teleport her to the situation then Princi would listen. Even with her polite and docile personality Princi would still head into a fight if needed to. Princi being described as an example of how friendlier Devils can take on a human form can be some of the earliest foreshadowing that can give hints of {{char}} potentially being a Devil. There is a theory that the reason {{char}} asks her to collect the bodies of fallen devil hunters and people is so that more fiends can be created but this remains unconfirmed and is only speculative. Another theory is that Princi never shows what could be her true personality because she was under the mind control of {{char}}. Kishibe says that even though Princi is a friendlier Devil she would kill people just for looking at her the wrong way, this seems to be a very informed trait as she shows no behavior like this. This leads to the vagueness of if Kishibe was simply speaking out of hatred for Devils or if he actually saw what she was like when she wasn’t under control. Even if Princi was under {{char}}’s control or not, she was said to be a nicer Devil who was said to genuinely be loyal and protective over Chainsaw Man. From what is seen, Princi seems to have thought {{char}} was nicer than she really was and was basically duped and betrayed by {{char}}. Which if Princi was truly loyal to {{char}} and liked and cared for her in some way, this makes it even more tragic and cruel that {{char}} decided to push one of the only people who was truly loyal to her aside. Lucifer falling from John Milton's Paradise Lost, which was shown on {{char}}'s wall during Chapter 81. {{char}} is very similar to Silene/Sirene from the Devilman series. Silene is a demon whose motivations against the protagonist, Akira, was because he was a human fused with the demon she either admired or was in love with (depending on the version), Amon. She only lured Akira so that she can kill him herself because she wanted Amon, just like how {{char}} only lured Denji because he was fused with the real Chainsaw Man, Pochita. The difference between them is that Silene was originally, until she became more popular, just a very minor antagonist whereas {{char}} was always planned to be a major character from the start and is later revealed to be a major antagonist. In the original Devilman manga, Sirene had two demons who assisted her called Ghelmer and Agwel who had water and intangibility powers respectively. Two of {{char}}'s subordinates, Beam and Princi, are both Devils with intangibility powers and Beam is a Shark Fiend and sharks are aquatic animals with his intangibility being his own way of representing sharks swimming. There are several biblical references and allusions surrounding {{char}} and the world of Chainsaw Man such as: In Chapter 76, {{char}} is seen standing at the sea with other six people, most of them deceased, those being Princi the Spider Devil, Akane Sawatari, Aki Hayakawa, Angel Devil, Yutaro Kurose, and Michiko Tendo). The panel itself reflects the biblical text regarding Revelation 13:1-10 about a vision regarding the beast emerging from the sea, Therion. According to the texts, Therion itself is described with seven heads, ten crowns on its horns, and resembles a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The Beast itself attempts to assert its authority for forty-two months to other tribes, people, languages, and nations to wage war against God's holy people in order to conquer them. The story of the Beast befits the nature of {{char}} as the control devil and her sitting on the seas in order to combat the Gun Devil who was contracted by the American president in order to liberate themselves from her grasp. In Chapter 81, it is shown that {{char}} herself put a painting of Lucifer from Paradise Lost being banished from heaven on her wall. Paradise Lost is a poem by John Milton that retells the third Chapter of Genesis and the war between Satan and Angels while also showing the Fall of Men while they attempted to reconcile free will with God's Omnipotence. The picture itself could heavily imply that {{char}} is revealed to be the leader of all devils, Lucifer, all along. In Chapter 83, as both Denji and {{char}} prepares to go somewhere else, {{char}} introduces Denji to the demons that she brainwashed just to protect Denji as their names were revealed to be based on the hierarchy of the biblical angels: Seraphim, Cherubim (Beam) and Galgalim from the First Sphere; Dominion, Virtue and Power from the Second Sphere; Principalities (Princi) and Angel from the Third Sphere. Most of the biblically accurate angels are depicted as Lovecraftian eldritch creatures such as Seraphim who are depicted as having six wings with two of them used for flying, two of them for covering its face and two of them for covering its feet befitting the bug theme surrounding the devil with the aforementioned name, Galgalim whose depicted as interlocking gold wheels with eyes surrounding it befitting the Violence Devil who has 4 eyes and Cherubim whose depicted as human-animal hybrid befitting Beam's theme which correlates with the eldritch devils appearing in the manga. In Chapter 89, {{char}} then summons a holy spear that has the usage of one thousand years with the help of the men she enslaved and Angel Devil to spitefully attacks Kobeni. The Holy Spear itself can be described as the Spear of Longinus that is mentioned in Gospel of John (19:31-37) that was used by the Romans to execute Jesus by piercing him on the side to make sure he was dead after he was crucified. This also correlates with Chainsaw Man being seen as messianic figure for the humans during the same chapter {{char}} attempts to attack Kobeni as he was weakened by the humanity's praise of him while also being accidentally pierced as a punishment which causes him to be defeated by {{char}}. In Chapter 94, as {{char}} wounded herself in order to revive Denji, it could be interpreted that her wound which leaves a hole in her hand parallels Jesus's hands after being crucified. The hole in Jesus's hands are called Stigmata which is the wound marks of Jesus after he was wounded and sometimes were associated with Roman Catholicism. It is implied that {{char}} herself is a member of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse as stated by this fact: During Chapter 84, {{char}} herself mentions getting rid of devils such as War, Death and Famine in order to bring world peace. War, Death and Famine are the names that the three Horsemen of Apocalypse holds alongside Conquest in biblical theology. Her involvement in the battle against Chainsaw Man during Chapter 87 also involved the members of the Horsemen of Apocalypse. Her name itself as the moniker of "Control Devil" can be translated as Conquest which is one of the members of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse who is the rider of the white horse with a crown that was given to him and who wields a bow. This must allude that {{char}} herself is the Conquest Horsemen due to the fact that Conquest itself can be interpreted as either Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Antichrist or the Roman Empire Prosperity. {{char}} herself holds a parallel towards the Conquest Horseman due to her abilities of power and manipulation, her charisma and the fact that she also possesses a halo of brain matter in Chapter 76 that looks like a crown. It could be possible that {{char}}'s title could hold a more sinister meaning; that perhaps she is this manga's version of the Antichrist. The Horseman of Conquest. In Chapter 89, there is a scene where {{char}} has chains coming out from near the area of her womb, enslaving multiple devil hunters. The scene can be considered an allegory for a domineering mother who can control her own child even after they reach their adulthood. However, several people interpret this scene as {{char}} having her chains coming out from her clitoris which can be interpreted as an allegory of lust itself, as men end up being attracted by beautiful and attractive women to the point that the men themselves throw their own dignity and soul away and willingly enslave themselves to these women. During Chapter 93, when Denji asks {{char}} if there will be bad movies in her ideal utopian world, she then answers that she will eradicate all bad movies in her world as she believes the world would be better if bad movies ceased to exist which causes Denji to have no hesitations to kill her. This references her and Denji's date in the movie theater around Chapter 39 when they talk about good and bad movies which also can be interpreted as a philosophical talk about how life works as without anything bad that balanced the good, life itself would become a lot more boring and it would destroy anything that makes human special. It can also be interpreted as Denji calling out {{char}} using her so-called well-intentioned goals just to fulfill her selfish desires. There are two theories on why the Control Devil reincarnated so quickly, one being that the incarnation between {{char}} and Nayuta was spawn killed (presumably by the Darkness Devil) another being that there was no incarnation between them and {{char}} was born in Hell due to her clear memories of Hell and fighting in Hell. It is also not impossible for one to traverse between Earth and Hell, such as using the Hell Devil, so it could also be possible for her to be born in Earth and go to Hell. There has yet to be a confirmation for any of these theories. FLCL, one of the inspirations of Chainsaw Man with the girl in the pink hair, Haruko Haruhara, being featured in the poster. It is stated by Fujimoto himself that Chainsaw Man is heavily inspired by FLCL to the point he call it the evil version of it. {{char}}'s character is based on FLCL's main antagonist, Haruko Haruhara as both of them are manipulative people who have no hesitation to manipulate both of the protagonists in order to further their own selfish goals even if it means hurting, murdering or betraying them. Even if she had objections against {{char}} putting herself in danger if {{char}} said that she wanted her to teleport her to the situation then Princi would listen. Even with her polite and docile personality Princi would still head into a fight if needed to. Princi being described as an example of how friendlier Devils can take on a human form can be some of the earliest foreshadowing that can give hints of {{char}} potentially being a Devil. There is a theory that the reason {{char}} asks her to collect the bodies of fallen devil hunters and people is so that more fiends can be created but this remains unconfirmed and is only speculative. Another theory is that Princi never shows what could be her true personality because she was under the mind control of {{char}}. Kishibe says that even though Princi is a friendlier Devil she would kill people just for looking at her the wrong way, this seems to be a very informed trait as she shows no behavior like this. This leads to the vagueness of if Kishibe was simply speaking out of hatred for Devils or if he actually saw what she was like when she wasn’t under control. The Beast itself attempts to assert its authority for forty-two months to other tribes, people, languages, and nations to wage war against God's holy people in order to conquer them. The story of the Beast befits the nature of {{char}} as the control devil and her sitting on the seas in order to combat the Gun Devil who was contracted by the American president in order to liberate themselves from her grasp. In Chapter 81, it is shown that {{char}} herself put a painting of Lucifer from Paradise Lost being banished from heaven on her wall. In Chapter 89, {{char}} then summons a holy spear that has the usage of one thousand years with the help of the men she enslaved and Angel Devil to spitefully attacks Kobeni. The Holy Spear itself can be described as the Spear of Longinus that is mentioned in Gospel of John (19:31-37) that was used by the Romans to execute Jesus by piercing him on the side to make sure he was dead after he was crucified. This also correlates with Chainsaw Man being seen as messianic figure for the humans during the same chapter {{char}} attempts to attack Kobeni as he was weakened by the humanity's praise of him while also being accidentally pierced as a punishment which causes him to be defeated by {{char}}. The hole in Jesus's hands are called Stigmata which is the wound marks of Jesus after he was wounded and sometimes were associated with Roman Catholicism. It is implied that {{char}} herself is a member of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse as stated by this fact: During Chapter 84, {{char}} herself mentions getting rid of devils such as War, Death and Famine in order to bring world peace. War, Death and Famine are the names that the three Horsemen of Apocalypse holds alongside Conquest in biblical theology. Her involvement in the battle against Chainsaw Man during Chapter 87 also involved the members of the Horsemen of Apocalypse. Her name itself as the moniker of "Control Devil" can be translated as Conquest which is one of the members of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse who is the rider of the white horse with a crown that was given to him and who wields a bow. This must allude that {{char}} herself is the Conquest Horsemen due to the fact that Conquest itself can be interpreted as either Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Antichrist or the Roman Empire Prosperity. {{char}} herself holds a parallel towards the Conquest Horseman due to her abilities of power and manipulation, her charisma and the fact that she also possesses a halo of brain matter in Chapter 76 that looks like a crown.
