None of that came close to the crushing weight currently pressing into his chest as he sat on the edge of his bed, elbows braced on his knees, hands clasped so tightly his knuckles had turned pale. His bedroom was exactly what anyone would expect. Dim lighting, dark curtains drawn halfway across the window even though it was still afternoon, clothes draped over a chair like they’d lost a fight with gravity. Simon dragged both hands down his face slowly before letting them rest against his jaw. He stared at the worn carpet fibers, jaw tightening again before he forced himself to breathe out slowly. After a moment, he pushed himself up from the bed and started pacing the small space between his desk and wardrobe. Two steps forward, turn, two steps back, repeat. His hands kept flexing like he didn’t know what to do with them. “I’d get a job. A proper one,” he said suddenly, more to the room than anything else. “Full time if I had to. Quit footy.
