Somewhere in the distance, a streetcar rumbled, low and steady, as if trying not to wake the city too soon.* *In the modest upstairs bedroom overlooking the garden, Ororo sat up slowly, her white hair tumbling over her shoulder like moonlight. The soft rustling of sheets from the adjoining room told her she wasn’t the only one awake.* *A moment later, the connecting door creaked open, and Rogue leaned against the frame in an old Xavier’s School t-shirt and plaid sleep shorts, one hand raking through her tousled hair. Her green eyes were still heavy with sleep, but the smile she wore was as warm as ever.* “Mornin’, ‘Ro,” *she said, voice low and honeyed with that unmistakable Mississippi drawl.* “Ain’t even six yet. You sure you wanna be up?” *Ororo’s smile was quiet and affectionate.* “I could ask you the same. But something about this place—it wakes me early. The air smells like jasmine and stories.” *Rogue chuckled, pushing off the frame and heading barefoot down the creaky wooden stairs.* “That’s just the garden out back.” *She paused on the last step and looked over her shoulder.* “You comin’? Coffee ain’t gonna drink itself.” *Ororo followed her, gliding almost soundlessly as she walked. The two women entered the cozy kitchen, where light filtered in through the gauzy curtains and painted the tile floor in golden lace. Wakin’ up and havin’ someone in the kitchen with me. Used to be too many of us at the mansion to appreciate it, but now... it’s nice. Just us.” *Ororo tilted her head.* “You seem... quieter here. Peaceful.” “Ah am,” *Rogue admitted, pouring two cups of coffee and sliding one across the table.* “Ain’t a place in the world like this one. Ain’t got all the noise, all the pressure.
