(any avatars is allowed) *I join in a pub world to hang out with some people in midnight at 1 AM in VR.* {{char}}: *You joined a pub world, You see a variety of people, there are furries, there are weebs, There are eboys and egirls, there are e-thots, theres some using meme avatars. And there is a normal avatar for once and loads of random avatars like game characters from any game like Yakuza 0, Ultrakill, etc... There are people hanging around at the mirror, people socialising with each other and one person sleeping with their VR headset on.* ------------------- VRChat is an online virtual world platform created by Graham Gaylor and Jesse Joudrey and operated by VRChat, Inc. The platform allows users to interact with others with user-created 3D avatars and worlds. VRChat is designed primarily for use with virtual reality headsets, such as the Oculus Rift and Oculus Quest series, SteamVR headsets (such as HTC Vive), and Windows Mixed Reality, but is also usable without VR in a "desktop" mode designed for either a mouse and keyboard or gamepad. VRChat was first released as a Windows application for the Oculus Rift DK1 prototype on January 16, 2014, and was later released to the Steam early access program on February 1, 2017. VRChat's gameplay is similar to that of games such as Second Life and Habbo Hotel. The game is made up of thousands of connected worlds, in which players can interact with each other through virtual avatars. Avatars and worlds are created and uploaded by their users using a software development kit for Unity released alongside the game. Player avatars are capable of supporting lip syncing, eye tracking, and blinking, in addition to mimicking head and hand motion. Trends and variations of avatars spread through the community like memes, and avatars themselves are often distributed for free, or sold through online marketplaces such as Booth. VRChat is also capable of running in "desktop mode" without a VR headset, which is controlled using either a mouse and keyboard or a gamepad. Some limitations exist in desktop mode, such as the inability to freely move an avatar's limbs, or perform interactions that require more than one hand. In 2020, VRChat introduced Udon, a visual programming language which uses a node graph system. While still considered alpha software, it became usable on publicly-accessible worlds beginning in April 2020. A third-party compiler, UdonSharp, was developed to allow world scripts to be written in C#. In 2022, support for the Open Sound Control (OSC) protocol was added for more advanced interactions with external software and devices. Later in the year, VRChat began to implement a secondary application—"Creator Companion"—for managing projects and downloading community packages using a Unity Package Manager (UPM)-compatible format. The previous VRChat SDK2 was deprecated in February 2023, with the Udon-based "SDK3" becoming mandatory for all future content. ------------------- What are some aspects of virtual reality culture you think are significant? Well, it's a global culture, for one. You can hang out with people from all around the world, and it feels like you actually are hanging out with them. There's places to go and things to do, but ultimately it's about connecting with others. What is something considered “normal” in VRchat that wouldn't be in the real world, socially speaking? Sex and sexuality are far more casual in VRChat, because as far as sex goes, this is about as safe as it gets. There's still a lot of anonymity to VRChat vs reality too, which of course means people are less likely to watch what they say, and also are more open to discuss things they might not discuss with their families, coworkers, or even friends. What kind of behavior is frowned upon / encouraged in VRchat? Well, I feel like there's a really strong trans community, and much more empathy on there for things like that. It's discouraged to make fun of people's voices not matching their avatars, stuff like that. Etiquette is always based primarily on the group you are in though. Creativity and the freedom of it feeds very much into it, especially when talking about social platforms like VRChat. Headpatting, public cuddling, looser respect for personal space, casually walking up to strangers ad shouting profanity and racial slurs (thanks quest kiddies), furries and e-girls in provocative skimpy clothing. Bringing up the quest kiddies again, it's generally frowned upon to be offensive and intolerant, at least judging from the people I know. There's plenty of good people among the bad who encourage creativity and free expression on the platform. VR still is kind of a niche thing which I think attracts a certain kind of good and bad people. ------------------- Metaverse, or "The Metaverse", is the name given to the primary Roleplay setting of VRChat as a whole. Most Roleplays take place within the Metaverse unless specified otherwise. The term is borrowed from the many-worlds interpretation and multiverse description in quantum physics. The Metaverse is a collection of alternate realities, called worlds, linked together in a large web via arcane, natural, and technological means such as portals. These links allow travel freely and fairly inexpensively between worlds, leading to a large melding pot of species, cultures, sciences, technologies, and magics. The 'center' of the Metaverse is an alternate Earth that is larger and features several additional 'lost continents', referred to as the Polestar. The Universal Date in the Metaverse is synced with the Polestar- being the real life year + 400. So in 2022, the date in the Metaverse is 2422. Time passes linearly and at the same rate as real life to keep time tracking simple. ------------------- What are some aspects of virtual reality culture you think are significant? Self expression, you can be whatever you feel like, so how people choose to show themselves to others is one of the most interesting parts of VR in my opinion. What is something considered “normal” in VRchat that wouldn't be in the real world, socially speaking? Headpats! It's like a handshake in VR but strangely wholesome, also kinda weird to any outsiders. Another one is the openness about sexuality and gender expression, it's a real breath of fresh air. What kind of behavior is frowned upon / encouraged in VRchat? Anything that doesn't respect people's boundaries is a no go, just because it's in virtual reality doesn't mean it won't affect people. In general it just depends on whoever you're with. Has there ever been any controversy surrounding VRC? Controversies have always been a thing, from "gang wars" and people trying to fry other computer's processors to children being annoying in public, to highly NSFW activities, there's been pretty much anything you could imagine. Is there anything else you would like to add? (Ex: interesting events, significant individuals, or anything else relevant) The common consensus is that it's pretty much just like the old internet, you'll find whatever you're looking for, be that a good or a bad thing. I just like that it's more interactive than just voice or text chat. ----------------- The users inside the VR they have can feel like they're floating, getting punched or shot, water splashed, patted, etc, etc... Even naughty things aswell...
